Mary died in Part 3 because Cordelia died in King Lear. That's where he got the famous King Lear howl that Michael does after holding Mary/Cordelia's dead body, recreating the classic imagery from the play.
We finally get a proper ending in Part 3 that matches King Lear. Michael Corleone's King Lear howl was as good as any I've ever seen. "Howl, howl, howl! O, you are men of stones! Had I your tongues and eyes, I’d use them so That heaven’s vault should crack. She’s gone forever."

I actually rewatched all three movies last week. And part I is NOT perfect by any stretch of the imagination. It has severe pacing issues pretty much from when Michael leaves the country up to his return. It also jumps ahead in time without any real sense of said time having elapsed. Part II is better paced for sure but had its own problems, mainly the back and forth between Vito's backstory and Michael's ongoing story. It's a decent movie and I wouldn't call it a disaster by any means. It had more to live up to than any other movie ever made and suffered some pretty unfair criticism because of that. 1&2 are solid 10/10 movies. I'd give 3 a 7/10.
I wouldn't call it a complete disaster. I would however say it was a seriously missed opportunity. That is the issue with directors who try to break away from what got them there. The Godfather made Coppola and he got his success, notoriety and Oscars from Parts I and II. Instead of capitalizing while hot and making Godfather III in the late 70s or early 80s to complete the story with the death of Michael...and leaving open the door for a continuation with Vincent as the head of the family in the early 90s...he allowed his empire to languish. Then when in dire need of money he had lost all of the influence that he had in the early 70s and had to bend to the studios. Lucas did something similar with Star Wars. Had he jumped on the Extended Universe Timothy Zahn (Thrawn) trilogy and made the sequels before the actors got too old he could have maintained control and not had to sell it to Disney. It should have been 1997 Episode VII, 2000 Episode IX and 2003 Episode X ending with Han, Leia and Luke's kids as the new generation that could head up E 11-13 down the road when they are older. Then he could have taken some time and made the prequels. 2007 - Episode I 2010 - Episode II 2013 - Episode III By 2017 (14 years after Episode X) he could have written and had someone else direct Episode XII 2020 - Episode XIII 2023 - Episode XIV And that pretty much would begin an entirely new trilogy with new younger heroes and a send off/hand off from the original trilogy heroes. Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda.
For me the first two were about consequences from living a life and those affected by it. The third felt like it was about forgiveness and redemption despite the events with their daughter it felt like the movie wanted me to be sorry for Michael or even Kay and for me it fell flat and undermined the first two movies. His long life dying alone was his punishment and the first two movies set that up perfectly, it’s a shame the third one doesn’t respect that.
The film is a solid one. I never watch the first two films without watching the third. I don't skip it. Here are my scores for the trilogy: The Godfather: 10/10 The Godfather, Part II: 9/10 The Godfather, Part III: 8/10
19:56 That's Carlo Gambino not Paul Castellano! However, they were cousins and Vito & Michael were both partially based on the two of them (and a few other guys) IMO.
Great video. I'm a big godfather fan. Tom hagar was missed in the third entry. The cousin story line should been cut out in my opinion. Where was Connie's kids and sonny's other kids

The way Sophia died was like comical. She’s standing there with a bullet wound blast on her front, with blood all over, and only when she looks down does she ‘realise’ she should be dead from the wound, and so she dies. It’s ridiculous, and I wonder why no one ever mentions this.

I know she’s not a good actress but to avoid being thrown out of the film with every line I decided that his daughter is a bit slow if you know what I mean
I saw The Godfather Part III on it's opening day on Christmas Day 1990. I went with my mother, a fellow Godfather fan. It was sold out so it was a big deal. It was different from the other 2. It just made me go home to watch the first 2. The incest storyline made me uncomfortable. The story written by Vincent Patrick could have worked. He wrote the novel and screenplay The Pope Of Greenwich Village starring Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts, who was approached to star in a Godfather 3 in 1979. It was to be directed by John Guillerman. The film The Pope Of Greenwich Village was meant to star Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, but they both backed out of the film.

