    Yes, the roughly 2/3 Protestant and 1/3 Catholic figure is correct for 1981 (this film's original airdate). If you find that surprising, there are 4 points to bare in mind.
    (1) The entire point for drawing a line around those specific 6 counties was to create a Northern Ireland state with a permanent Protestant majority.
    (2) In addition to being the original airdate, 1981 was also a census taking year for NI (results to be published in 1982). It lists the total NI population in 81' as 1.5 million, of which 414,532 self-identified as Roman Catholic. If under the lable 'Protestant' you add up the members of all non-Catholic Christian religions in 1981 (including the then 340,000 strong Church of Ireland, which was not under the dominion of popes but did maintain many Catholic traditions) then you arrive at a number approaching 800,000 which actually puts the 1981 religious demographics closer to 1/4 Catholic and 3/4 Protestant. However ...
    (3) In 1981 the IRA, and to an extent Sinn Fein, publicly promoted a policy of non-compliance with the state sponsored census. This culminated in the April, 1981 Derry murder of Joanne Mathers, a 29 year old Protestant census taker who was shot through the neck, on the job. Some have theorized Mathers was a female for female revenge killing for the attempted murder of Bernadette Devlin (a leading Republican voice who'd been shot several times in her Co. Tyrone home by Unionist paramilitaries three months prior), but either way the killing of a census taker very dramatically underscored the Republican policy of census non-compliance. As a result, 274,584 are listed in that census as 'Not Stated' and it is (correctly) assumed they were overwhelmingly Catholic. Add them back in (as the makers of this film clearly did), and you get a 1981 NI that is roughly 1/3 Catholic and 2/3 Protestant.
    (4) As of 2022, Protestants are no longer the majority in Northern Ireland. It is now 45% Catholic, 43% Protestant, and 12% Other (Jewish, Hindu, Unaffiliated, Agnostic, etc).

    That was so educational. I learn something every time I watch one of these videos, thank you ATL your content is always First class. About the Prison camps they mentioned near the end, one of them was Frongoch internment camp in Wales. There is a Marker stone on the former site with a plate that is written in Irish, English and Welsh, Micheal Collins was interned there. It was actually Two camps in one, the north camp and the south camp which was once a Whisky distillery. I believe there was another camp near Winsford in Cheshire but I can`t find any information about it.

      Yes. The song was written about the troubles. Declan (aka Elvis) is from an Irish family and would no doubt be familiar with some Irish history. Costello is a stage name but is a common name in Ireland (pronounced differently to sound more exotic, a bit like the Stephen Colbert).

    🇮🇪💓🇮🇪💓🇮🇪💓🇮🇪💓🇮🇪 Ireland needs to be reunited as one country,,, there is no reason why the people in the North and South cannot come together as one country,,, many countries like Australia they like the royal family and wave the British flag but Australia is one country the same as the Commonwealth countries, they wave the British flag there too,, but they are all individual countries England has no influence., Ireland should be the same,, Ireland is one large piece of rock in the Irish sea not two large pieces of rock in the Irish sea which makes it one country,,, the time will soon come for both sides the North and the South to remove the barriers that divide you apart and bring you together as one county....... For the love ❤ of Ireland.......,, PS.. Ireland joining NATO would be a mistake until Ireland is reunited as one country first, 🇮🇪💓🇮🇪💓🇮🇪💓🇮🇪💓🇮🇪💓

    Obviously way back in Cromwell times laws were very different and barbaric from more modern times so when murder like that time became against the law along with everything else they did to the Irish people and when life and laws became more civilised why then wasn’t Ireland returned back to its own ? I understand that by then Protestants were part of the north but history tells us land was basically stolen from the catholics and should be given back to its rightful owners wether the Protestant people like it or not it was never rightfully or even morally there’s but they could live on there as it was a different time and they shouldn’t suffer for what their ancestors did but the island IS Ireland and shouldn’t be a part of Britain but they can still claim British citizenship as that’s what they were brought up with but there still in Ireland

    • @ATLmodK
      @ATLmodK 11 місяців тому

      In Cromwell’s time he was carrying out a military campaign so his behavior toward the Irish would have been seen as strategic in protecting the colony belonging to Britain. I am descended from one of his exiles and even now we know how incredibly fortunate our ancestor was to have survived the siege of Drogheda.
