TUDUM
Tudum is a traditional musical instrument of Lanjia Saora which they play during festivals and rituals. Tudum is not just a musical instrument for Lanjia Saora but is a symbol of their identity and cultural heritage. The Tudum is vital in Lanjia Saora ceremonies especially during harvest, festivals and rituals.
The process of preparation of Tudum is a ritual in itself. The drumhead is crafted from animal hide which is soaked and stitched on to the frame with leather threads. The process of making Tudum begins by sprinkling salt on the leather to prevent decomposition and is allowed to dry for three four days. Once the leather hardens, it is left overnight under water to soften and wash away the residual salts.
One the final day of preparation of Tudum, the Idaimaran and his associates gather with grains and vegetables for a feast. They use traditional knives like Kakada, Anidevkam, and Shurikan to carefully cut the softened hide into two equal layers which serve as the drumheads which is then stitched to the drum frame using leather threads.
Men exclusively master the art of playing the Tudum learning from elders. The skilled revered players lead the rituals and communicate messages within the community. Preserving these traditions are very crucial for the well being and ecological balance of the region.
