How To Restore Your Wheels At Home! DIY Porsche 944 Wheel Refinishing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- In this video we take the absolutely tattered Porsche 944 Cookie Cutters and give them much needed refresh. The clear coat on the lip was completely failed, chipping, pitted and downright disgusting. The paint on the faces and barrels was not far off. I stripped them down, polished the metal, gave everything a few fresh layers of paint, and this is what were left with!
I wanted to make this video as a DIY approach and hopefully give you guys some ideas that you can do at home for super cheap. Everything I used in this video is super affordable and available at your local hardware or parts store. Obviously they are not flawless but that wasn't the intention. I hope you all enjoy the video. If you have any questions just let me know. Much love.

I just realised you changed your UA-cam name and you are severely underrated, my professional prediction is that that you will have well over 1 million subscribers, today at around 90k, your chromatically filming and ways of detailing is what I look up to, thanks
Thank you so much Dillan! That’s of course the dream! I can’t imagine the stuff we would be able to do with that kind of leverage. To growth! I appreciate the support man, really really!
What was it prior to this? This channel is very familiar
Fun fact:
Porsche dealerships always put in the hub caps with the pointy end of the Porsche-emblem (the bottom, where it is kind of V-shaped) "looking" to the valve stem. I think it's a nice little detail, but otherwise, great restoration job 👍

In my mid-60s…I’ve owned numerous sports cars. Regarding the wheels, I’ve always lived by the tenet that the simpler the design, the better. When it comes to “what looks good”, I recognize that topic is highly subjective and personal, but much like your 944’s wheels, my 944s2’s D9s are a testament to simplicity, while being complementary to the car’s appearance. . I once owned a Mazda RX-7 convertible, with BBS wheels similar to that red Bimmer wagon’s in your background….keeping them clean was a genuine PITA!!! I just recently finished detailing my Jeep TJs Grizzly wheels…I wish now, that I had one of those ‘Spinna’ things. Your wheels look fantastic, and are a testament to your dedication to attending to the smallest detail….and that sanding the edge of the sandpaper to form to the shape to prevent overspray? Pure genius! Well done, amigo, on this video….we’ll done!
So impressive! Looks so elegant and cool! The way you are telling detailing stories is amazing! Congrats and thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much! My current goal is to get better at the storytelling of these projects. Appreciate you!
The effort you put into these videos and your vehicles is amazing! This makes me want to spend Thanksgiving break restoring my 944 wheels!
If all car-related channels would suddenly disappear and yours would be the only automotive channel remaining, people would be still very happy in a very happy world. Your stuff just gettin’ bettah, congratulations! 🤩
When I started graffiti almost 30 years ago, I used Dupli paints, as there were no Belton, no Molotow or Montana that time. It was nice to see the Dupli cans, this flashback has put a smile on my face. 😊
Nifty trick sanding away the extra masking tape. Great job!
Buddy, ur DIY videos are really getting better.
Keep it going!
Thanks Ruslan! I appreciate that 🖤
The filter on the intro has that *Nightride* vibes, but ah man I ain’t complaining. Love watching these 😆💙
We love nightride fr!! Thank you bron
I’m so glad you kept the original wheels instead of getting new ones 😍😍
The sound of that brushing was kinda ASMR to me, not gonna lie. 😅
Haha did that for you bruh
@@ChromaticGarage I really love your vids, the combination of your detailing and filming/editing skills is pretty unique! And, i don´t know if you remember, but about a year ago i commented under your plastic trim restauration on the E36 that you really inspired me to get the best out of my Coupé as well. And man, you had me falling down a rabbit hole since then! 😅
I´m sort of "done" (i guess you´re never completely done, got a new roof lining laying here already f.e.), ceramic coated the car (also with ArmorShield 😉) and i just can´t stop staring at it. Never would´ve even imagined just how much you still could get out of that boston green! With indirect lighting it literally looks like i polished it into a mirror! 😁
Got a pic of it as my channel background if you wanna take a look, although that´s already a couple month old and looks even crazier now. I gotta get around and make a crappy vid or maybe just a diashow type video of it, but i´m definitely lacking your skills there! 😅
Anyway, just wanted to thank you, like i said, seeing your convertible honestly motivated me to take it this far and i absolutely can´t get enough of looking at it now! 🙏👌
that sanding technique at the curve lines is actually very sick and smart
Center caps point to air Values…it’s a Porsche thing. Great job
Thanks man! I think that’s the same with most brands. Not something I remember when trying to film ahah
Could watch ist the whole day long. Pure art of detailing and cinematography!!!!
