When Darron moved them, be put a small dent into the nail bag, and then told him to only move the bags by the bases (so as to not introduce new wrinkles/dents). It still doesn't explain how be influence him to put it in spot 3, but he at least could verify the nail bag was in spot 3. He never shows anyone the nail in the bag. When he reaches into the bag to pull the nail out, there is a camera cut and a slight break in continuity - some footage has been removed there. Check it on frame-by-frame (use the < and > keys). He asked everyone to look away when he mixed up the bags, and he blocked the camera's view of the bags with his body, giving him time to remove the nail at the start. He could then have put the nail back into the bag immediately before revealing it at the end. All the bags were nail-free when slamming down his hand. He got the bags put in a row and pre-chose number 3. Since there were six bags, this gave him two bags in the middle (because he could count from either end). He could then eliminate the outer bags by using both hands (as he did) moving between inner and outer bags in a rhythm that makes it almost inevitable that he can make it look as though an outer bag has been chosen. Watch the video and look at his timing.
I've seen Derren do this live. I think you're right that there was never a nail in any bag but it's not a camera cut, and LMM and cast weren't stooges to the trick. Alternatively, the greatest trick Dereen Brown ever played is convincing people he's not an actual wizard.
@@peterhiggins2928 I'm not saying that there were stooges. Derren probably never uses them. I'm sure he has done it live. However, in THIS video, there is a cut. If you pause the video just before the moment he reveals the nail, and advance it one frame at a time, you can clearly see the jump in continuity.
1. When he moved the nail bag at 3:12 he gave Lin a reference where the nail was. 2. When Lin received the signal, his task was to make sure that the nail bag was in the third place, he made the extra effort to swap the second with the third, unlike other bags. 3. At the beginning of each cycle, Darren hovered his hand over the nail bag then avoided it for the rest of the cycle, just a precaution to eliminate any chance of failing. 4. The last safety trick when 2 bags remained, he hovered extremely slowly so Lin won't accidentally poke him on the third bag.
It's great everyone is trying to work it out. Sorcerer Brown would not have taken a chance with this, but we can expect that there was a bag that was extra weighted but it was not because of the nail, so Lin DID have an inkling about which bag it was and that was suggested in his reactions and the way he ordered the bags. The key is that he wouldn't be sure so that if he didn't put it in that position, Mandrake Brown could still have an effective trick. Of course, we can expect he had multiple adverts in the paper too depending upon the final position - with a different patter/narrative for each one. Bravo, Warlock Brown.
it is perhaps unnecessary but if it was another 'take' then both Derren and Lin-Manuel are incredible at recreating their own stances (and facial expressions) for continuity. What I DID notice is that when the bag with the nail in was closed, the top was more folded down than the bag that ended up at position 3. Very probably a trick nail that can be removed from the base as Derren is putting it into the bag. The other bags having bases in them isn't to make them 'feel' the same, it's so he can put the trick nail back in to any bag's base once the others are squashed.
@@iainjames03 You're smart. The nail can probably be twisted and pulled out of itself so only the head of the nail and maybe a centimeter or 2 of the nail is left inside the base. He even uses a misdirect when he puts the nail in the bag, telling him to "move over there" for no apparent reason other than to distract them. The camera angle also moves at that point, maybe to make what Derren is doing less obvious to the viewer.
