    Hello guys. My name is Syed Muhammad Waqas and welcome to my channel MEP Engineering tutorials. On this channel you will find alot of tutorials related to MEP Specifically HVAC field
    In this video I am gonna explain you guys how to perform hydraulic calculations in your central chilled water project system to select primary & secondary chilled water pumps. I am gonna take example of one central chilled water project and explain all the calculations using excel sheet in detail to select primary and secondary chilled water pump. Let me explain what is pump head. The pump head or discharge head of a water pump is a measure of the power of a pump. Pump head is measured in meters (or feet)

    Hello there! i have t questions, the material is still available? and the other one is how do you put into account in the calculations a elevation of the pipe, i mean if you have a section of 30 m in height, just add it as mH2O? and just + with the already head calculated? if you need to guarantee a specific pressure at the end of the line for an equipment, for example 3.5 bar, just + the same 3.5 bar as head loss?

    Hi waqas continuously watching your videos it is very informative. Please note that in above calculation from A to I pipe size not constant because chiller discharge header size is 16" and pump suction size 8" and discharge 6". Thank you

    • @MEPEngineeringTutorials
      @MEPEngineeringTutorials  3 роки тому +1

      I never mentioned in the video about supply header and discharge header size. It could be 16", 14", 12" or whatever depends on total gpm calculated. And obviously pump suction and discharge sizes would be different again depending on gpm and head calculation. Main purpose here is to show the procedure of pump head calculation. And then you have to follow the actual drawing routing for head calculation where you have straight pipes, bends, fittings, headers, special equipments.

      Yes we do need to add coil pressure drop losses across each water side component and for return line you have to do calculation for primary pump

      @@MEPEngineeringTutorials hey thanks for your reply. imagine that instead of chiller it is a chill water buffer tank, it gets water to the buffer tank and it goes back to the tank in return line, in this case do we account pressure drop from water tank to coil only or add the return line too? there is another pump that also takes from buffer tank to the PHE and return to water tank too

    So the Primary pump should overcome pressure losses of the chiller loop only: from the suction point, through the chillers, to the suction point of the secondary pump. So it will have always less Head than the secondary pump that should handle the pressure losses throughout all the distribution loop ??

    • @MEPEngineeringTutorials
      @MEPEngineeringTutorials  5 років тому

      Basically primary pump is taking water from buildings and push to chiller and secondary pump is taking water from chiller and push to buildings (supply to AHU's FCU's & other water side components). So primary pump will have to overcome all losses that are coming (from return side of water side components like FCU & AHU) to chiller suction point. And secondary pump will have to overcome all losses that are coming from discharge side of chiller to supply side of water side components.

      @@MEPEngineeringTutorials Primary pumps need only provide enough head to move chilled water through the chiller and the piping pressure drops between the chiller and the secondary pumps. Heads in the range of 25 to 75 ft are common. Check this PDF page 52. Q. 1- Why did you not count fittings of all secondary pumps in A-I section but only considered only for single pump ?
    Q-2: You calculated HP of secondary pump which is 2.71. So this HP=2.71 of secondary pump is for each secondary pump?
    Q-3 There is 3-Chillers in drawing but you have selected single chiller. Common header of each chiller have large gpm and large size 16" dia. Why this is not considered over here?
    Plz somebody clear all three doubts?

    Dear Sir, i have doubt that some of the other chilled water pump tutorials, for primary pumps they are taking only the suction header to chiller, and for secondary, they are taking whole pipe length in the building, instead of in your calculation{ for primary you are taking all the supply line from building to chiller and for secondary from chiller to all unit}..which methode is more fesible?

    • @MEPEngineeringTutorials
      @MEPEngineeringTutorials  4 роки тому +2

      For primary CHW pump head calculation you have to consider all the piping (of fcu, Ahu and other water side equipment) running from buildings to your chiller and for secondary CHW pump head calculation you have to consider all the piping (of fcu, Ahu and other water side equipment) from chiller to buildings. This is the correct method to determine CHW pump head.
