trying out a bullet journal system again
If you watched my last video, you'll know me and my Hobonichi Weeks had a difference of opinions. As such, I've been using my Archer and Olive bullet journal a lot more recently, and wanted to show you how it's been going.
Looking forward into 2025, I am somewhat madly considering the Sterling Ink B6 Common Planner, which is both bigger and more rigid in layout than the Hobonichi Weeks. Hopefully I can settle on what I want soon!

Mid Year System Review - Why Is It Going So Wrong?!

All aboard the planner struggle bus this week! In this video I take a look through my Hobonichi Weeks planner and consider why it's just not working for me any more. Whilst my Five Year Diary seems to be going (relatively) well, I just cannot keep myself interested in my Weeks planner. I am contemplating my options - Push through with another Weeks but in a plainer style? Go back to bullet jour...

Now that I've had my Sprocket for around 6 months, I thought it was time to give an honest review of what I think of this photo printer. But is it worth the £90 price tag? All products in this review ...

How's my reading going in 2024?... Best not to ask really :/

It has not been a good year for reading, I think we can safely say. My little reading tracker is very empty, my bookshelf continues to grow and my review pages are as blank as my mind most days before 10am. But still, my literary fire has recently been relit and I have high hopes that Steinbeck might just save me from literature hell. Who'd have thought a literary classic would be the one to re...

If you're struggling to keep up with layouts and spreads in your planners because of the time it takes you, this video proves that you don't need to set aside more than 10 to 15 minutes every week (maybe half an hour if you do it fortnightly) to create beautiful and effective spreads that work for you. It's the final week in February which brings with it a couple of special birthdays in our household. I did my first commonplace book without knowing it has a name. I did it because I read a lot, listen to audiobooks, and listen to podcasts, and when I was still working my co-workers or friends asked where I had read or heard that information, and I couldn't find that information again. I follow quite many podcasts (Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson and many others) and I couldn't remember who said and what. So, I began to make few notes about podcasts (date, Spotify or UA-cam, Pinterest, book's name, etc.). I make notes about things I am interested or maybe something brief mention what is the origin of the word or thing. I keep my commonplace book in English if I find the information in English, Swedish if the information is written in Swedish, or my own language Finnish. I think so I can keep the information correct, because I could make a translation error. Now i am retired so I have all the time in this world to make them more interesting, add pictures, lyrics, poems etc. Thank you very much, I learned a lot from you!

      Hi Anne, that sounds like a great use of the system! I love how you use your different languages too - I can imagine it would become confusing if you tried to translate between them all (as well as the translation errors, like you say!). I hope you continue to enjoy common placing and using your new time to get more creative :) x

      The dimensions of my vision board were 8.4cm by 17cm (for one side of the double page spread). I had to play with the printer settings a little bit and it was very much trial and error but if you go for that, it should be roughly close enough and then you can adjust it with printing at either 100%, 105% or 95% etc. :) x

      I've pretty much had an A5 bullet journal or a Hobonichi Weeks, so not tried a lot else! There's a lot I like about the Hobonichi systems - love the paper, the grid style, font, and accessibility of purchase. It's going to take me a while and a lot of research I think to find something else! x

      @@IllustriousShadowPlans Just to give some information on these two: Sterling Ink has notebooks with page numbers in almost every size, including but not limited to A5, B5, TN regular and passport, Weeks size, B6, B6 Slim, pocket… I feel like I’m missing some. The common planner comes in a most sizes (I think the only one I mentioned above that it doesn’t come in right now is B6 slim) and is Hobonichi style - with months pre-planned, weeks (both vertical and horizontal for most sizes) all in the beginning and you can either purchase a half year (272 pages) or a full year (520 pages). There’s some extra stuff in the beginning (quarterly trackers and such). She also came out with a compact this past year, which has 272 pages but a full year of monthlies and weeklies. The paper is 52gsm tomoe river paper (like Hobonichi) and the covers are PU leather (for most, if not all). The grid size changes a bit depending on the notebook size, I’ve seen 3.6mm x 3.9mm, 3.9mm x 3.9mm, and 4mm x 3.9mm. The Weeks is slightly smaller, if I remember but when you’re talking 3.5 or 3.9mm the difference is very slight. Papertess Designs has their planner that comes in B6 and A5. This one is a horizontal layout, where the weeklies and blank daily pages are interspersed in the monthlies, so you get a monthly spread, two blank pages, a weekly, and seven blank pages, the next weekly, seven blank pages, so on. She also has a weeks size (I believe) planner that I know far less about because I’ve never been interested in it but it’s got a horizontal layout on one side and some task lists and a scheduler on the other. It’s an interesting and unique layout, I just personally have no use for as much as is shown. It’s also tomoe river 52gsm paper and I believe she keeps her grid at a 4x4mm grid. I’ve also heard people describe the font she uses as “romantic” - I don’t know what that means in font, but I do find I prefer the font on Papertess Design planners much more when I see it. And the covers for her notebooks/planners are actual heaven to touch. They’re soft and very slightly textured and so squishy. While Sterling ink’s notebooks are my personal favorite, Papertess designs covers win hands down. This was pretty long but I wanted to help give you a brief intro to them, since they could be planners you’d prefer and were previously mentioned as an option.

      @myriaml3714 Місяць тому

      If I can add something : Papertess designs also has a standard TN size notebook. That is bigger than the hobo weeks. The layout is 1 horizontal week followed by 7 blank grid pages and so on. The months are bulked at the beginning of the book

I think your book is really pretty, and it's your book so you should do what you want!! For the quote on the navy blue card, maybe trace over the text with a white gel pen? Would a non-indexed commonplace book like yours be similar to floralegium, or do you think there are significant differences?