I'm not lazy, but watching YOU do this is so DEFINITELY much more therapeutic than when I do it myself! Great work, as usual!
The production on all this content is absolutely amazingly well done.
what an incredible job, I got a little tired just looking at it lol, what an incredible result
Haha thank you bro! Pretty happy with them Forsure 😎🙏
Nice work. Still need to get yourself a workstation at waist height at least, thinking of your knees and back. Trust me from experience on those concrete floors they catch up with you.
was thinking the exact same thing. just watching made my back hurt. workbench for the win. great video tho!
Thank you man! I appreciate the concern
Having worked at a wheel restoration shop, I can tell that you did an amazing job with the tools you had at hand. Great diy tutorial! The wheel roller definitely makes everything a lot more easier for polishing if anyone wants to have a go themselves. And don't skip masking the area that contacts the brake discs because your discs won't be able to transfer heat as well as they should be able to if you paint them.
Thank you Henry! That’s exactly what I was hoping to translate with this video, you can get pretty nice results at home with a little patience. Obviously professional restoration is the goal 🖤. Have an awesome week buddy!
Good work! And a great video. The only thing I noticed is that you didn't have to mask the contact surface for the hub cap, but you did have to mask the contact surfaces for the wheel bolts. The paint can cause the bolts to loosen.
Wake up everyone, Chromatic uploaded :)
Thanks Martin!! Have a great week bro!
That wheel basin you have is super cool. Made for a very sick video. There is probably nothing more stasifying than watching the backside of those spokes having all the brake dust removed. Another epic video my bru. You are truly a rock star.
Thank you bro! Definitely super super fun 🤝🙏
Here comes the legend
Better be talking about yourself Elias!!
Nothing to comment, just purely enjoy your work.
Thank you brother! I appreciate that
Not bad from a distance, 😁👍
Just wanted to say... This is my favorite detail channel on the TUBE!!!! Thanks man! if you read this I have one question... why do you use such a small sanding block to wet sand? is it better than a big sanding block?
Thank you bro!! That means the most! So I prefer the smaller ones because I feel like I have more control. When I use the big ones I find the pressure ends up mostly getting applied in a similar amount of space to the small ones. Just a personal preference though
Wheels look really good. Car is really coming together. Great job as always.
Thank you man! Pretty happy with how they turned out 🙂
Proof positive that when correctly done you can achieve professional results with a rattle can, great video 👍
I must say that your skill level is "Dope!" The way you did those wheels takes a lot of patience and skill! I'm a subscriber and I truly hope you reach a million subscribers because your videos are tight and really well done! Best to ya ....and, remember, go easy on your knees my friend!😉✌🏾
I love a Green n White tennis shoe!
☺️☺️☺️
You’re a jack of all trades. You have so much knowledge. Great job
Thank you bro! That means a lot to me. Much love!
My man, pls do me a favor… my back hurts just watching you crouch over the wheels all the time! I noticed you always work on the floor and I think to myself, “Maybe he likes working on the floor????” Either way you still killing it 🤟🏻
Haha thanks man. I’ll resolve this at some point. I have not yet actively thought about, but I will!
Love seeing Aidan's Spinna being used by people
You're a lucky man to have that 944. I love the body style of the 928/944. My dream garage has one of these Porsche's in it some day.
Me: I think I’ll do this to my wheels.
Me after watching the video: I think I’ll just pay someone to fix my wheels.
Très très bon travail, toujours un régal vos vidéo ❤❤❤.