The editor is in on the trick and is hiding the moves. How this trick is usually done is that every bag has a base and a nail laying flat. (Note he doesn't let anyone inspect the other bags, he just tells them they all have a plain base and no nail.) When he places the visible base and nail into the bag, it's sleight of hand to slip the nail out and lay it down. He uses the "stand over there" distraction to get everyone to look away, but the editors also cut away for a second to hide the move. When he smashes the bags, he adjusts a few to make sure the top doesn't start to come open and reveal anything. All he has to do now is force bag #3. He starts with 3, knowing Lin isn't going to tap him immediately. He goes 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 5, 2, 1, 3, (at which point he says "whenever you like" to prompt Lin to act, having just left 3) 6, 5, 2, 1. Next one is a very quick 2, 3, then 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 2. Next time: 3, 4, 5, 4, 5, 5, 6. He has to start taking risks now because it would be too obvious if he skips 3 entirely. Next time: 3, 4, 5, 4, 5, 3 (risky!), 5, 4, 5 ... shakes his hands out which resets and deters Lin from patting right away ... 3, 5. Now he's slowly alternating between the final 2 but lingering longer on 4. The edit pointed out by Padraig seems to skip some frames, less than a second but helps hide the move of bringing up the nail. He also instructs Lin to step to the side, so that Lin can't catch the move up close and to draw eyes to Lin moving instead of the bag. It's hard to say exactly how he forces #3 under all circumstances, but you can see many of the moves that go into it. Don't put your hand over 3 often, move off quickly. Start the sequence with 3, knowing they won't tap you immediately. Put your hand over 3 after a distraction -- they won't tap right away then either. Prompt them to act after just leaving 3. What I don't know is what he does if Lin randomly taps him in the 4th sequence when he puts his hand over 3 without a distraction. He might be moving fast enough that the tap is ambiguous and he can just move to the next one like "that's where I was headed when you tapped, so that's what counts." An uncooperative accomplice could catch the moves and force #3, or even say "I want #3" at which point the magician knows the jig is up, but it doesn't ruin the trick. He can just skip the newspaper reveal. He doesn't introduce the idea of the newspaper until after the trick is successful, knowing it has a small chance of not working perfectly. As for the video at the beginning -- who knows, maybe it was a legitimate accident, maybe he made that video specifically to give the trick credibility. It's suspicious that the one time he messed it up, cameras just happened to be rolling. This is an old trick that I've only ever seen done with a nail, so it's 100% false that he "learned" to use a nail from that screw-up. Why would a nail going clean through your hand be better than a screw that gets stuck and doesn't penetrate as far?
im @ 3:50 (I haven't watched the end yet, havent seen the reveal, this is just my prediction) I think the bag 4th from the left or 3rd to last bag has the nail. lets see if im right
It's done as a magic trick, there are different ways of doing it and I'm almost certain Derren doesn't do it the way where you can actually stick your or his hand on the nail, that's why the video of him hurting himself is almost certainly (to me) a red herring. There are ways of doing it without danger. One of most helpful things Derren ever said about what he does is that often when you think it's mentalism its a trick and vice versa! I'll give you a clue.. it's always him that takes the nail out of the paper bag at the end.. Don't you think it would be cooler if he didn't touch it and the other person got it out?!! ;)
@@tomr1056 I think there were empty bases in every bag except the empty one at the start. (Notice they were rolled up at the start.) As Darren placed the base with the nail in into the empty bag, he removed the nail and slid it up his sleeve. So, no matter which bag he slapped down on, it would not have a nail in it. As he reached into the last bag he put the nail into the base that was inside the bag.
Each bag has a base AND a nail which is lying flat at the bottom of the bag. You never see any of those bags opened, but are led to believe that there is nothing but a base without a nail in 5 of the bags. When the base and nail are placed in the bag, the nail is removed and placed flat while it is in the bag. When he's down to one bag, and reaches in, he then uprights the nail once again. He moves so quickly and smoothly, I wonder if the nail is magnetic and catches the base as it is pulled up. Derren Brown's execution is absolutely flawless. His misdirection is perfect! He reinforced the emotion of the trick by saying that it was banned and that it was dangerous. The video reinforced the emotionality of the illusion. When Derren Brown asked the bags only be moved at the bottom, it reinforced the idea that only one bag has a nail that is pointing up, when in fact, there's no nail pointing up anywhere. Bravo, Mr. Brown, bravo!
