This season has been a shocker for umpires, inconsistent the whole season.

The holding the ball rule needs some serious clarification, players, coaches and fans have no idea which way any decision is going to go, dissent should be decided by the MRP or tribunal, losing a game because a player expressed his emotions on the field should never happen.
100% dissent should be a fine but not affect the game itself
the only thing the dissent rule does is make the umpire calling it look like a dibby dobber kid from kinder
I think the deliberate out of bounds rule is broken
Holding the ball could be so simple I mean count to 2 and if the possession player is tackled after 2 seconds then it's holding the ball no matter what.
Same thing goes for dropping the ball the player has 2 seconds to dispose of the ball if they drop the ball or its knocked out of their hands after 2 seconds it's dropping the ball.
No ands, ifs or buts.
And the dissent rule should not exist at all it should be scrapped completely.

Selwood and Hawkins get everything given their way but literally never get anything called against them. Selwood ducks and Hawkins dives but hey let’s just make an example of Ginnivan because he was open about it. Selwood literally has the world record for free kicks for literally the same action that Ginnivan gets nothing for 🤷♂️🤷♂️

2:47 correct decision, Ginnivan dove onto the ball and failed to get it out
3:14 correct decision again, massive dive
4:51 correct decision, wasn't close enough to the contest to take the player out

I agree, players should be allowed to show emotion. If it is vulgar then go for it but if a players is frustrated and show emotion the umps will see it as insult to them. We watch footy for the players not for the umpires.

How is the duncan one at 2:26 supposed to be holding the ball. He juggled the ball the whole time and never had enough control of it to get rid of it and was tackled immediately.

You've missed the two biggest howlers of not only 2022 but possibly ever.
Darcy Moore featured in both.
The ridiculous contact below the knees against Hawthorn when he was first to the ball, a hawks player fell on top of him and they got the free in the square.
Second one the deliberate rushed behind in the wet against the GWS, even though he touched the ball inside the goal square.
Edit: we can add the preliminary final "no call" to the list.
Deliberate rushed behind was the right call. Contact below the knees was the wrong call and imo was the biggest howler of the year

Hawkins has been allowed to shove people in the back for literally his entire career and the commentators always talk it up as his strength. Like how the Melbourne defensive unit involves May/Lever holding onto their opponents arms while the other tall takes an intercept mark.

@@islandsofgreece1586 Might explain why Geelong are so dominant. GMHBA is still a VFL oval plus the umpires essentially umpiring for Geelong. Selwood used to get away with a lot and Hawkins gets away with a lot.

@@ryankingsbury779 Mate, Kardinia Park was used during the VFL era. There’s a reason why ovals like Waverley Park and Whitten Oval aren’t used for the AFL. GMHBA is the same, but apparently chucking in a few lights and grandstands makes it a “world class stadium.”

The Warner one is an insane double error. He didn't run too far, and his "dissent" (over a howler) wasn't even enough to meet the insanely strict threshold at that time.

I'm a swans fan and I thought that one was fair enough. Why is the rule 15m anyway when players constantly run more than that. They should properly measure how far they actually run and change the rule to that.

The ginnivan one isn't called cause of how he acts for his frees. Was there a push? Probably yeah, but he dived so hard you can't pay it. same with his shrugging the shoulder. It's against the spirits of the game

The first one of Ginnivan here wasn't even a push, it was clearly a flop. The guy barely touched him. In the second one, you can see Ginnivan raise his arm (something Selwood is also known for doing) in order to draw a high tackle. Umpires should never be giving frees to players to play for them.

The Ginnivan ones you've included are really bad selections. They're actually great calls, especially the one at 6:00. You're clearly on that "GiNnIvaN iS UmPiReD DifFeRenTly" bandwagon. The way he plays is a cancer on the game, such a cancer that the AFL (who are so protective of the head) and now paying less high tackles because the spectacle of the game is being ruined by certain players.
The one at 6:00 is an excellent, 10/10 call that most spectators of the game absolutely loved. In keeping with the rules, the umpire correctly deems that Ginnivan lowered his bodyheight for no reason other than to draw high contact, which forfeits his right to a high free kick and forfeits his prior opportunity. Look at how Ginnivan looks at the umpire instantly after the tackle. That's all he cares about.
0:51 the fact that all the players started running st kildas way after the tackle shows everyone on that field knew that was incorrect disposal. Unreal
I fucking love that this happened, I go for freo, and I like st Kilda, but for us to be at the long end of the stick + the 50m with 10 seconds left, it just feels nice for once
actually, the player did kick it. the ball wouldn't of dribbled that way unless he kicked it. besides, the umpire was right in front of it when it happened.

Not Daicos' fault the dude decided to juggle it to the forward 50. He also clearly put his right arm out to fend off the tackle which he was unsuccessful at. Holding the ball any day of the week.

The AFK should've left decisions on the rules of Aussie Rule Football to the NFL who, if you weren't aware used to review the game across the country. Tthe AFL has wrestled control over the years and now dictates as if they own the code. I hate the AFL and their corrupt nature.
Clearly...'Incorrect Disposal' is no longer a thing. If you have possession of the footy and do not dispose by hand or foot correctly... well, that's a free kick. Excuse me...it ised to be. 'Push in the back' no longer a thing. The code is going down hill fast.
Need another 8 min vid for shocking umpire decisions, you can use the SYD VS COLL preliminary final for an easy 8 min of shocking calls.
The umpiring is a disgrace sometimes. I think umpires let their "personal" preferences get in the way of the actual rules sometimes.

Richmond get a free kick, ball spills out to Baker and he stops to motion not to take advantage. Umpire ignores common sense and calls play on. Baker who is standing still is tackled. Instead of common sense balling it up the umpire calls holding the ball. Naturally the Richmond players are in disbelief and after one argues the point the umpire gives a 50M penalty against, easy shot on goal.
Commentators have absolutely no backbone I’m sick of them being so PR focused instead of calling out these shit calls

The one right after not deemed holding the ball is right cause he never had full control before the tackle therefore didn’t have possession, right call. Same with Bolton against lions, never had possession, right call.

2 things:
1)THe abuse rule has to be the worst new rule the AFL has ever brought in. Players would look the wrong way and a 50m was paid because the umps were too soft and precious to have any form of disagreement.
2) Ginnivan is the epitome of the boy who cried wolf; he made a name for himself as a ducker and a flopper so now when he deserves a free he is much less likely to get it. That being said, the two you put here are 100% not frees for him, he literally dives when Guthrie touches his back and against NM you can clearly see him drop his knees into the tackle and immediately look to the ump. He has talent, if he just focuses on playing the game he'll be a star, until then he's gonna be hated for being a sook/flop.
I hardly think Umpires are too soft and precious. Its about time people stopped arguing with their decisions. Umpires are people too, they make mistakes. Its time they get consistent respect. I would like to see you umpiring in front of a million people.

I appreciate the umps have a tough gig, with the one eyed fans, the abuse on and off the field, the constant scrutiny, but this video could have been 40 hours long with the clangers I have seen this year.
It seems to me some umpires have a love affair with the Cats which started when Ablett was playing. Some also have a down on Ginnivan.
