Yes, I literally typed an essay for a video description and had to link it off of UA-cam. Whoops.
And incidentally, I only ever played a Model 2 as a kid, so it's mind-blowing to hear how clear the Model 1 sounds.
U played a VA 2 right? The va4 is better than in the video...
My opinion on each:
Model 1 Non TMSS - Sounds great, very clear and detailed.
Model 2 3/4 motherboard - Sounds a little muffled. Not quite as good as the model one, but without comparing them side by side, it's hard to hear any difference.
Model 2 full motherboard - Sounds like absolute crap. I'm amazed Sega would release such a distorted sounding Genesis, did they really think it was passable?
Sega CDX - Sounds really good. Just as good as the model 1 if not better.
JVC X'EYE - Very impressive. Upon first listen it can seem to sound the best, but after listening again, I'd have to say this still doesn't sound as good as the model one. It's a little too bright, but I guess that's what makes it stand out.
Sega Nomad - Could be better, but considering it's a portable Genesis, I think the sound is good enough.
Genesis 3 - Pretty good for being mono only. If it had stereo output, it would probably sound as good as the Nomad.
Kega Fusion Unfiltered - Damn. That's the cleanest I've ever heard this game sound. It's slightly too bright for my taste, but with some treble adjustment, it could potentially sound better than any Genesis hardware.
Kega Fusion Filtered - Sounds muffled and muddy. Definitely better without 44 kHz filtering.
I like your opinion, Genesis Model 1 sounds better than Model 2
And Unfiltered Fusion 44 KHz is the cleanest
I kinda like the filtered Kega Fusion, it sounds close to a later Model 1 (not the VA7, probably VA6)
I am surprised that the sound of megadrive 2 and not that of nomad is criticized when they really have the same custom chip, the fc1004 among others
The JVC X'eye has the loudest and clearest PSG, and the Model 1 and CDX have the highest sample rate.

Ahhh, nothing beats a good ol' first revision (aka pre- VA-7 motherboard) of a Model 1 unit. So happy that I ended up buying one despite not knowing about the various audio issues of later renditions. Long live the greatness of 16-Bit sound!
Had the model 1 so its the most nostalgic for me.
That JVC output sounds amazing though.

I gotta say non-TMSS "High-Definition Graphics", X'Eye, and unfiltered emulation sound the best. Everything else just sounds muffled, like putting a blanket on top of the speakers.
So I just bought an X'Eye , so I'm comparing it to the model 1 , and yes, the ring chime sounds crisper on the model 1 ....but everything else sounds clearer on the X'Eye ! So frustrating!
There really is no CLEAR winner when it comes to Sega sound hardware, it all sounds so different due to Sega not making up their damn minds. Even now, they switch their official emulation so often. I say just settle on one and go for it. I'm perfectly fine with my first model HDG non-TMSS Model 1 Genesis (yes, there are MANY sub-models of the Genesis, mainly having to do with sound quality and copy protection). Also as a side note, if you are interested in getting a Sega CD sometime, either an X'Eye or a Model 2 CD are the best options imo because they don't need as many repairs and are more user-friendly to repair in the first place. Model 1 Hands down! Do one with streets of rage 2 first stage (I loved to play it with the earphones in the stereo output)
You know what is better than the HDG non TMSS model 1? A HDG non TMSS model 1 with a YM3438 mod.

Personally after owning a model 1 with TMSS with no hdg on I can safely say it practically sounds the same as the model 1 sound here.

As long as it has a RF hook up in the back, you're good to go.
There are different variations. The VA7 Model 1 sounds distinctly different than all the previous variations of the Model 1 -- it sounds like ass with annoying hissing, muffled bass and some notes are off pitch. The VA5/VA6/VA6.8 all sounded mostly fine with perhaps some muddling in the bass but the VA7 is genuinely awful.
No, they aren't. The boards vary widely with the VA7 variant basically being a VA1 Model 2 board in a Model 1 shell (they both sound like ass). The second and third revisions of the Model 2 boards corrected the terrible audio amp circuits.

Model 2 3/4MB has reduced stereo field compared to Model 1Model 2 FMB has horrible distorsion
Sega CDX is...where is the volume ?
JVC has lots of hi's and lacks bass
Nomad is ok
Model 3 lacks dynamics & bass
Kega is horrible !!! lots of highs, bad balance between DAC channel, YM2612, PSG
Kega filtered is more acceptable but again lacks DAC.
Go for model 1 ! Nice stereo, nice bass, nice balance even nice distorsion.
clbna just to be clear DAC stands for "digital to analog converter," the fact that you hear sound at all means that the DAC is functioning properly. In this instance digital refers to the bit code of the audio I.e. 1001001101, and analog is literally the sound waves produced by the speaker's cones.

Model 1 is most preferable in terms of balance. It's not crystal clear like the JVC, but then then JVC is "Too Emulated" sounding. CDX is hard to decide on.. sounds as good as Model 1, but something's missing. Perhaps "Umph", it's just not full.