@@stevenbrown3683 and then to add to that, I think he had a an ad for all six of the bags in that newspaper - and just pointed them to the right one for the moment. He probably had a bit of patter rehearsed for every number too. (e.g. If it was 1, he might say how the pastor talked about there being 1 God etc...)
My guess is: All of the bags have the same stuff, the nail and the base, in them. Notice we never see what is in each bag at the start, or afterwards. And when you slap down on them, the nail moves out of the way. Who knows how many papers were printed, or elsewhere in the paper there could have been "Lin would select bag 1", and "Lin would select bag 2". Derren could have counted from either direction (he said "left to right", but not whose left to right, or he could have made phrases/paper ads for 6 possibilities, and come up with a phrase for each choice. "Lin picked one, for the one true god", "Lin picked 2 for the father and the son", as well as the one for the trinity.
I think the bags all had empty bases in. He probably "palmed" the nail when he put it in the bag, and snuck it back it later. Having the bases set up so the nail can be removed and reinserted from the top wouldn't be hard (nobody really saw the head of the nail to confirm it could only go in from the back of the base) and a super strong magnet would quickly "lock it into place" accurately. But I agree about most of the rest of what you're saying (he only needed at most 3 hidden things in the newspaper, and could have plausibly got away with fewer than that).
2 ways he could have done this - either with rubber nails or hinged nails or a combination. Eg the first nail was real but hinged, which DB made flat when he put in the bag (either that or it was a metal sheath over a rubber nail). All bags contained a fake rubber nail which only DB touched in the end. Position 3 could have been position 4 (depending upon which end you count from) and DB made sure at least one of those were left to the end
He's done it before in a previous show and it was 3rd from the left. Derren Brown isn't one for cheap tricks. He once led a woman into a huge toy store and asked her to choose one toy out of tens of thousands of options. She chose an elephant based on his subtle suggestions. He then showed her his prediction, then led her outside where he had a real giraffe waiting for her. He taught an elderly woman some body language tricks and entered her into a poker competition with a bunch of pros despite never having played before, and she came second with the winner being saved by a very lucky card. He held a seance for a bunch of sceptics like himself, and had them do "psychic" stuff to create a persona and backstory for someone who had died in the building, then they opened a sealed file confirming everything they had come up with, then finally he showed them proof that he made it all up and forced it on them. Whatever the trick is it's psychological, the nail was always in bag 3, every other bag was empty.
Darren Brown's work is generally very impressive. This is one on my least favorite bits, though. So, much more to the presentations that he usually does.
ua-cam.com/video/lfdqfXw2Hs0/v-deo.html he dose a simmilar but id say better version of this here. Lin was lucky he got to keep his shoes and socks on!
Yeah but Derren was the one that put the nail in the bag and folded it. He could have folded it in such a way that he'd know which bag contains the nail. Also, Darren chose the bag too, so he could have previously marked the bag with a tiny dot to identify it as well. Then he just doesn't put his hand over the one with the nail in it, or place it there long enough for Lin to tap him. As for the newspaper, he could have had different ads naming different nail positions in the same news paper, and just had to turn the page to the correct one.
As the beginning shows, Derren has done this before. Nice touch with the Times ad. Keith Barry also did a slight variation of this as the last 'trick' in a TED Talk performance in 2004. He blindfolded himself. It too was quite convincing. ua-cam.com/video/GigYWy2UmOY/v-deo.html
Derren also did a version of this with cups on the floor and a knife under it. And his volunteer matt had to stomp on them ua-cam.com/video/lfdqfXw2Hs0/v-deo.html Very simmilar though in this version the volunteer got to keep his shoes and socks on
The bag with the nail is folded the same way as the bottom crease. There is one other bag like that, but the crease is less defined. Anyone else catch that?
I think Darren just removed the nail as he placed only the base into the empty bag at the start, and all of the rolled up bags had bases in them. He slid the nail up his sleeve as he did that. Then, no matter how much mixing up and slapping of the bags he and Lin did, he would always slap a bag without the nail. When the last bad remained, Darren reached his hand into that last bag. He inserted the nail into the base as he pulled the base out.