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans Місяць тому

      Interesting point! I think in my mind the largest difference would be that in a floralegium the text is directly related to the illustrations, and is more encyclopaedic in nature, cataloguing for long term preservation rather than for fun like I do. I do think you're right in that a non-indexed commonplace book probably does need a more specific name as it straddles the two concepts! x

    I love your commonplace book. Making it pretty like that would make you want to go back and read it again, which is also the point of them. I've been keeping one for years and found that I didn't like the book format (I never had any index). I now use index cards and keep them in photo boxes. That way, it's easier for me to find the things I want. Recipes for example. Rather than hunting through several books, I can just go to the right section in the cards. Obviously, it's not nearly as attractive as your book though. Thank you xx

    Cloud Atlas is a wonder unto itself. I loved the book, but it is not an easy book. After Steinbeck, I would recommend something light. You will need the break before Cloud Atlas.

    Loved your video, thank you! It will be a wonderful document of your baby's first five years. I wish the diary didn't have that quote at the bottom of each blank page--it prevents you from writing all the way across on your final year. Is it weird that I'm thinking of that? Probably. 🤦‍♀

      Thanks for your comment! Yes, there is some kind of issue with the sound that's happening between me adding it and me uploading the videos. It's odd as on the video editing software the music is turned down to 20% and I've turned the speech up to 150% which sounds fine on my end but something seems to happen to the levels once it's uploaded! To avoid this my later videos don't have backing music. x

    Thanks for showing off these interesting inks on your ink-book. Question: why would you not rather use thick sketch paper (150-300 grams) to prevent bulges and bleeding? Kind regards, Patrick

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans 4 місяці тому

      That's a good question Patrick! My gut instinct would be that the inks would likely bleed more as the heavier GSM papers tend to be rougher and fountain pen ink does better on a smoother paper (which is why I thought the Archer and Olive paper would work originally). The Tomoe River paper I've used here is roughly 70 GSM, the Archer and Olive I used in the last video was 160 GSM. I'm loading a lot of ink on the paper when I do the little swatches which causes the bulging and ghosting, when you write 'normally' you don't put so much down in one go so it's not a problem generally. x

    It might be that you're leaning the dip pen too much. Try keeping it a bit more upright when you're writing. Might also be a bit too much ink on it.

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans 4 місяці тому

      Thanks, I will have to practice more. I think some of the blobs were definitely from having too much ink on the pen. I don't think I hold it in the best way either! x

    I do a lot of painting and I've always stuck by the adage that you should do your swatches on the medium you will use for the finished product. I started fountain pen swatching on Col-O-Ring cards but they are nowhere close to the paper I use when I use my fountain pens, so I ditched them for a Tomoe River Paper notebook.

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans 4 місяці тому

      That's very sensible. I should definitely have done that! It's tricky for me to justify buying 'another' notebook (especially when I've got the A+O lying around unused) but for this purpose perhaps even using my older Hobonichi Weeks note pages would have been a better choice. x

  • @kirstenw2717

    Archer and Olive paper is terrible for fountain pens- I got into their journals before I got into fountain pens, so I have a few empty ones that I'm begrudgingly journaling in until I use them up and can switch to Midori. With a fine nib they don't feather (usually), but the ink color is so flat. Dip pens and broad nibs look like a mess. What's weird, though, is that A&O recently released a fountain pen! Maybe they can't tell how bad it is

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans 4 місяці тому

      I really didn't expect it to be so bad! It's a shame as it was fun to do. Perhaps the dip pen also made it worse. I fear my inexperience and knowledge of paper quality/composition has been highlighted in this decision, ha! Yes, you'd think if they wanted to branch out in fountain pens they'd have paper that works with fountain pen ink really! x

    Hi, this is my first time seeing your videos. I will subscribe. I am so surprised to see the way the Archer and olive paper behaved with fountain pen ink! Why such the following when it really does bleed terribly? Is it bleeding with just the swatch, or is it bleeding with the writing as well?

    • @IllustriousShadowPlans
      @IllustriousShadowPlans 4 місяці тому

      They are really popular and - tbf - very good for pens like Tomboe markers and heavier stamp inks. They don't have a lot of ghosting or bleed through because of the paper weight but just not great for fountain pen inks! I think most people don't use fountain pens in them. x

    For the first time ever, I bought myself a fountain pen with a convertor so that I can use my own ink colours, and I was looking for ink swatches to decide what inks to get first, when I came across your video. It's exactly what I needed, and the inks you've got are GORGEOUS!! 😍 I use Archer and Oliver notebooks for journaling, but I don't think they're really meant for use with fountain pen ink. While they are 160 gsm so great for not getting bleed through with your average pens, the paper isn't coated so I find that ink feathers. I'm still looking for my favourite paper, but in the meantime I'm enjoying playing with what I've got, and now I think I need to go excuse myself and put in a crazy big order with Cult Pens, for Diamine and Ferris Wheel Press inks!!! Thank you!

      If you’re wanting fountain pen friendly paper, tomoe river (it’s changed in the last couple years, so you may see some difference if you get some older paper compared to now), Claire fontaine, Mitsubishi bank paper, life, rhodia (doesn’t show sheening as well as others), Midori, stalogy, Iroful, etc.
