For newcomers to alchemy, Alexander Roob's ''alechemy and Mystiicism'' is very inexpensive and has hundreds of gorgeous colour plates. It is a good introduction to the main ideas too, and will direct you to further and more specialist books.

Yes it is challenging indeed. I had no idea that this man was so much more than what we learned at school about him. #neverstopexploring ;-)

Many thanks for this. The role of alchemy has been much overlooked in the development of knowledge. One of the oldest ( and one of the best) public museums in Europe was founded by Sir Elias Ashmole... who also complied and published the Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum,.This is a crucial compendium of alchemical writings which were in private hands until Ashmole intervened. Great early chemistry, and some of the finest metaphysical poetry in the Englsih language. The doctrine that the ''rational'' stands in stark opposition to the world of imagination, mysticism, poetry, etc is a very modern ( and stupid) idea! Once again, sincere thanks for your wonderful work!

This episode was a revelation. It made me think deeper about the relationship between science and magic. Were scientists attempting to unlock the principles of magic in nature or were alchemist searching for the science to make the magic happen? Based on this research, it would appear that Newton was a man obsessed by discovering the laws of nature by any means necessary. He must’ve tried every path. Can you imagine his excitement when he was at last able to put on paper formulas that explained so much?
