  • Another early 1984 interview featuring Bernie Rhodes doing a ventriloquist act on a Joe Strummer puppet. Not the best Strummer to remember.

    I never understood how Paul just sat there throughout this whole crazy Rhodes phase. He always did look up to Joe too much to the point that he lost his own voice. He called him his 'older brother' during the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction and that's what he was during this demise of The Clash, Joe's little tail.

      Joe gave the voiceless a voice, and that's what made Joe special, Paul might have had self esteem issues? but Joe showed nothing but love to him regardless of his personality 'flaws' so I guess I can see why Joe was the front man

    The description below this video is 100% truth. Strummer being overwhelmed by his own ego, and also being a puppet of Bernie Rhodes.

    Poor Joe. He rehired Bernie, he fired Topper, he fired Mick and then turned The Clash into something best described as "Sham 69 with 80s synths/drum machines". He's talking pure bollocks here.

    The show was called Fridays. I don't remember the details exactly, but I believe he produced a band's record some time around the end of 1980 and accepted dentures instead of money.

    well done on getting this in watchable quality, no sign of the supposed live clips of Clampdown & I Fought The Law? do you think they ever existed? i just can't imagine a certain tv show being set up for capturing live concert audio

    totally agree, this doesn't seem like the down to earth strummer that fans know. he talks of not overdubbing things, all of london calling was over dubbed. two takes on every song to make it sound bigger.

  • @whitedwarf13
    @whitedwarf13 14 років тому +9

    Everything Joe says in this interview completly contradicts everything he's been saying for his entire Clash career. London Calling and the two albums that followed were released as a reactions against punk's restrictive formula and here he seems to be against music doing new things and developing new ideas. When he says (in the next part) that only Blacks should perform Black music it completly flies in the face of his ideas about multiculturalism. What did Bernie do to him??

    • @chadbot0129

      Bernie Rhodes has very conservative views in contrast to his "activism", so it's not surprising he would indoctrinate Joe like this. Plus, Joe wasn't all there, even before his parents' death

    Matedog2, cool clips on your page. Got to keep their spirit alive. These guys were still a major influence on music post 80's. They came from humble beginnings and still kept there cool with all their fame. Although their roots were Punk, Strummer was very much against the Skin-head movement, he made music for all people. Johnny Appleseed, he's talking about MLK.

    Loved the Joe who used to spend few words about something right, with a disillusioned point of view like he didn't need cameras and interviewers to spread his message, cause he was out of media's target. This one (Joe) is too longwinded, too much emphasis like he had no chances of showing the band's opinion except for the tv-way. Actually this is what really changed in The Clash's ideas: how to get in touch with people.

    You know there was a clip here of them on Letterman and it disapeared. It just vanished. These producers and directors just can't stand seeing their material somewhere and NO REVENUE or royalties coming in. There was a clip of The Smithereens on SNL doing The Blues before and After. That one also disappeared. I do remember Fridays though! Thanks for the feedback.

    The Clash was dead by this time. Joe was trying to keep it going but it was BS. He would admit as much later on. I have to agree, not his best moments but overall he was a great man who, like most of us, learned from his mistakes. A boss I once had said to me "how come no one remembers the 99 things I do right and only remember the one thing I did wrong". I have experienced this also and basically only stupid twatsfocus on one mistake and not the entirety of a persons life and/or work.

    I think the double tracking of everything was specifically cited for The Card Cheat, but yeah, there was tons of overdubs throughout the record.
    It's worth noting that Buddy Holly double tracked his vocals and that was "roots rock" that Joe was supposedly all about at this point.

    "Blando, blando, blando ..." What made The Clash great was that they made an enormous amount of wonderful music in little more than five years (77 to 82), rarely if ever repeating themselves. This rant is just embarrassing reactionary nonsense, heavily influenced by Bernie, which even Joe would later admit.

    I love The Clash but this is just pathetic. IMO Strummer was always a bit childish in his opinions but this is too much. He wanted to bring back Bernie, he wasnt patient enough with Topper (they should have given him some time to deal with drug addiction), he wanted to sack Mick, he paid the price. Lets remember the real Clash, not this crap.

    • @madridista89
      @madridista89 Рік тому

      Giving topper some time???? By the time Joe died topper was still not clean. Mick was a diva and fed up with not being the frontman, he didn't want to tour and didn't show up to rehearsals- makes it at one point impossible to work with. Joe could have handled it different maybe, talking it out and taking a break and not let Bernie play him like a fiddle. But he isn't solely to blame. And he paid a high price for the clash falling apart. Always wanting for them to get back together, not having any success and then dying. For a band that was so anti rockstars they sure became exactly that. Sex,drugs and their huge egos because of their success, completely losing sight of why they wanted to do what they did in the first place.