You are easily able to tell you have a model 3 as it's clearly smaller and says Sega Genesis 3
If your system looks like a big black Dorito then it's a model 3.
For mobile users, also my opinion on each:
0:00 - "High Definition Graphics" Sega Genesis Model 1 - Non-TMSS: Sounds pretty good, sounds like a VA3~VA5 revision (the VA6 introduced the TMSS, so I'm not counting it as this is a Non-TMSS model), clean and detailed sound, a little muffled and lower compared to a VA2 Genesis, but the best overall.
0:50 - Sega Genesis Model 2 - 3/4 Motherboard Variant: Considering it's a later Genesis Model 2, it should have a VA3 or VA4 revision, which are pretty rare, pretty good sound too, but a little bit inferior to a Model 1, but at least they fixed the bad audio from the Full Motherboard Variant.
1:39 - Sega Genesis Model 2 - Full Motherboard Variant: The worst, hissing noises, very muffled and flat, revision is a VA0~VA1.8, immediately mod this with MegaAmp.
2:28 - Sega CDX: Pretty good and accurate, as good as the Model 1, but not better.
3:17 - JVC X'Eye: sounds like a improved Model 2 Full Motherboard at first, but then I realize that the sound is great, just a little too bright.
4:06 - Sega Nomad: Good for a portable, sounds like a Model 2 3/4 Motherboard, but eats a lot of batteries xD.
4:55 - Sega Genesis 3: Good for Mono only sound, but still, not as good as a Model 1.
5:44 - Emulated (Kega Fusion) - Unfiltered 44KHz: now this is very fu**ing clean and great, but, very crisp, this is maybe without SuperHQ option.
6:34 - Emulated (Kega Fusion) - Filtered 44KHz: I wonder if you used it with SuperHQ option or not, but it sounds muffled, but good I guess, sounds close to a Model 1, but a little overfiltered.
Personally, I'd go with the JVC X'Eye for the best overall quality. But I'd be okay with a model 2 Genesis 3/4 motherboard (VA3 or VA4), as well as a model 1 Genesis with 'High Definition Graphics' (VA6, VA6.5, or VA6.8). For budget purposes, I'd go with a Mega Retron HD.
If I were to rank them based on overall quality (no emulation), it would be this:
- S (1/2) JVC X'Eye
- S (2/1) Model 1 Sega Genesis with 'High Definition Graphics'
- A (3/4) Model 2 Sega Genesis, 3/4 motherboard
- A (4/3) Genesis 3
- B- (5) Sega CDX
- C (6) Sega Nomad
- D+ (7) Model 2 Sega Genesis, full motherboard
- D (8) Model 1 Sega Genesis without 'High Definition Graphics'

Idk why people praise the HDG no TMSS. It's a little too loud in some places and certain sounds come out peaked/peaking.
I have a no HDG TMSS Model 1, not the white one that has an identical Model 2 VA7 board, but its one after the HDG model.
I feel like you get the best *Unmodified* sound out of it as it doesn't peak like the previous iteration.
I don't know what you guys are hearing but the 3 Genesis models sound the same to me. Maybe the Gen 2 is a little noisier? Is that all?
I've done mods on model 1s over the past few years and this is the three different models I used personally:
1- "High Definition Graphics", No TMSS
2- "High Definition Graphics", TMSS
3- No "HDG", TMSS
I have to say that they all had very good sound quality and frequency range. Some had specific issues with video quality (like the infamous rainbow banding), but sound wise, they were all pretty much the same as the incredible HDG without TMSS. I also have a full motheboard model 2, and no, you just can't compare any of those with this noisy, compressed, bass-less sounding of a genesis.
You just have to search hard for them, they ARE the first Genesis consoles ever made! I bought mine at a retro game store up in DePere run by a friend of ProJared's (GameTrade if you were wondering the name, they're fantastic), and I love it so much. I actually just got it a Model 2 Sega CD with the semi-rare extension plate, and it looks long, sleek, and fits fantastically along my other black systems (my N64, PS2 slim, and my Wii U).
I think the current iOS and Android Versions *by Christian Whitehead* win even though they're not on the list or candidates.
Those have replaced music though so not really able to compare them to the originals anymore.
LOLDONGS They're "enhanced" on iOS, as in some parts in Marble Zone sounds better than the original
Well yeah it seems that the model 1 sounds slightly clearer then the rest, but at the other hand it maybe my brain to wanne believe to it being better, howabout an blind test? It's also a matter of preference some complain about the noise of the model 1 but getting more satisfied with the less noisy model 2,will other prefer the clearer sound model 1 tather then the slightly muffed model 2,i really don't care that much.

the cdx definitely has stereo in this video, and volume was probably preserved to avoid distorting
The emulator version sounds better imo. It's more clear (you can easily hear all the frequencies) and less muffed than the original.
OPL fm if it's a model 3 it will be called a Genesis 3 on the console

The JVC sounded the best. I couldnt tell the difference between most of them. The model 1 and the model 2 with the 3/4 variant sounded alike and would be my 2nd choice as far as sound quality. I have a model 2 like most other people but don't know how to tell the difference between the full pcb board and the 3/4 variant.
Flip it upside down and look through the vents. If you can see the metal heat shied extends completely across the vents, its a full pcb. If the metal plate only extends about half-way across the vents, it's the 3/4 one.
It's easy, use this guy's tip above or listen to each one's sound, it's a very clear difference.
And then along came the Analogue Mega SG!
What about the Model 1 without the HD Graphics label?
X Eye the best by a big margin for my ears.. I hear a number of details clearly on it that get completely lost on the others.

The filtered version on the emu is basically the best the genesis 1 can do.

The comparison is simply limited to the models I have and, unfortunately, I don't own a TMSS model 1. From what I've heard they sound similar to -- if not exactly like -- the bad "full motherboard" model 2s but I've never actually used one personally.

Way too late reply, but it sounds pretty much the same as this Model 1 from the video as long as it has a High Definition Graphics logo with a EXT port on the back, or a flat space on the back if it's without the High Definition Graphics logo.
