This song has some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. Every young person should hear this song and learn the message the lyrics are telling us.
Very true, and especially poignant considering the song was originally written in French in 1964 by Charles Aznavour and Georges Garvarentz.
Agreed. But the conundrum of youth is that "you don't know what you don't know until you know it." Know what I mean?
@@frankjones4357 exactly.. you really do not understand the message of the song... until you have lived the lyrics... only then do they have real meaning... Another song with the same message... 'Those were the days my friend' by Mary Hopkin I think...
One of my favorites, Roy Clark was a much better guitarist than singer but to me this one was awesome!!
@@markstrickland5684 I listened to the Glen Campbell version and I liked Roy Clark better. Both are very good in my opinion.
I love Roy Clark, and every thing he sang, not only was he a country music legend, but a virtuoso guitarist who could play everything…the cohost of Hee Haw
Roy Clark not only played any stringed instrument he played them well. A true musician. He also had a great voice and a great sense of humor.
Roy Clark was a master musician who played banjo, guitar and fiddle at the studio musician level at least.
I'm in my 60's now. Back in my youth I lived like there was no tomorrow, rode with 1%'rs, raced cars, and hurt people I loved, (emotionally). You can never get it back, just treat everyone in your life well and have no regrets
This has to be one of the most recorded songs of all time. One of the best written songs of all time. I like Roy Clark’s version the best. He had so much emotion and one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Music has lost a giant
This song is emotional for everyone.
I was 7 when I saw him at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City. My mom wanted to see him, I didn't. So glad my parents dragged me to see him. He played the banjo so hard and fast, he broke strings on the banjo. Memories I'll never forget.
For an amusement park Worlds Of Fun did their due diligence in getting quality acts to stop by. I saw Jim Stafford play there in about 1976?, he was amazing. Wish I'd seen Roy Clark as well.
I believe Roy sang this at Baseball Legend Mickey Mantle’s funeral at his request back in 95 , great moving song, thanks Angela!
OKLAHOMA boys.
Yes, and I liked the version 30+ years later for The Mick better because he was older. He and Mickey had a pact that they would sing at each other's funeral. We don't know how well Mickey could sing but we know that Roy was good enough at baseball to have a chance to walk on at spring training. He got east of the Mississippi and looked at his finances and decided he had enough money to get to Nashville but not Florida.
I actually prefer the Willie Nelson cover because he was older when he did it.
@@Maya-bu2rf great story thanks didn’t know all that!
That's interesting to know.
Coincidentally, I live just down the road from where Mickey was from and born. Amazing to think a legend such as he came from such a tiny town by me, tucked back into the woods. Not much there besides a post office and a couple of residents. The main road that goes through there is named after him.
True story:
Someone asked Jimi Hendrix what it feels like to be the best guitar player in the world. He replied, "I don't know, ask Roy Clark."
🤡🤡
He said that about everybody - he even said it about you on Cavet.
@@kenlieberman4215 good thing for you that it isn't a requirement to know what you are talking about in order to post ur thoughts.
@@kenlieberman4215 ,, Well, we know he meant it when Jimi heard SRV.
@@kenlieberman4215 It was the truth about Roy Clark.
The days are long but the years are short......live life while you're young....live it till the end.
That song is so true. I lived very much that way. Now 60 and alone, lost love passed away 3-26-23 only 2 months away from marriage. Only 4 yrs together now living alone in a place with no friends. Alone.
Another good song choice. Not to mention that you are absolutely adorable empress!
This song still brings a tear to my eye when I hear it. I could tell that it was getting you a little misty too, you have a kind and beautiful soul empress.
What a great song I don't think Roy wrote it but he sang it like he lived it. Thank you for reacting.
Roy was one of the greatest guitarist that ever lived. There are lots of videos of him playing. But to hear him sing I would strongly suggest "I never picked Cotton" and "Thank God and Grayhound"
Poetry put to music. The old adage - they don’t make songs like that anymore - is so true.
