This isn't really what I'd call soot staining because it's superficial. Soot will actually impregnate brickwork and bond with the surface which means that only one particular acid (or abrasion) will get rid of it.

LOL - - My guess is if you used the brush ONLY you would end up with the same results. Notice that the solution as it runs down to the bricks below isn't removing soot/carbon or changing colors. Yes I know you can see it on one spot on the brick just below the one he's cleaning... That's because the BRASS bristle scuffed it and wore away a surface layer exposing what appeared to be new, cleaned brick. LOL
what brush can i use from walmart? i plan to use mold armor product since my brick siding is really black with residue just like yours from rain water over the years.
I second that "negative ghost rider". 3500 psi barely touched it. Inside the firebox in the house with wet vac catching the water. I was shocked that 3500psi did almost nothing.

Soot is basically a grease.....and grease cutter will work....lol

I tried a 200 psi pressure washer on my fire bricks .. didn't do much at all.

Oops, I meant 2000 psi. Now I just put my bricks into a furnace to burn the soot off. Your solution looks a lot easier.

You should have someone use Dry Ice blasting. It works great. Available in most cities.
