    oh cool, thats answered my question, so how do you know what thickness? how can I tell apart from guessing that its a 18mm? or whatever unit? does an 18mm sealed unit mean the gap inside between the glass is 18mm?, so if the glass was say 4mm thick, the overall thickness of the unit would be 18+4+4= 26mm ? etc ?

    Love the simplistic clear video. Thank you. I watched your "window replacement" too, both excellent.
    A question:
    Is there quite a lot of room for tolerance then, if we are just subtracting 10 or 12 mm from total width or height?
    So the measurement doesn't need to me accurate to +/- 1mm then?
    I thought the glass size was a precision fit in the frame. Am I wrong there?

      Houa, not an expert by any means but in other videos they say the use the space (with spacers around glass) to allow for drainage as water dpes get through the rubber seal

    Hi do these measurements apply to frames that have external seals as my windows are old upvc

    • @shaneatkinson
      @shaneatkinson  2 роки тому

      Yes most external beading does require a 10mm deduction in width and hight for clearance

    Hi shane, my mate has burnt the pvc on his window. He’s gonna replace them whole window for a second hand duplicate. How does he measure for replacement? Does he measure the front of window or just the inside frame of the window? Great video by the way, got loads from it

    • @shaneatkinson
      @shaneatkinson  2 роки тому +1

      When measuring windows you should measure from brick to brick widths first at 3 points bottom middle and top incase the opening isn't plumb and take the smallest measurement and minus 10mm and do the same with the hight. Its always good practise to check the internal measurements incase the is large plaster reveals where you could loose the outer frame profile behind it.
      Should this be the case you could ask the window provider for larger outer frame or add ons to be included in the measurements. Hope this is helpful cheers Shane

      Take the window bead off then mark anything flat with measurements 3/16, 7/16, 5/8, 3/4, ect. (I use a putty knife).

      @@marioa.garcia6176 or just measure the edge of the glass once you've popped it out?

    • @barriobarranco
      @barriobarranco 2 роки тому +1

      I've just done my window- using my digital vernier calipers and a sinking square- the whole window frame is 55mm thick, the outer glass is 16mm from the frame using the sinking square and the internal glass is17mm from the frame so 55-(17+16)=22mm....that means for a bathroom window 4mm privacy glass exterior/14mm spacer gap/4mm internal glass = 22mm.... you could of course just use a ruler and a straight edge to check the depth from the frame to the glass...

    Why not just take the beads off and get 100% correct size and thickness ? You will have to take the beads off when you change the unit anyway so might as well get some practice

      Because with distorted seals, peeling tape etc it's very easy to get it wrong! I only just got away with it when I tried it that way - for the next lot I did as the video suggests and all the new windows went in perfectly.

      @@chestermartin2356 if you're a professional then fair enough, but this video is aimed at amateurs who will find if particularly difficult to get the correct thickness without taking it out of the frame, as they are unlikely to have a thickness gauge of any kind..

      Nigel fitz if you’re worried about it getting broken ask for toughened glass.the thickness will remain the same as the existing unit. Although Toughened glass will be more expensive than an ordinary annealed unit but it won’t crack or break in dangerous shards