I was 10 years old when he did this. Of course I remember liking it because HeeHaw was a big thing. Now that I’m 65 My eyes well up in tears when I hear it God Bless RC
Roy was the best. He could sing serious. He could sing fun. He could play any thing with strings at a top level.
I listened to this yesterday when I, too, was young. If I'd listened and internalized it, I could have avoided a lifetime of needless mistakes.
This song is so amazing. And boy, what a message.
A timeless Classic. The words are profound, especially when I can relate to them!
You're too young to relate. I envy you! Clark is a country music icon. He could
shred on the guitar.
Message to the young, you either heed or bleed. Knowledge passed on learn or burn.
My granddad always said if you don't listen, you'll have to feel.
Wow, Angela, it just goes to show how the past years can get jumbled around. I thought Roy did this in the mid-1960's. Interesting how, in the era when FM radio and "the serious consideration of rock music" -- the music of the baby boom generation - could still be eclipsed by a featured performer from a funny country-western variety TV show. By the time of Roy's passing in late 2018 he'd become regarded as one of the best all-around guitarists in America, as well as being a genuinely nice gentleman. He didn't need hit records to draw crowds wherever he appeared.
Thanks, Angela, for reviewing this one.
Roy was so immensely talented; it is almost beyond belief. Of all his songs, though, this one has the most emotional impact.
best string interment player ever
Roy clark was AMAZING at putting emotion into his songs. He had a clear passion for music and storytelling through song. I love it. If you're open to looking into more of his music, I suggest I Never Picked Cotton.
That was the best song he ever wrote and his life it is such a beautiful song now you realize it when you get old God bless your may you rest in peace 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I can almost smell my dad and feel his presence when I hear this song
I can always remember Roy and always remember Roy doing ghostwriters he got in some kind of mood Oh It was it was good❤❤
Keith whitley Keith sweatley's Hey gotta phone called miss me miss me when I'm gone that's what it's about right there
Great Great tune and artist.
Great reaction. One of my favorite songs since my youth. It was also one if the first records I bought. Thanks for the memory.
One of the best songs ever written. Bar none.
If it had a string, Roy could make beautiful music with it.
Wow! I had forgotten all about this song. I remember really liking it 40 years ago and feel like I haven't heard it since. Still like it.
This is a great choice Angela. Makes me feel like he's describing my life. I'm 75 years old.
This is a great classic. I remember watching Roy sing this on "HEE HAW" as a young kid. Not every vocalist can be Pavarotti or Dion, or Houston-esque. They say a story and get their point across with great sensitivity and power in their own unique way.
Hi watched him perform this song for the first time as well was when I was a child and my parents and our whole family watched he haw every Saturday night. I think it came on at 7 o’clock, but we all loved the show. It was kind of corny but funny lighthearted entertainment.
I'm from Roy's Home Town of Meherrin, Virginia. Roy would regularly return home, and was a super humble guy. His nephew married a woman from my church, and Roy would frequently attend Christmas plays at our church. He was a class act, and a great musician. Great review.
Childhood memories for me! Thank you!
This is such a beautiful song....I loved Roy Clark's sing & he was a master musican, as he could play many different instuments & was a very good singer as well!
❤this song i been there done that when i was young😅
Time goes so fast - treasure it
Slow down and smell the roses, before the roses are gone.
The song is intended for the young because the critical message is directed at them. If you really want to do a certain thing in your life, then get to it because, as time goes by, it quietly picks up speed and before you realize it, you're too old to live that dream.
My dad sounded just like him and he used to sing to me all the time my favorite was smile though your heart is breaking I listen to Roy Clark and all of a sudden my dad is singing to me again
Just sifting thru ur reactions having found u recently wow ur such a lovely person seeing ur emotional reactions! The world needs more beautiful souls like yours. Keep up the great work.
the 60s had a dark side. this is one facet of that darkness. (aint nobody dancing to this one.)
Roy doesn't get 1 tenth of the praise he should get. A real musician.
When young we all do things we regret later so to balance the scales seek, experience, and remember those things that become good memories, they may be all you have when age finds you.
