How Long Can You Leave Bokashi Fermenting?

  • I could never figure out how long it was possible to leave a bokashi bucket before it starts to spoil... I left mine in the kitchen for more than 8 months and it turned out fine and had a sweet smell of fermented food. I was surprised by how little the food changed in appearance. I never did locate the bones I was looking for but I'm sure they were still fully intact somewhere in there... I think the limiting factor is the Bokashi Bran. On the bag I have it says that it expires in about a year. And it would be hard to tell if your bran was actually bad or not. Overall I quite enjoyed the process of saving my food scraps and burying them in the back yard. (might be hard if you live in a city, but do-able) It feels good to keep unnecessary food waste out of the garbage stream. This seems like a good solution for food scraps when the ground is frozen through the winter.

I had a bucket I left outside in my shed and found it about two years later. The top layer had some mold on it, but the rest was fine, although wet as my bucket didn't drain well.

I started my bucket but work got too heavy and I kept getting sick. I didn't manage to fill the bucket all the way (2/3s) and it's been sitting in the garage since July. Trying to steel myself to open the bucket and bury the contents. The plants loved the bokashi liquid in their water.

Leave it in there another year and make plants some tomatoes with it next year see if they grow bigger than other ones

Mine has been sitting there for about 4 months and the tea smells so bad I'm too scared to open the bucket to bury whatever's in there! god the smell.... our neighbours are all so close I'd have to go out in the dark of night to bury it so no one can see who's responsible

There might be something wrong. It should smell like vinegar (bc it's composting) but not garbage stench.

The liquid will stink, but the bokashi itself won't smell gross unless something went wrong. Mine smells like store bought kalmata olives. Lol

How can you tell not it’s not enough bran?

If he didn't add enough bran then he'd be gagging when he smelled it that close.

I probably did'nt put enought bran in mine, and I can tell you, he would not say that it smells pretty good.
I'm sitting here with two rotten buckets, keeping them closed airtight as good as possible. If one have been open for 5 seconds. I can smell it for an half hour around te bucket.
