Would love to learn more about coding certifications. I graduated from a Medical Assistant office program in 1994 which included a Medical Coding and Billing section. I billed and coded back in 1995 for a General Surgeon's office. Would you happen to know which direction I would go for getting back into the coding field?

I am currently doing my medical coding program, and I am very sure that I want to work in my local Hospital which is for inpatient coder and it requires the CCS - Certified Coding Specialist. Although I would like get my CPC for another career opportunities do you recommend getting both?
You can technically do that with ant certification, licensure, or registration... Wanna be a doctor? Teach yourself and take the the MCAT. Attorney? Teach yourself a d take the BARR Nursing? Same with NCLEX. It's rare that anyone could realistically do that... but rare is not impossible. 🤷🏼♀️👍❤️✌️

Hello Victoria, I am watching your master class and you mentioned the 3 certifications mostly recognized and well known among employers. You mentioned NHA CBC with National Healthcareer Association. I’m confused because I thought you said NHA isn’t accepted by most employers? 😵💫
The NHA is accepted in some pockets in the US. A lot of programs prepare for the NHA, but you don't have to _take_ that certification, you can just go get your CPC.
@@ContempoCoding thanks for clarifying that. I have already paid for the CBCS exam and there is a no refund policy by NHA. I’ll just finish all the modules online on the study guide and do the practice tests prior to my exam on 11/10/22. I started studying in September, and I have been working the the medical field for 20 + years and doing more billing and coding the last 4 years. I am hopeful I’ll be prepared for the certification exam. Thank you Victoria for your time and leaving that info clear for all of us that follow you.
Hi. I’m changing careers and would like to know if I should make the change to medical coding. I’m in CA. Is it tough to get hired? I am introvert and prefer to work alone.
AAPC Membership is $205 annually. Code books are about $300 annually. The CPC exam fee is $499. And that does not include training which is usually anywhere from $1500-$4000 or the books to self-study are around $100-$150.
@@ContempoCoding thanks for the response. One last question, any special skills to be able to do this? I have an Associate degree in Medical Ultrasound but I never worked as one. It's been a few years since I finished it and I feel like I'm too old to start over again

Most employers won't accept it for coding jobs. Any time you're curious if a certification is being sought by employers, type it into Indeed and see how many job listings come up.
I think the CIRCC offered by the AAPC and is geared towards those who work closely with interventional radiology, cardiovascular surgery, and diagnostics. The certification focuses on a range of topics, from anatomy and medical terminology to coding guidelines specific to interventional radiology. It's an excellent way to further specialize in the field and can open up new job opportunities, loads of recruiters __ have told me that coders with IR coding experience are like gold.

In the context of medical coding, a specific degree in medical or life sciences isn't mandatory, but it can certainly be beneficial. Many coders come from a variety of educational backgrounds and then acquire specialized coding knowledge through certification programs like those offered by AAPC or AHIMA. It's the coding certification and the understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare reimbursement methods that are crucial in this field. If you're considering a career in medical coding, focusing on getting certified is a practical approach, regardless of your initial degree.