If that's the connection or not, I don't know. But it's at least worth mentioning, considering the association with fallen beings and people (as connected to Lucifer). It's very esoteric but something Coppola and others involved with the writing would be familiar with due, at minimum, to intensive attention to detail.

Here’s a better premise. Michael doubled down, his reach grew larger and Anthony became a politician. Michael gets investigated for his ties to the costanostra and Anthony goes against him the entire film, until the end and we find out they were planning something together all the while 😊

It is NOT that bad of a movie. In fact, the “Godfather coda: the death of Michael Corleone” is actually a good movie.
I hated 3 as a teenager but enjoy Coda now. It's as enjoyable as any other gangster film, if a tier below 1 or 2.
Good is so relative, isn't it.
2007 - Episode I
2010 - Episode II
2013 - Episode III
By 2017 (14 years after Episode X) he could have written and had someone else direct Episode XII
2020 - Episode XIII
2023 - Episode XIV
And that pretty much would begin an entirely new trilogy with new younger heroes and a send off/hand off from the original trilogy heroes.
Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda.
@38:38 The longer you stare at this newspaper article, the more jank it gets.
22:45 “if Michael pulled some strings” see what ya did there!
The film is a solid one. I never watch the first two films without watching the third. I don't skip it. Here are my scores for the trilogy:
The Godfather: 10/10
The Godfather, Part II: 9/10
The Godfather, Part III: 8/10
ii is the best one
19:56 That's Carlo Gambino not Paul Castellano!
However, they were cousins and Vito & Michael were both partially based on the two of them (and a few other guys) IMO.
Cheers for the correction
Great video. I'm a big godfather fan. Tom hagar was missed in the third entry. The cousin story line should been cut out in my opinion. Where was Connie's kids and sonny's other kids
Not to nitpick or anything, but the puppet show. Yup. Remember Don Fanuci seeing it (GF 1) and saying "That's too violent for me!" The crowd laughing. On his way home to his fate during the festival. (A big nit to miss, so I had to pick it🥺)
I love the slow, yet extreme shift the "theory time" announcement has made over the last few years
The way Sophia died was like comical. She’s standing there with a bullet wound blast on her front, with blood all over, and only when she looks down does she ‘realise’ she should be dead from the wound, and so she dies. It’s ridiculous, and I wonder why no one ever mentions this.
It’s like a looney tunes death, and all the emotional anguish that’s supposed to come from Al Pacino is completely ruined.
It happens my friend was shot twice right next to me and didn't even know until we saw the smoke coming out of his jacket only then he realized he was hit thank God he lived so yeah it's possible
@@almauerhan7091 hmm I’m not calling you a lier but I can’t just accept what you just said as truth
@@RichieW90210 Sounds like you've never served in combat. Why should you, when other people are willing to risk dying in your place so that you can deny that they've ever been shot from the safety of your home?
@@erwinquiachon8054 I was gonna say were you in the army? So did you have armoured vests on?
Sophia copolla was wearing a gown. And it was a fatal wound. No offence, your friend wasnt hit by a fatal wound.
I’m trying to be nice and not call you a lier, in the nicest possible way.
It was a best picture nominee. Let that sink in.
Best Picture has been DEI'ed so forget about it.
Didn't mention sonny's kids during the part Mike's dancing with his daughter. Well the twins I know he had. The ending with Mike and Kay getting back together, and him getting hit at there re-nuptials😮. Epic
You guys are nuts. It's a really good movie. Just not as good as the first 2, which are 2 of the best films of all time.
Not sure why you're so defensive since almost every comment said the same thing you did, lol
excelente video
another cracking review .
19:53 is that the Shah of Iran on the right?
Before did twenty f***ing years in the can!
I JUST saw the Coda version. It is a little more palatable than the original theatrical release. But only slightly.
I thought that GF3 was Ok. What killed it was being compared to the two masterpieces that were the Godfather I & 11.
