    History:
Lynnewood Hall, an impressive neoclassical mansion located in Philadelphia, was built from 1897 to 1900 for businessman Peter A.B. Widener. This extravagant estate, often referred to as "the last American Versailles," served as a symbol of opulence during the Gilded Age. It boasted luxurious interiors, a remarkable art collection, and hosted elaborate social gatherings. The mansion's construction cost was $8 million in 1900, equivalent to approximately $256 million today when adjusted for inflation. Among its notable features, the mansion's ballroom had a capacity of 1,000 people. The mega-mansion covered 70,000 square feet and included 55 bedrooms, 20 bathrooms, a magnificent great hall with a grand staircase, an indoor pool, an art gallery, and a 1,000-person ballroom.
The history of this grand residence is marked by tragedy, as it is associated with the Titanic disaster. Despite being a 20% investor in the Titanic, Peter Widener, who was approximately 78 years old at the time, chose not to board the ill-fated ship in 1912. Instead, he decided to bring his family back to their $8 million Elkins Park home in style. Unfortunately, only his daughter-in-law survived the journey, as George and Harry perished at sea. casting a shadow over the family and the estate.
The Titanic sank in 1912, and Peter Widener passed away three years later in 1915. He left the opulent mansion, known for its gilded gold doors, to his youngest son Joseph, who also passed away in the house in 1943. In 1952, a radio broadcaster named Reverend Carl McIntire, known for his anti-Communist stance, converted the mansion into a religious school named "Faith Theological Seminary." Financial troubles eventually led to the foreclosure of the property in 1992. During McIntire's tenure, many of the mansion's exquisite furnishings and historic elements were sold off, and damaged areas of the building were sealed off rather than being repaired.
Ownership of Lynnewood Hall was transferred to the First Korean Church of New York in 1996, and this transfer was recorded with a sale price of $0. Over time, the mansion fell into disrepair and was ultimately abandoned, resulting in its current deteriorated condition. Recent efforts have been undertaken to preserve and restore this historic property, with plans to transform it into a public cultural space and museum.

Steve did you know that the property was purchases in June 2023? On February 8, 2023, a purchase agreement was announced for the property by the foundation, with plans for the restored gardens to be open to the public as a park, and to fully restore the hall.[1] On June 27, 2023, the mansion's sale was completed for $9 million, and ownership passed to the nonprofit Lynnewood Hall Preservation Foundation.

I've seen my share of abandoned Mansions, but this is by far the "ONE" that outshines them all. I would love to see and explore this place in person. Thanks for the share, Steve! And as always, be safe and happy in your explorations and journeys!🙂🙂🙂

Hey Steve! 🥰 Those symbols/decorative elements you asked about are called a "Cartouche". The blank oval is a symbolical place holder for future family portraits or insignia. The faces on the ceiling are called "Mascaron" - they have a pretty ancient history. I wish you all a happy new year!

Steve, I'm SOOO glad you got to explore Lynnewood Hall. I've been fascinated by this place for a long time, and was excited to see your take on it. This is a gilded age gem. You won't see many mansions like this outside of Europe, that's for sure! I really hope that while you were in the area, you got to visit Lynnewood's abandoned neighbor "Elstowe Manor", which was also built by Horace Trumbauer. What opulence these places boasted! I'm not quite sure which one was more beautiful, but I can say for sure, Lynnewood Hall is one of those places you would never forget! A true treasure. This mansion is one of America's greatest historical gems, and deserves to be shared with the world. Thanks for recording this beauty for all to see, Steve! A fantastic video, as usual! 👍 🙏 ❤

On the upside, you have great vids and enjoy watching them. Maybe someday Dave (AWE) can join you in an American explore. Just a guess on my part, but that (video machine) in the basement looks like an audio voice recorder (they used them in the 50’s and 60’s. The graph machine (I think) could possibly be a something used for Morris code (telegraph machine) I could be wrong just putting my thoughts out the since you asked. Great vid

it takes a lot of money to keep up with a place this huge. most people couldn't afford the staff alone, much less the upkeep, repairs and taxes. when the "fortune" that built this place started to dwindle, she lady just couldn't afford to keep it anymore. it's so sad to see this happen to such masterpieces!! brothers of decay give a thorough tour and history of this beauty on their platform. i highly recommend.

You should really look at a book of architecture. Such as Architecture of the Gilded age. Check out the age and then architecture of the place you’re exploring. This was used as a seminary. The house is in the neoclassical revival style. The carved faces generally (mascarons) were a warning that someone is always listening. The ceilings are called coffered. The Cartouche they are generally left as just an architectural detail, but can be used for heraldic frames or other forms of monument, like dates, or family motto.

Multigraph machines are essentially old school copiers, there would've been a handle to crank and the plate with the image would be around a round drum, so you crank the handle and it rotates the plate through the ink and then onto the paper. In the 80s when I was in grade school they used mimeograph machines which were the more modern version, I remember hearing the faint "kachunk-kachunk-kachunk" noise flowing through the halls as one of the teachers was making copies for their class.

Lynnewood Hall was built by and owned by the Wideners. There were Wideners on the Titanic who perished during the sinking, however they did not own the Titanic.

Hey Steve, love the content, love the whole mansion and would have loved to see that pool but they might have covered it up or taken it out at one point or another as it might have been for insurance purposes.

I grew up about 5 miles from there. Lots of Korean people there now.

What a tragedy , to let such an iconic building, fall in to such a state. It is so beautiful, so sad.
