That turned out really nice. I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago. I did mine without screed strips, working around the walls, then filling in between. I struggled, but think it turned out good enough in the end. Working on tiling shower floor now.
What a perfect job. I'm glad you showed the Maipi 4:1 material. already mixed, just add water. I thought you made it by mixing portland and sand 4:1. Thanks again.
Great video. Unrelated question: does a tile with a hairline crack, ALWAYS need replacing? I just discovered a hairline crack, in my newly installed work, that does not extend the full width (l to r) of the tile. Its a white tile and while it cannot be seen, it can be felt. Its on the pony wall where the fixed glass (opposite side of door) will silicone to. I guess while I have learned alot from you and built this new shower, I could take my skills to the next level and remove the tile! if necessary!
Hello Sal! I do not know if it is a good idea to use a good sealer on my slab deck ruber liner system after it is cured. My idea is avoid a permanantly soaked slab during and after the shower is in service. Or is more convenient the membrane glued on top of slab?
Hi Sal, what is the material of your curb underneath the temporary 3/16th Kerdi board? If it is a Kerdi curb did you thinset that down to the wood floor?
Nice work, very informative and easy. Could you potentially use drywall? as the shower will be waterproofed with kerdi anyways and kerdi dose not let through water or vapour and the only purpose of the guide is just to screed the mortar.
Probably not a good idea as it is too soft and the thinset will not stick to it when installing the banding. Just the idea of having Gypsum in a wet area makes me nervous
@@SalDiBlasi yea I was thinking the same thing, Schluter dose allow kerdi over gypsum in a wet area but would that include using it as a guide for a screed?, doesn't really say but I know I won't be using it as such. The though of gypsum in a wet area is probably not a great idea. Even if it is waterproofed.
Love it Sal, gonna try it tomorrow with some GoBoard strips. I noticed you only used a few screws, I was thinking a bead of sealant on the strips then screws, think it'd much difference?
I live on Kauai and access to some supplies is kinda tricky. The wire mesh you put down, I can't find anywhere. Would something like chicken wire work? Thanks for any help.
Brian, I’ve seen the Tile Coach on UA-cam use chicken wire for his lath on some of his beds. I think you’d be just fine to use it as long as it’s galvanized I’m assuming? I got my path from Home Depot. Aloha and good luck!
@@davidherd3739 thanks man! Fortunately days before I started my big project, the local Home depot got a shipment of the 2.5 galv. Mesh back in stock. So it was perfect timing! All turned out perfect!
Sal, Great work as always. when your doing a quote to the customer how do you decide when your going to use Schluter vs Wedi vs Hydroban, Paint on vs membrane, mud pan vs foam tray, ect? I can't image having each system priced out individually?
Easy, I just give a price for a sealed system, which will include any of the foam boards except Wedi, which I don't like to do. I no longer do cement board or two stage drain systems.
For a traditional mud bed with pvc liner and non-bonded flange What are your thoughts on the pre-pitch and pitch sticks from goof proof? I realize pros wouldn’t typically need these but curious on your thoughts for diy? I used them 12 years ago with no issues and getting ready to do another shower and debating them again vs a kerdi or hydroban system.
Hi Sal, I'm having a very very hard time cutting 24 by 24 rectified time diagonally on a 38 inch sigma cutter, any tips?? The cut always runs off at the end of the tile it's driving me nuts
Good job as always Sal. Do you add any additives in the mixes? How long do you usually leave the mud to cure for Waterproofing? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Sal, how many bags of the 4 and 1 did you use for this? I’m about to do a 3x5 shower, how many bags do you think I need? By Mapei’s coverage chart it sounds like I need about 5 or so, and that seems like a lot. My depth will go from 1 inch at the Kerdi drain to 1.75 at the perimeter.
Thank you for this educational video, I want to learn how to use sand and Portland cement to make the pan since I have only used prefab WEDI pans since I am WEDI certified but these pans although convenient are rather expensive.
Love your videos Sal. I learn a lot. Very intimated to do a first time mud job. What's the chances of a first time mud job being successful if a very handy guy follows your directions to the letter? Thanks
King tiler i have a ? I have wetsaw never used a tile cutter before but want to buy a inexpensive one for like maybe 250 no more what tile cutter you recommend for that price. Much appreciated
For that price there isn't much available worth spending your money on, for a little more you can get an Ishii, which is a decent tile cutter, but I would suggest you either by a Rubi or a Montolit Here is a link to my Amazon store, www.amazon.com/shop/saldiblasi all kinds of tools listed there and in particular this Ishii amzn.to/3kdMMgi I would not consider buying anything that will not cut a 24" tile.
Sal, Do you have a video that shows what membrane you use on the floor with your system or is it not needed when you use a foam curb. I'm not clear on it. thanks
No. The lath material is stapled to the subfloor through the roofing felt. You could, for extra strength, use wire mesh reinforcement. That would go in about the middle horizontally.
So I hear the base of the drain has to sit lower so that the water that penetrates can drain and not become stagnant why does this system always have the base of the drain sitting so high ?
Sal you have no idea how much you've help me along my tile journey owning my own business and getting the best info. Thx a bunch Sal
You are so welcome!

