    At 15:01 - "I am the heir of a
generation of black people who would put on their Sunday best and go places where they knew they'd be bloodied and battered and yet they went anywhere anyway." Powerful and true.

Reading his book: is just so difficult because it is so well written that you feel transported, in a way that you can feel yourself walking along with him, and hearing the people as they speak to him....I am still getting through it, and I love to read, and I think I am brave, but it is difficult.

Coloured brothers and Sisters of America, you're screwed, and this fool ain't gonna do a damn thing for ya! What, we can sit anywhere on the bus, and we've all got iPods, and we can play ball. King, X, Farrakhan, this fool, you're all deluding yourselves! Let's see as the military and police start murdering you all over the next few weeks!
From the film New jack City
_"What can you offer them? Another "I have a dream" speech?_
_Some of that same shit you ripping off to me?_
_Look where we at. Not a pot to piss in, nor a window to throw it out of._
      _You's the fool, old man."_
What kinda goon writes a 40 summary *for Trump?* Is that the best you can do … really? You, my brothers and sister are Royally screwed if that what you think that's the answer !!!!!!!!! 40 page report- facepalm. Your man is dead .. he's dead!! You really think white, racist police are going to change with a 40 page report.

@@utubecomment21 The report wasn't done for Trump. Listen to this, in a different frame of mind. It was the beginning of a beginning, that was written at the behest of President Obama, and I'm sure all of those who contributed to this, did so because it was right to do so. It deserves to be resumed as soon as possible after November. You've got to have a starting point in life, and this goes for everything. You do seem both scathing and angry . I do so wish you weren't.

Years ago, I spoke with a female police officer about a conflict I had with someone (it turned out fine), and she gave me excellent advice on how to deal with the conflict. She listened to what I said and understood my psychology PERFECTLY. I was really impressed. She was self-confident and pragmatic.
I think a lot of police lack her intelligence and confidence. I believe the four officers who stood by while George Floyd was murdered lacked the confidence to stop it. One of the HARDEST things in the world is to go against what everyone else is doing and do the right thing because that takes confidence.
Another good example of confidence is Captain Brett Crozier. He had to defy his superiors to save the lives of his crew - and he was fired for it. Police have to be willing to take the same risk when they see something obviously wrong. They have to be willing to lose friendships and even their job.
I don’t know how this confidence can be instilled in officers, but I bet some European police forces have effective training for this.

The pilice department is a reflection of society. As a former law enforcement officer, almost everyone going in the academy starta out with wanting to help and do good in the communities they have been taken an oath to serve. There are complex things that take place in a police officers mind when doing the difficult police work when out in public. Everything learned at home from your upbringing and all of the academics learned in tge criminal justice classes can be convoluted into what we witness from SOME police today. Some of this is peer pressure...wanting to fit in and be accepted by your fellow brothers and sisters in blue. Some of what yoy see is stemmed from the history of policing meshed with the individual officer needing psychological help with learning how to deal with his/ her own personal problems.

We must find a way to change the narrative. Truth and Reconciliation are the only way forward for this Nation. How do we do this in a society that so readily doubles down on it's racism. Any place or forum you go to, whether it's the family dinner table, a conversation between friends or strangers on the street, to platforms like Facebook and Twitter, we find weaponized denial of the truth. I have hope but look to find a way to change these conversations for a more positive, inclusive, equal future for all.

Dear Ms Amanpour, Mr Issacson and Mr Stevenson, Thank you Ms Amanpour pour your very interesting videocasts that touch upon every subject that comes across our desks of reality so to speak. The terrible videos of people losing their life while in police custody is shocking and terrible and wrong. But. There is always a… but. We must wait until both sides of the incident are reported before making judgements that could send innocent people to prison or guilty people free. What is needed right now is for people or all colors to acknowledge that people in free countries can say what they want, but that’s as far as it goes. The message is not getting out there that to harm someone is wrong from any angle you look at it. The people perpetrating crimes of willful harm against others must be held to account, but what is missing is a spokesperson for getting this message across both in your country and the world. We hear time and time again of people willfully hurting or maiming or killing other people simply because of the color of their skin or sexual orientation or political beliefs etc. In the world today there are heads of state as well as twisted individuals who have beliefs that allow them to justify doing atrocious acts, bodily harm or worse to others. Again; what is needed is a new kind of Pope that is not attached to religion but a person who is married to reason and equality and interested in having all people getting treated fairly. Someone must be chosen to get up there on the national stage in your country and all countries and speak to the world’s citizenry that we have no more room for people getting abused, physically harmed, enslaved or killed for the absurd reasons those extremists have used to justify their sordid means throughout the centuries. Let’s find that spokesperson for your county and the world who can be a spokesman for humanity not attached to any belief system other than for the well-being human community. Let’s get someone who people can relate to that speaks reason and fairness as the new way ahead for the human family. We need a person who speaks as a human being to other human beings about the fact that there is no more room for harming anyone of any race, color or creed. It's an opinion. Peace

Stevenson's work is such an appreciated potent legacy. Buoys the spirit to see diversity and breadth of peaceful resistance now. Wonder if every community in country could have scheduled truth and reconciliation weeks where systematic space for listening happens with trained facilitators/mediators until each and every community offers whatever each can to repair great injustices.

Repentance is definitely the first step. Police officers apologising on behalf of their predecessors and I think government officials would be the best start.

I love what Bryan Stevenson says about repentance - the police showing up at the lynching memorial signs for public apologies for the terroristic acts/lynchings, that the police of those days failed to keep there citizens safe - RIGHT ON!!! great idea!

Bryan - That 'fiction' came from the Papal Bulls and the Doctrine of Discovery. Read Steven Newcomb's book Pagans in the Promised Land. Until colonization is understood there will not be any racial justice.

@Peggy Wiley do you understand what colonization is? Have you researched it? Or are you just commenting because you see the word Pagan and have an assumption about it?

I watched the bus burn in Al. That was the day the narrative changed for me. I have been in an interracial marriage for 43 yrs. that is proximity. My hope is found in Jesus Christ and His Church. I have been out of my comfort zone in my professional and personal life. Part of our time was spent living in a town in IL in the 90’s until 2013 that was like Al in the 60’s. My husband was the first Black man to do many things professionally and personally in that city.I know we helped change the narrative in the city and churches. Our thirty yr old dau has an interest in going to law school. She will be visiting from Pheonix this month and we will be going to museum. Bryan I would add one more solution to being a change agent. 5) prepare and equip yourself in the area that God calls you. This is implicit in your presentations but your not staying out of the law library and learning all you could about various aspects of law was part of your preparation. We returned to Anniston Al after being gone for 37 yrs. we attend the most integrated church we have ever seen in any of the various States we have lived in. I hope one day you will come to speak in our city of Anniston Al. I hope one day my children get to meet you and I pray they are beginning to understand their racial injustice scares are medals and they are better equipped to go forward on their individualized journey. Thank you for all you do.

Hi Dianne, wonderful to hear this.
It's good to hear that you have a lived experience of what Bryan Stevenson passionately communicates at every chance he gets to talk.
Here's a rare and honest commentary on how we can continue the dialogue going forward that I found very crucial to have.
Hope you can read that and share with others you come across. humanparts.medium.com/there-is-no-such-thing-as-a-white-ally-469bb82799f2
