Pete I’m really happy you always take the time to reach out and help people learn, making guides of all levels for all people. If you ever dare to get back on logic, I will be so excited to watch more videos! It’s been a year since I started on IOS garage band, and your videos are the only reason I kept pushing this passion. Now, I think I’m ready to take it to the next level, and get a MacBook with Logic!
Very, very nice and easy to follow. I actually had a couple of questions that you already addressed in your video and now I'm ready to get started. Thank you!!!!!
I've had a bit of an itch to create some sounds lately but was looking for an inexpensive way to play around prior to committing to purchasing software. Thank you for the tutorial.
Thanks for this Pete, it's kinda exciting that you're doing this with BandLab,.I've been needing something to reinvigorate my interest in this, seems like you already know more than I do 🤔😆 Cool stuff !
Hi Pete. I played around with BandLab 2 years ago. I found that it was giving me some sounds that I couldn't get in GB (at least not then) and also gave easier collaboration with band members during Covid-19 lockdown. BUT, the latency was driving me mad. As you are known for being Mr Garageband iOS and you have built your channel (mostly) around GB, here comes the inevitable question: maybe it is too early to ask, but how do you rate BandLab in comparison?
Hey there my friend. So yes - latency is probably the biggest issue I’ve noticed in BandlLab so far. It makes sense as it’s browser based so likely to suffer more than desktop DAWs. The weird thing is that I’ve noticed virtually none when recording but a significant amount afterwards. If they can find a way to fix that and provide an automatic compensation it would be amazing. Maybe it’s there in the settings? I’ll keep playing.
Dear Pete, do you know I you can go with pitch mode on the keyboards on BL as you can use it with GB Glissando, Scroll and Pitch? This function allows me sliding while playing, which is a very important effect in EDM. I just tried to make a beat with BL, but GB seems to be much more intuitive and easier to handle. It was not necessary to watch for a tutorial regarding the basics. But I don’t throw my hope away with BL a little brother as complement for GB to have. Big up your work Pete. You’re the coolest Tutor.😎
@@PeteJohnsMusic hah, that’s a pity. On the other hand they have other cool on board sounds. What would be a good reason to use also BandLab compared to GB?
Hey Pete, thanks for another awesome video! Two questions: 1. I noticed the “upload” button. Is it possible to somehow upload from garageband to th is platform? 2. Do MIDI keyboards work well in this platform?
Hey there. Yes and yes. You can indeed bring in WAV files form other platforms like GarageBand. And yes, MIDI keyboard work really well. A little latency after recording but you can quantise or shift the notes afterwards quite easily.
Hello, please I need your help. I tried to make an Acapella video but I realized that the Acapella app can only be used with iphone. I came across "bandlab" and I decided to record my vocals and harmonies separately then make a video separately like celebrities do for "music videos". Anyway I tested the app in a quiet place but there is this loud buzzing, radio frequency/ ping noise that I keep hearing when I listen back. I don't know what's wrong. I tried deniosing, using autotune, and some FX on the app but nothing worked Please help 🙏🏾 Also I noticed the more tracks I record the louder the noise gets . I'm not really trying to create studio quality, I just wanna record my vocals and harmonies, just Acapella.
Hey there. You’re using some headphone to cut the feedback and noise? That’s my first tip. Otherwise, Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
Good stuff, lets say you have an electric drum kit, I suppose you would use your interface but would you do this in vocals or what? Sorry I'm new to this
Hey there. So you can either use it via MIDI (plug in straight via USB) or you can use an audio track. I would start with a straight clean audio track with no effects. Or a vocal preset with some light reverb.
I hope you don't mind my leaving a question here. I've tried to find a customer service # for BandLab but haven't been successful. Hopefully this will make sense… my daughter is a dancer and there's a word in one of her solos that we needed to change. She figured out how to change it in BandLab (she replaced it with another word cut from the song), and it sounds perfect. But now the file size seems much smaller. Does BandLab decrease the audio quality when you export/save… whatever that process is called. She does perform on a variety of stages with professional sound systems, so I'm worried we made the quality worse and if so.. not sure if there's a fix to that. If you would have time to answer my question I would appreciate it so much! Thank you!
Hi there! So, BandLab should retain audio quality when exporting. Just make sure you export as a WAV file and not a compressed MP3. If you can’t export as a WAV through the app, you might need to use the website version to export at full quality.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you so much for your reply! I will make sure my daughter did it this way. I don't think she had the option to export as a WAV file - this could be the issue! We will try today on the website version, thank you so much! The cut from the choreographer was a 3:45 min song at 5.3MB, but after she shortened it to 2:40 (and also replaced the word), it went to 2.6MB which seemed like a huge loss in quality (though i really know nothing about these things!) We had no clue where the issue could be, so we will definitely try to export as a WAV file today. Thank you again!
Thanks for the vid and band lab looks interesting . I was wondering if it has the ability to record myself live ( guitar) via a mic so I can just add ( with click track ?) drums etc Also and maybe more important is the question of copy write , in other words can my ideas/recordings be 'nicked'?
I love the simplicity of bandlab but I just can’t seem to figure out how to make sure a track is 4 bars.. I zoom in as much as possible and it’ll look like 4 bars but when I loop it, the timings off… I’ve used other daws that jump to the measure lines but bandlab doesn’t have that option.. Please let me know if you have any tips on this!!!!
@@PeteJohnsMusic I haven't personally used it myself but have a few friends who have. All I can remember for sure is that they had latency issues. I have downloaded it in the past hour to try for myself. Latency issues in Garageband were next to non-existent for me.
@@airinbone yes, there's definitely more latency, especially using it in the browser, but thankfully not while playing, just some delay in the recording which you can pretty easily quantize or just manually move back.

Unfortunately BandLab is not DJ friendly if you're trying to record a mix. You can pay for a membership and BandLab still cuts off recordings at the 15-minute mark. I don't understand why they don't give the option to store files locally since they're being very stingy with their cloud storage given you can only record up to 15 minutes. To be honest, that’s probably one of the best features. Just quickly recording a few tracks, as you can then use these on any platform and everything is saved in to the cloud.
