It’s a way signal boxes communicate to each other to signal trains. Each type of train is identified by a different bell code. E.G an express passenger would be sent as 4 bells, whereas a light engine would be signalled as a 2-3. We use a version of absolute block signalling that’s used on the Mainline.

Nice railway layout.loads of detail.
The constant bells would drive me mental but the layouts nice.
You get use to it. When operating its easy to concentrate on your own block bells being close by and by picking up the different sounds of each one.
At least one SPAD. I wouldn’t like to be on a train through some of the crossovers at those sort of speeds.