Just needs to be held in place while you work, if the bead of sealant makes you more comfortable, then go for it.

A sealed system is superior to a water in water out shower, but if done correctly the later will last.

Thank you.
You mean the wire lath, at the big box store.
A real professional 👍👌👌👌
Good job as always Sal. Do you add any additives in the mixes? How long do you usually leave the mud to cure for Waterproofing? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Sheet membrane can go on the next day, liquid applied usually at least 3 days.
Do you think any flat plastic can be used for the ledger board? Thinking of just using some pvc baseboard molding.
As long as it is straight and rigid, yes.
Figure you will get about 1/2 cubic foot per bag. so 36x60x1.75=3780
3780/1728=2.1875 4 bags should do it.
Did you pre slope this before the tar paper and lathe? Do you always need the tar paper and lathe, or only over wood? Thanks!
This is a sealed system, the base I am installing is the only one needed.
Good morning great work

Hey Sal, can you do the same thing with strips of durock if that's the material you're using?
no, this was all foam board.

Keep drain hight at 1 1/4 inch

For a traditional shower system, or a sealed Schluter type system?
@@SalDiBlasi hey sal I want your advice on something can you reach out to me please?
What waterproofing did you use
Thanks sal, what are your dimensions for the shower pan sal ,and do you stick to a standard size, or base it on full tile without cutting. Thanks sal.
Showers are never a standard size and it is usually framed out before any tile is ever picked.
Thanks for reply sal, what do you keep them measurement wise ,from back wall to kerb? Thanks, Paul.
Thanks for sharing Sal. What is the recommended minimum mud thickness at the drain flange?
1" 1/2
Hey Sal hope your good How long does it take you to pour a 3x5 shower pan?
Start to finish, mixing, tar paper, wire lath, installing the drain. Maybe a couple of hours.
Do you need to pull them mesh up into the mortar?
No. The lath material is stapled to the subfloor through the roofing felt. You could, for extra strength, use wire mesh reinforcement. That would go in about the middle horizontally.
Where can I find that’s mixing paddle
www.contractorsdirect.com/Bucket-Mortar-Mixer
Keep it up , it helps me a lot 👏
Thank you, I will
Just curious why you choose to use felt and lathe for the base instead of thinset?
That is what you do on a wood subfloor.
So it is wrong to use thinset over wood? Where is the best place to get a handbook and which do you recommend?
@@jcdominguez9243 The wood would absorb the moisture Like a sponge so you have to cover it.
Hi Sal....ever use the Pengleton self riser shower pan?
Not a fan.
When you screw the around the perimeter what happened to the rubber pan
no rubber pan in this shower
There is no rubber panb in this type of system, it is a sealed system.
Why is the wire mesh needed underneath?

thats only when u do a rubber pan liner. this is a sealed system no weep holes to worry about
Kerdi cloth is going over this as a liner I assume?
yes
Kerdi cloth then one more layer of mud?
Should have seen the dry pack the hacks done it was like 10 parts sand half part cement lol
Thought you said don't guess ???