Catchy idea, but I don't believe it. Look at how his finger covers his right hand in 1:43, filmed from exactly the right angle to block the supposed hole left by the screw. Like a true mentalist, even the camera angles are designed to draw your attention away from the point of focus. The camera never zoomed in the for viewers on the scar, either.
I noticed it when there were only 3 left, he's about to touch it but as he feels the "timing" is wrong, he pulls out and starts again. That's when I put my money on bag #3 to have the nail...
Because I roughly knew the trick beforehand as have seen similiar stuff, I closely followed the shuffled bags. Can confirm it was the original one he put the nail in.
Ra Ra no bc he had both of his palms open while doing this trick also I’ve seen him do it live as well as watched other clips of him doing it and confirm that he does put the nail in the nail
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Look at the bags. And look and see each are identical to the other. This trick has been performed by many magicians over the decades and some have got it wrong, as said by Derren and ended up injured. The bags were all mixed up by both men. Derren is not relying on if he knows which bag it is. He is relying on the manipulation he has been doing with Lin to get the result.
He takes the nail out of the base when putting the block in the bag then slips the nail back in when removing it from the bag at the end - there's even an unessicary edit there..
@@thewiseturtle Well I'm not sure but he's got two shots at the 'third' bag surviving because he can count from either the left or the right and call either one of the center bags the third - and they're the last two bags standing. Maybe he hovers over those bags only early in his hand moving because he knows people aren't generally going to tap him right after he starts the hand moving.
he either fudges method when he can or he's transparent when he can. flipping the base to remove it through the bottom is too time consuming, too...simple. making it gimmicked on some sort of hinge so it can be turned flat as he puts it in the bag would be too mechanically complex. if i were to do it, there'd be a few things to it - tapping on the bags as he starts would indicate just the right amount of "give" between "nailed" and "non-nailed" bags. this is how he finds which one has the nail. another, he's putting his hands above each bag such that he has two choices when given a tap. even though we put the trust in the audience of deciding when, there's still control over which. after that, there's two possibilities with the newspaper - a) it was the only number, and he relied on probability for it. if they didn't chance upon three, derren wouldn't have brought it up. b) he put different numbers on different pages, and was prepared to wax religious on each of them. all in all, it's personally more risk than i'd wanna use lol. he's a top notch dude, so i def wanna go to his show so i can see it all live.
Sry to disappoint you, he does not take the nail out. The nail is not gimmicked, it is a solid regular nail. I suggest you to go see it live 😉 I will admit that Derren is crazy for performing this, because if his timing is wrong, he could lose the hand tho

BRILLIANT
As soon as he said ‘could you have ld that for me I’m going to need my hands free’ I knew some crazy shite was about to go down with that newspaper
A Derren brown rap! whaaaaatt?
I've now lived!
im @ 3:50 (I haven't watched the end yet, havent seen the reveal, this is just my prediction)
I think the bag 4th from the left or 3rd to last bag has the nail. lets see if im right
im wrong
As derren put it in the bag, surely must be a subtle way of folding it or making some sort of indicator on the bag.
Never thought I'll see jelly donut aka Andrew and Derren Brown in the same video.
zab666 Jelly Donut?! That’s a serious throwback right there to the freestyle era.
Awesome

Hahahshahahah dammm he naild it !
pun intended? haha
@@alicejones9360 i think it was a mistack with derren you cant know for sure...
OMG this is just genius
At least this time they all got to keep their shoes and socks on!
The timing of the sentences he speaks gives the subtle signals for when the shoulder taps should be.