When I watch the first part I always have to watch all 3. The third is the worst but there are moments I always look forward to seeing that help bring it all full circle, Talia Shires performance being my fav part of that.
Thanks buddy
No, it’s not that bad. Had Winona Ryder been Mary Corleone and if they had paid Duvall what he was due, then people would have ranked it up there with 1 and 2. Pacino was still excellent.
I absolutely love this movie. Just like the previous two, once I start to watch it, I have to go all the way to the end!
It has some of the greatest individual scenes in the whole trilogy, Kay meeting Michael in the hospital got me teary eyed
Michael says “the sucker I get the wiser I become, when I’m dead I’m going to be a really smart man” it all goes full circle in the last scene
I actually loved the movie
I was lucky. I just happened to watch part 3 first. It holds a special place in my heart because of that, plus it didn't ruin the first 2 at all. In fact, i think it enhanced them.
My neighbors spell Mancini the same and say MAN SEE NEE. PLUS MY HUSBAND IS SICILIAN AND THATS HOW ITS SAID !!!
So again YOU'RE WRONG 😮
It just shows that Italian Americans are just Americans; a theme of the films, of course.
Duuude I miss your battles 😔 how come they're being removed from UA-cam? ☺ Good to see you're doing great though ☺
I know theres a couple people that will use em as a way to jump on me so just easier having the peace of mind, they will go back up eventually just want some distance from em, I'm actually sponsoring the next DF event as a thanks to Eurgh for being cool about it so i've still got some connection
@@heavyspoilers genuinely wasn't expecting a reply, I'd say you weren't expecting a comment like this either 😂 aww I was enjoying watching them 😔 man you're a beast! 💪
Connie made reference to Fredo drowning in coda. Did she really think he drowned or deep in her heart does she know that Michael had him killed off? I always wondered that and did she put the poison in the cannoli? Or did somebody else? It kind of seemed like Connie was getting a sinister side.
Who's Vido?
I know she’s not a good actress but to avoid being thrown out of the film with every line I decided that his daughter is a bit slow if you know what I mean
Paul, when do you make a analysis about "Ounce upon a time in America" ???
Michael's charity is kinda like U Po Kyin building pagodas in Burmese Days both in motivation and in futility in terms of actual personal benefit.
Love how rich people claim bankruptcy just to get richer.
PLEASE CONSIDER DOING BOARDWALK EMPIRE!! I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!!
Orange 🍊 is the only color that breaks down to the number 33 in numerology, which is associated with the 1/3 fallen angels and (supposedly influenced by this) the highest *known* (honorary) degree in the Freemasons. If that's the connection or not, I don't know. But it's at least worth mentioning, considering the association with fallen beings and people (as connected to Lucifer). It's very esoteric but something Coppola and others involved with the writing would be familiar with due, at minimum, to intensive attention to detail.
Its terrible. That incest plot with Vincent & Mary was AWFUL
My brother saw this in the theater after loving the first two and he said it was like being kicked in the head. 😂
The third one wasn’t horrible, but it could have been better. It just couldn’t hold a candle to the first two.
I feel that the mispronunciation of European names by the descendants of Europeans in America is quite common - see the way they say Lewandowski as Lou-an-dow-ski instead of lev-van-dov-ski
I watched part 1and 2 this week . I tried to watch part 3 tonight but I just couldn’t stomach it. It seemed like a made for tv movie and I was so bored.
A fantastic movie, definetly not at the same level as 1 and 2 but still a great watch with some absolutely fantastic actors except Sofia Coppola who was terrible, very unlucky that we could not get Winona Ryder for that role, she was set to play it but pulled out because of being overworked or something like that.
People who say this is a bad movie are crazy.
29:01 GOTTI- not Gallo - was known as “The Dapper Don.” John Gotti was head of the Gambino crime family.
Here’s a better premise. Michael doubled down, his reach grew larger and Anthony became a politician. Michael gets investigated for his ties to the costanostra and Anthony goes against him the entire film, until the end and we find out they were planning something together all the while 😊