Le bonjour de Toulouse, France.
Oh man…I want my cookie cutters to look like this. This channel kicks a**
I always love watching your videos. They always have such great shots and creative transitions. Your detailing and car restoration skills are awesome!
As always - KILLING IT!!!
Thanks buddy!!🥺🥺🥺
@@ChromaticGarage Its time for you to make a full on shop/garage video I think. Or am I the only one looking in the background for inspiration? :D
Through your own experience, which would you recommend as more of a 'must have' for maintenance washes on wheels, P&S Break Buster or an iron fallout remover?
Killing it like always my dude, alloys are my favourite part of the car to clean!
Brake Buster for maintenance. Iron removers are too strong for frequent use or if not heavy contamination.
From my experience, I use a dedicated iron/fallout remover to clean my wheels about once a month to help prevent contamination from pitting my wheels. For weekly maintenance washes P&S brake buster works wonders and it foams up nicely when cleaning the tires too. It's also much more affordable than using an iron remover every time you wash your vehicle
Definitely brake buster for maintenance! Iron removers don’t really add cleaning lubrication so while being very effective you need to add a soap regardless to not mare up your surfaces
love your style dude
Thank you bro!
Very nice result and thanks for the video. Very useful. Planning it on my 993 sport classic2 rims
Thanks Federico! Sounds like a plan! I hope they turn out awesome 😎
This is soo wholesome 🔥. I hope to create content like this one day 🙏🏻. You're an inspiration.
Got a customer wanting his '94 5 series wheels polished, so obviously I'm here watching Chromatic videos as homework.
That was an awesome video, great job
Thank you Mike! Hope all is well 🤝
Killer job. Polishing the lip around the center cap is an interesting idea I haven’t seen.
superb realization, I like how you filmed :-)
however a small point to say, it would have been necessary to pass a coumpound and a finishing at the end after the painting, especially with the spray paints, you will have had an ultra shiny finishing job.
you can still do it, with a nano polisher
Thanks man! These are satin though so that’s just not even in the realm of possibility
beautiful. Almost to 1Million Subs!
Thanks Erik! Getting there aren’t we 😳🖤🖤
Fantatstic cinematic intro my guy! And what a great result on the old wheels!
A few days late to the party... But damn... Brilliant my Bru... This is motivation BEYOND for me!
Definite worth waiting for your videos on UA-cam. There are few detailing channels that I follow for tips and trends but I have learned more about restoration from you than any others. Well done and keep up the good work. What’s the next car for the garage when the Porsche is gone? Thanks again for sharing and hi from 🇬🇧
Absolutely fantastic work sir. Great video.
Ooooo 🤤 Porsche cookie cutters are such a sexy wheel 🤌🏼 uncle and I refinished and triple chromed a set for his insane bagged split window bug a while back. That 944 is gorgeous man 🤤 been wanting to build one eventually. Daily a 944, with a nice little 964 Ruf weekend/fun mode piece 😍
Feel like I’ve had withdrawals not being able to stay caught up and watch the new videos 😂 I’m stoked to finally back ✊🏼😎
Main reason was SEMA prep and then getting back in the groove after. I forget every year how absolutely fucking exhausting SEMA is 🤦🏻♂️ but so incredibly worth it haha Finally got my RF’s finished up that I’ve been slowly building for way too long, BUT just like SEMA, the wheel build and process has been super worth it as well👀 not sure if you’ll see it, but I may have to DM a pic on IG that you’ll possibly come across one day 😂 I’m just way too proud of them, like a new dad with his first born son
Damn, worked those babies over didn’t you! 😁👍🏻
Oh dang, he got that new Canon Cardboard-1!
Love the masking and trimming hack! Will be using it when i restore rocker covers hah! 😂
Haha brilliant! Thank you bro!
Fantastic job !
Nice work there sir...
Thank you friend!
