  • As we happily celebrate the high-spirited festival of Navaratri, I would like to take you to Mamallapuram caves and talk about a truly breathtaking and intricate sculpture of the story behind Navaratri. This sculpture inside the Mahishasuramardini mandapa depicts the battle conflict between demon Mahisha and Goddess Durga. Carved as a bas relief structure, it is a visually rich representation of how domination and defeat look on the battlefield. With Goddess Durga’s army displaying a confident body language imminent of victory, the demon’s army is ready to flee, losing all its might.
With detailed embellishments showing soldiers, dwarfs and even a strong well built woman who is part of Goddess Durga’s army, the sculptor provides a vivid imagination of the ferocious battle. The puranic story carved as a sculpture demonstrates the true triumph of good over maliciousness, strength over weakness, true spirit over the egoic mind and in all aspects.
In the video, I also take you to see two more sculptures, another one showing Goddess Durga in a victorious posture after the war, and another sculpture of Lord Mahavishnu’s creation of the Universe with the intervention of Goddess Yoga Nidra.
Do watch till the end of the video to know about 3 important sculptures located close to each other in Mamallapuram.
