Turning styrofoam to everyone's favorite carcinogen, benzene!

  • In today's video I'm making benzene from the commonly found polymer Styrofoam aka polystyrene. By performing a series of chemical reactions such as pyrolysis and oxidation I was successfully able to make a small amount of benzene from OTC sources.
Warning performing the actions seen in this video can be dangerous. Pyrolysis oil is carcinogenic, benzene is also carcinogenic and potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizer.
    Enjoy! :)

From what I've tried out to not have to deal with the nightmare that is the solidified mass of polystyrene, dissolving it then laying it out on large sheets of baking paper and waiting for the acetone to evaporate gives you somewhat easy to deal with sheet like material. make sure to spread it out kinda thin cause then you can cut it up into pieces later with like a hacksaw or something.

Also, for higher temperature distillations id recommend a digital thermometer setup, which can be easily made with a K type thermocouple, an NMR tube (or similar size glass tube) and some sort of thermally conducting substance (like thermal paste or something) to make the thermocouple have a better thermal conductance.

Shouldn't phenylacetic acid be the product of the oxidation of styrene instead of benzoic acid? I mean styrene has 2 carbons and benzoic acid acid just 1. Thats why you het benzoic acid from toluene. Just asking I'm not an expert