Your mother was wise to teach you those things. You're very wise for such a young woman. I was left to myself and have many regrets having to learn so much the hard way. This song really speaks to me. Children need to be nurtured and guided through youth, not just left to themselves.
" Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." - Proverbs 22:6
Time goes by so fast, it does feel like I was young yesterday. Life is for living the best way you can.
This song has been covered a number of times over the years, probably most famously by Dusty Springfield in 1970. But a less known fact is that the song itself was a remake of a 1964 song titled _Hier Encore,_ by French singer Charles Aznavour.
Also, much more recently, the melody sounds very similar to Adele's _Million Years Ago._
If you live a life without regrets you haven't risked anything and really haven't lived at all.
I heard this song when I was 'young' and In college In the 60's. Another song from that time is September of My Years by Frank Sinatra. I thought both songs were nice and the words were meaningful. However, they are more so now. And yes Angela, we all have regrets some more than others. You just don't want to dwell to long on those regrets.
Roy was a great singer and instrumentalists' this song was written and sung by Charles Aznavour a French singer lyricst, actor and diplomat another great song he wrote was "She" the main song in the movie "Notting Hill" sung by Elvis Costello. Peace out.
Roy is a great singer And he can play any thing with strings. If want to see. Great check Roy doing the great pretender back in the mid 60s. You will like it😊
You're my favorite person who does these reactive videos. You're a sweetheart.
Yesterday I turned 16. I got my driver's license, drove around town, so happy to have my freedom. With my car, I can go anywhere, do anything, glad to be alive. Today, I am 66, going on 67. I will be lucky to have another 20 years of life to live. I still drive my car, and enjoy life, but it really does go by so fast. I'm still glad to be alive, but now I realize it won't last forever. It is depressing, but that is life. Enjoy it while you can.
Roy Clark was an accomplished musician and one of the greatest guitarist ever.
As a kid, I enjoyed watching Roy on Hee Haw. Yes, the jokes were corny, but the talent of Roy on guitar or banjo couldn’t be matched by many on TV.
Oh, my dear child, thank you for waiting until the song to be over before you gave your reaction. I love this song, I don't have a lot of time left, maybe a year or year and a half and when my time is over, 2 of my cousins are going to sing this at my funeral.
This lady is lovely
If only i was young
I have maybe 2 years left, and my life will be over, I've had a good life, a very loving husband that has been with me for all of my life, we met when we were 10 and got engaged secretly when we were 12, we were married at 18 back in 1977 raised 4 kids, we have 10 grandkids, 5 great grandkids, of course everyone has a few regrets, but I don't dwell on them, when my time does come, my cousin is going to sing this for me at my gravesite. My husband tries to make each day full of happy memories and our kids are hoping for a miracle, I have stage 2 lung cancer. Our kids are grown with families of their own, my biggest regret is having to leave my husband behind, I know our kids will take care of him especially our middle daughter, her husband already told my husband when mom's gone, you're coming to live with us, no if, ands or buts, about it, and that makes me feel better.
Roy Clark was a Master of stringed instruments. Try "Malaguena"" for his mastery of a guitar.
People always have regrets no matter what they claim! Hardly anything is within our control regardless what people say! Let us see how it all turns out!
It was about not thinking about the future, more specifically, it was also about being self centered, and ending up alone
The interesting thing about this is it's a song about _not_ appreciating our younger years as _precious_ and ones to treat as exquisite jewels - not stopping to smell the roses and always looking to the next conquest. And most young people don't know the ailments and frailties of being old, so they can't possibly truly appreciate being young.
