  • I've been thinking about cataloguing my ink collection for a while now - it'll make it easier for me to pick out colours and more importantly stave off the urge to buy more for a little bit longer! In this video I used an old Archer and Olive notebook (not the best choice in hindsight) to swatch and review (almost) all the inks I currently own.
    All of these inks and supplies were purchased by myself, this is not an advert or sponsored post (though if Ferris Wheel Press would like to send me some inks to trial, I would not complain!)

    I really enjoyed your video. I loved hearing your thoughts on all your inks. I have unmassed a rather large collection of inks over the last year since my journey started, so it was lovely to hear what you had to say. I am also a sucker for a shimmer ink. New subscriber and looking forward to checking out more of your content!

    It might be that you're leaning the dip pen too much. Try keeping it a bit more upright when you're writing. Might also be a bit too much ink on it.

      Thanks, I will have to practice more. I think some of the blobs were definitely from having too much ink on the pen. I don't think I hold it in the best way either! x

    For the first time ever, I bought myself a fountain pen with a convertor so that I can use my own ink colours, and I was looking for ink swatches to decide what inks to get first, when I came across your video. It's exactly what I needed, and the inks you've got are GORGEOUS!! 😍 I use Archer and Oliver notebooks for journaling, but I don't think they're really meant for use with fountain pen ink. While they are 160 gsm so great for not getting bleed through with your average pens, the paper isn't coated so I find that ink feathers. I'm still looking for my favourite paper, but in the meantime I'm enjoying playing with what I've got, and now I think I need to go excuse myself and put in a crazy big order with Cult Pens, for Diamine and Ferris Wheel Press inks!!! Thank you!

      Ah so pleased it helped! It’s a big pond to jump into be warned 😅 you’ll end up spending a lot of money on ink! Hope you get some that you really like. Both Diamine and d FWP are amazing producers!

      If you’re wanting fountain pen friendly paper, tomoe river (it’s changed in the last couple years, so you may see some difference if you get some older paper compared to now), Claire fontaine, Mitsubishi bank paper, life, rhodia (doesn’t show sheening as well as others), Midori, stalogy, Iroful, etc.

      I like my Kokuyo Campus papers similar to Tomoe River paper but more affordable. It's loose papers but I keep it in a binder. Bought mine on Amazon. Muji's loose papers are also supposed to be good for fountain pens. 😇🩷🙏🙌

    I do a lot of painting and I've always stuck by the adage that you should do your swatches on the medium you will use for the finished product. I started fountain pen swatching on Col-O-Ring cards but they are nowhere close to the paper I use when I use my fountain pens, so I ditched them for a Tomoe River Paper notebook.

      That's very sensible. I should definitely have done that! It's tricky for me to justify buying 'another' notebook (especially when I've got the A+O lying around unused) but for this purpose perhaps even using my older Hobonichi Weeks note pages would have been a better choice. x

    Diamine aurora borealis is a standard ink so there shouldn't be any shimmer but there is a slight red sheen on certain papers. I love that ink too :) you've got a lovely collection of inks.

    This would have looked great if you had used fountain pen friendly paper. I know everyone is obsessed with Archer & Olive 160 gsm paper but it is definitely not for fountain pens. The ink looks so much better in your 5 year journal.

      Yes, definitely the wrong paper! Took me by surprise how bad it was. They do look loads better on the Hobonichi paper :) I’ll have to try and get my hands on some loose sheets or a notebook of fountain pen friendly paper x

    Archer and Olive paper is terrible for fountain pens- I got into their journals before I got into fountain pens, so I have a few empty ones that I'm begrudgingly journaling in until I use them up and can switch to Midori. With a fine nib they don't feather (usually), but the ink color is so flat. Dip pens and broad nibs look like a mess. What's weird, though, is that A&O recently released a fountain pen! Maybe they can't tell how bad it is

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans  3 місяці тому

      I really didn't expect it to be so bad! It's a shame as it was fun to do. Perhaps the dip pen also made it worse. I fear my inexperience and knowledge of paper quality/composition has been highlighted in this decision, ha!
      Yes, you'd think if they wanted to branch out in fountain pens they'd have paper that works with fountain pen ink really! x

    Aurora Borealis has a magenta sheen and no shimmer. It does shade. You might've gotten some glitter in your bottle.
    Aside from that, glass dip pens are just terrible. They don't hold much ink and what they do hold ends up on lower case e and r.
    Most people are migrating to metal nib dip pens.

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans  3 місяці тому

      Thank you, I will have to give it another shot. I could see a bit of the magenta sheen on the Hobonichi swatch but nothing on the Archer and Olive paper - though this could be a paper fault.
      Glad to know it wasn’t all technique! I will have to look into a metal nip dip pen. Appreciate the comment :) x

    Hi, this is my first time seeing your videos. I will subscribe. I am so surprised to see the way the Archer and olive paper behaved with fountain pen ink! Why such the following when it really does bleed terribly? Is it bleeding with just the swatch, or is it bleeding with the writing as well?

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans  3 місяці тому +1

      They are really popular and - tbf - very good for pens like Tomboe markers and heavier stamp inks. They don't have a lot of ghosting or bleed through because of the paper weight but just not great for fountain pen inks! I think most people don't use fountain pens in them. x