@@stevenbrown3683 holy crap, you're spot on
@@stevenbrown3683 and then to add to that, I think he had a an ad for all six of the bags in that newspaper - and just pointed them to the right one for the moment. He probably had a bit of patter rehearsed for every number too. (e.g. If it was 1, he might say how the pastor talked about there being 1 God etc...)
even though i’ve seen this before i still get anxious
Atleast they all got to keep their shies and socks on this time
wow freakin wow.... Derren conquers US
That's... scary
The new magical duo, second only to Penn & Teller, Lin & Derren!
Great as always, How does it always find its way to that third bag from the left (crowd's left).
My guess is:
All of the bags have the same stuff, the nail and the base, in them.
@@DavidBeaumont Yeah, yeah, I think you're right! Derren just inserted the nail into the base as he reached in to the last bag.
@@RoseNoho the bag with the nail has a small mark, the others do not.
Hmmm...let me see if we can fit this in during the next trip to the Big Apple...
Was he at the burlesque show at the McKttrick?
Derren Brown praying is surreal. LOL
Darren Brown's work is generally very impressive. This is one on my least favorite bits, though.
So, much more to the presentations that he usually does.
Not to be that bitch, but it's "Derren" not "Darren"😉
I see this comment on every one of his tricks so... Where's his good ones? Haha
ua-cam.com/video/lfdqfXw2Hs0/v-deo.html he dose a simmilar but id say better version of this here. Lin was lucky he got to keep his shoes and socks on!
Poor lin honestly
Explain that, Dawkins 😂
Ahh shit he's doing the bag thing! *rubs palms of hands*
And his volunteer matt had to stomp on them ua-cam.com/video/lfdqfXw2Hs0/v-deo.html
Very simmilar though in this version the volunteer got to keep his shoes and socks on
Well he has the advantage of knowing where the nail is so at least the worst that can happen is he can say no im not doing that one
He turned around when Lin mixed up the bags
If Lin stopped at bag 3, Derren would grab Lin's hand over 3. And slap it on the 4th bag. It's a known trick.
@@RoseNoho oh that's even better! Good call.
"For thou art with me."
Lin: ????? "Who??? Me?????"
Catchy idea, but I don't believe it. Look at how his finger covers his right hand in 1:43, filmed from exactly the right angle to block the supposed hole left by the screw. Like a true mentalist, even the camera angles are designed to draw your attention away from the point of focus. The camera never zoomed in the for viewers on the scar, either.
what the fuuuuuuck
During the first passes over the bags he touches the top of three of them with his palm including bag 3. After that he never touches them again.
I noticed it when there were only 3 left, he's about to touch it but as he feels the "timing" is wrong, he pulls out and starts again. That's when I put my money on bag #3 to have the nail...
There were nails in all of them but they're all folded over
Because I roughly knew the trick beforehand as have seen similiar stuff, I closely followed the shuffled bags. Can confirm it was the original one he put the nail in.
Nope. When he puts the nail in he palms it away and then slips it into the base which is left. Easy.
Ra Ra no bc he had both of his palms open while doing this trick also I’ve seen him do it live as well as watched other clips of him doing it and confirm that he does put the nail in the nail
I didn't know Broadway Genie could rap!
This shows how brilliant Lin is!
Lin being visibly stressed is funny somehow lol

I am sorry...but WHY??!! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?
3:12 Derren touches the bag with the nail to tip off Lin
what the fuuuuuuuu..
It was bag #4. Sheep.
This was all pretty terrible. But at least the magic trick was inexplicably linked with an attack against the church.
Derren is such a good showman.
But to think of it - he wrapped the bag with a nail himself.
Here goes the trick. Poof.
And the newspaper ad?
He's done this live in his shows, so Nope, that's not it dude. The 'secret' is way simpler than that. ;)
Sry to disappoint you, he does not take the nail out. The nail is not gimmicked, it is a solid regular nail. I suggest you to go see it live 😉 I will admit that Derren is crazy for performing this, because if his timing is wrong, he could lose the hand tho
Derren we all love to see your work but we have to say that your head isn't the right shape for being bald so please either wear a hat or grow back as much hair as you can lol. 🎱