Finally someone played this, thank you
Time Flys when we're young, then before you know it you look into the mirror and your old
Roy Clark He showed me how to play the guitar I used to put them little dots on my guitar door Royal Clark guitar book😅😅❤
D white D white yocum he goes a 1000 miles from nowhere he'll take you there I'll tell you what that smooth 1000 miles from nowhere by DY yocum❤❤
Sometimes a 1000 miles from nowhere Hey that's a pretty good place😅😅
Thank you I love that song😊
That's the only way this song can get the message across to young people who live wild
I remember in the 1970s Roy Clark was on the Hee Haw show
this song is by Charles Aznazour - Hier Encore
Music is very powerful, can convey any mood, or situation if well written both as lyrics, and melody and done in the right style. Roy Clark was one of the world's top notch guitarists, but it was not shown here.
If you liked and understood the message how could you not like the song. The song was the message.
Young people??? The song describes them, you.
Most people, incl me, live their life as if it s just a test-run and as if the REAL life they really want can be lived later on at anytime, but then time is running out and at some point you suddenly notive it indeed has run out to do certain things......
I first heard this song probably in 1969 when I was 9 years old. I couldn't emotionally relate to it because I was too young to appreciate the lyrics. Now that's different because of age and I realize now that Roy Clark first sang this song when he had a lot more living to do. I believe he died a few years ago. This is a memorable song, and I haven't heard it in its entirety in perhaps 50-years.
That is the Truth!
When I was only a wee tad (I was born in 65) I recall Roy Clark playing 3 songs on his guitar at the same time. I don't remember exactly which ones but I think it was the star spangled banner, yankee doodle, and one other patriotic song, and it was flawless! The man was a step above a master guitarist.
Stop with the fake memories lol, what's with GenX always fabricating their memories? I've never seen other generations do this...
@@bigolebot is it painful being stupid? If not it should be.
We have all done it girl! That's what we do.
Originally sung by Charles Aznavour, This version by Roy Clark is probably the most widely known, but I personally like Glen Campbell's and also Willie Nelson's. This is one of those songs where the lyrics and the music go together so well that I can deeply feel and relate to the sentiments expressed.
Most widely known in US . In EUrope the Aznavour version is the only known version.
I wished I would have known you were doing this song reaction to the great Roy Clark. I would have sent you a link to a better quality version! Anywho, as a kid I used to listen to this masterful musician on the HeeHaw show in the 1980s and he was sooo good!! I wasn't the greatest country music fan, but my dad introduced me to that. Great times, great music and great people. I will cherish such for the rest of my life.
It was a good song and the words were deep, I agree we all have regrets but as you get older I feel you need to let go out of our regrets and hopefully some of them were good memories
Master musician.
That was his signature song, and a beautiful one it was.
Your Mother is a blessed Woman, and so are you.
Check out Mr. Roy playing "Malaguena".. ♠W.G.
He sang this at Mickey Mantle’s funeral.
If it had strings he could play it. And play it well!!
Imagine having to pay for yesterday- I am, at 68!
Nobody sings this great song like Charles Aznavour!
He does FREE free that's a good song❤❤
Willie Nelson recently came out with a cover version. It's excellent, as is Roy Clark's version. But, here Roy is young and Willie is in his 80s...
They say Roy Clark was a good hearted man
If you want to cheer up go and listen to “Thank God And Greyhound.(She’s Gone)“. It’s another Roy Clark song. If you haven’t heard it another song that will make you think is a song by Terry Jacks called “Seasons in the Sun.”
You should listen to Thank God And Greyhound by him. One of my favorites. This is also a favorite of mine.
A great reflection song of youth is "IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR."
Frank Sinatra and The Kingston Trio (1961 album release) both give great renditions of this song. Frank's version is more haunting due to his rich voice. Give this masterpiece a listen.
Dwight Yokum he does a song code a 1000 miles a 1000 miles from nowhere all right❤❤
He was an extremely gifted musician ... may I suggest "right or left at oak street " for a lighter song
Hi Angela, Lovely song that gets even more meaningful as you get older written by the French singer Charles Aznavour it's been covered by most major artists including Glen Campbell,Shirley Bassey,Willie Nelson etc but my personal favourite is Andy William's version Cheers Jim, Surrey,UK🎶X

Incredible guitar player... A master of the instrument.... listen to Malaguena by Roy Clark
