    Appreciate your effort, there're no words for those scammer seller. I've many PS4 for spares, the only scam I got was the first one (the only one from ebay...)

      I've gotten scammed plenty of times. I've bought and sold over 500 consoles so it's bound to happen. Considering not doing PS4 Slims anymore. The PS4 Phat is so much more repairable. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      @@ToltecMerc I agree, the 1xxx, 11xx and 12xx series are really more repairable

    It was Very interesting. Scammers are everywhere! Surprised your test power supply was bad. Died in one of the consoles you were working on? Great Repair, and Education! Thank you. 😀

    Didn’t expect that kind of ending. So bad. Maybe one day it will be possible… (but it still isn’t for so many consoles.)

      We really need to find an aftermarket replacement for these South Bridges. Not likely though.

    I have all the same equipment as you, perhaps more, and still haven't done ball grid replacement successfully. lol Don't know if I have the nerves for it. What size solder balls are typical? When you do you re-balling, manually like in this video, do you have to turn the airflow way down? All the way down? I get sick of blowing parts all over - lol and then balls.

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  2 роки тому +1

      I use .45mm balls for the South Bridge. Turn down the air speed to maybe half of full and start with the nozzle 3-4 inches away. Move closer very slowly while watching. The trick is to use just the right amount of flux. Just enough. Too much flux and it creates a river as soon as you start heating. Start with a very thin layer. You can add more after the balls begin to stick. You just have to try and fail and try again. I'm still learning. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @marcianzero_yt
      @marcianzero_yt 2 роки тому

      So the Little flux is very important. Put it on an like wipe it off with a fingertip to leave very thin layer. Then apply the balls. After I had failed for the second try I let the chip alone a couple of days putting the balls on. Then I came back and started with the hot air put down to 1L of airflow (lowest setting on quick 861). I am sure that it is a bad approach, but it worked for me. When I do it again, I will try to improve…

      @@ToltecMerc You're welcome, and thank you. I love watching people with the skills, and/or, the confidence to replace those ball grid chips. I do not work on PS4, or consumer products, but I sure enjoy watching people repair what for most would not be repairable.
      For my business, I have been sending PCBs and new BGA parts to MiniMicro Stencil, in southern California. The do excellent work, charge only $75, but add about $50 shipping round trip and two weeks down time. I need to learn to replace those PowerPC/Risc chips. They are a little smaller than the Southbridge chip you replaced. As for re-balling, I have watched other people use stencils, but they look like more of a pain than they are worth.

    • @Daveyk021
      @Daveyk021 2 роки тому

      @@ToltecMerc P.S. - if I am re-balling, I will not worry about keeping the balls lead-free. In fact that board house I mentioned asked if it was okay to use leaded balls telling me the results are often better. I will order leaded balls.

  • @Sonic2903
    @Sonic2903 Рік тому +1

    I was wondering... Can you reball on the motherboard, and not on the ship itself? I mean, in order to put an unreballed southbridge?

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  Рік тому +1

      I have done that with smaller BGA chips but not with chips the size of the SouthBridge. In theory though, yes it should work to place the balls on the PCB. You would need to be sure that the solder mask was perfect to prevent the balls from getting distorted.

    Hi I have a ps4 slim which had a 2 second blue light then off. On inspection found, a blown hdmi ic mn864729 (there is a hole on top) and some caps beside it were shorting. I removed the hdmi ic, now all shorts near it are gone, i tried to turn on the console but still it has 2 second on then off.
    I checked other areas for capacitor, the 4 pin psu connector, the 12v connector but no shorts.
    What i would like to know is, does the ps4 need hdmi ic to turn on? I was hoping to get a white light and then order hdmi ic because it is international shipping and expensive to my country. And no, no "professional console repair shops near me".
    Thanks in advance 😀

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  Рік тому +1

      Yes. A PS4 slim should boot to a white light without the MN864729.

      I don't recall where I got this item. It would have been eBay or AliExpress. Many sellers on AliExpress sell the part but you must be patient to receive the item. I use eBay if I just need one piece and I'm in a hurry. AliExpress when I need several and can wait.