Beautiful work
Thanks Mike!🖤🙏
Why the beat around 15:40 make me feel like its about to cut away and start showing Matthew Broderick running and hopping fences to make it back home in time before he gets caught in “Ferris Buellers Day Off” 😂🤣
hey dude, awesome work once again, enjoyed every single bit of the video! would u mind sharing how to deal with drops of paint when we sometimes spray a bit too much paint on some areas.. sand down when its dry and respray? and how to avoid it as well :)
Yay! Pretty wheels!
We love that don’t we!
That poor foamer 😂 amazing job as always 😂
Oh my god I can’t stop laughing about the foamer…doesn’t work…garbage can 😂🔥🔥🔥🔥😂😂😂
I much needed video brother, this world is crazy now💀🤣
shouldve gone the extra mile and cut and polished the finished paint a lot of texture there
monster work !
Thank you bro!🖤
I hope you waited for the clear coat to cure before ceramic coating, dont want to ruin the mad effort upto that point!
The fact that we have chemicals that are able to strip paint like that is equal parts amazing and scary to me
Very scary man! One spaztastic movement away from it being on your skin or one of the cars. Terrifying
Hey bro, always enjoys your videos. 👍
Love some Budos Band!
Can you please list all chems and tools used to do this to my Porsche cookies
Better use 2K paint and the wheel center hole needs paint too, otherwise there will be corrosion again. And wrong tire size ;-) However, nice job!
Thanks Nihil I should have messaged you before doing this! My bad
@@ChromaticGarage No offense, Just a comment
Everyone here had thoughts what is the best ...quality of Your 944 or quality those videos :D
Haha come onnn! Thank you man, that’s really nice 🖤😭
Is there a link for the Spinna stand? Thanks and great video!
nice work
Thanks buddy!
Love the channel and content - absolutely fantastic! Only question I have is why not use a 2K clear spray can like spray max 2k clear? I've used several times over a single stage base coat and it's amazing.
Awesome result mate! Quick question, why did you decide to not clear coat the lips?
Sick video again! music was fire btw!
Thanks Phil! Hope your week is blessed 🙏
could you not of made an attachment to fit over the end of the roller using a drill setup on low speed get consistent job same with the lips
The spray paint did not spray the BMW? or is it to generate content by polishing BMW?
Where was the BMW when I was spraying do you think?
@@ChromaticGarage Sorry, the BMW and Porsche were covered, I didn't pay attention, I was so focused on the wheels that I didn't notice.
Just curious did you do it this way for filming purposes? Because it would have taken a fraction of the prep time with a sandblaster which you can pick up cheap
Awesome video as always!
Where did you get the axle stands or can you recommend some?
Nice BMW wagon !!!!😁😁😁😁😁🚘🚘🚘🚘🏁🍺🍺🍺🍺
Great video as always! :) reminds me that I still have my dirty summer wheels to clean and coat :D
Short question: does the "Spinna" also work that good when you have tires on the wheels? Looking for something for the wheel cleaning and can't dicide between one with a stand on the back and one without... 😅
Edit: Props for using proper PSE. Really appreciate that! :)
video is spot on, and Ive got a similar 944 that I restored the cookies on too, but sadly I've left the car to the elements outdoors for almost two years now and I think all the work I've done on the lip is gone, I sanded it the same way you did but without stripping, had no idea I had clear coat on the lip tbh. now I found some corrosion on the lip and im kind bummed. what do you suggest I do? planning on putting em back onto the car
Damn thing looks new
Thank you bro! Was pretty pleased with how they turned out
What grit wet sand did you use ? Thank you in advance
Where did you get the ‘Spina’
nicely done!! :)
lets gooooo
🙏🙏🙏🖤🖤🖤
Parabéns ficou show de bola !!
I have done the same 😅
where can i buy "The Spinna"?
RIP IK Foam Sprayer 😔
I’ll clean the filter and tell everyone it’s the best again soon 🤝
perfect s always
Lmao that busted IK foamer. You should go for Marolex foamer next.
What are your thoughts on the IDA? (International Detailers Assoc.)
I genuinely think it is so friggen stupid haha
You would be better using catalyzed paints and primers/clears as in 2k. Much more durable.
Where can I pick up a “spinna”?
