@@RR-lj3ip I mean that happens to the American school system too. We mostly worry about school shootings. Like the time sandy hook took place. A whole first grade was pronounced dead.
People have been sent home or expelled for having some sort of hairstyle or skin color.
But back to the school shootings. We constantly live in fear every day.
Some people take their lives from bullying and stuff like that.
I understand what happened to you is unfair and unacceptable. But at least it wasn’t a complete horror story. Still sorry you went through that.

I'm a fire sprinkler inspector. Most buildings get 1-4 inspections a year. The water is always dark and gnarly when we first start flowing. He's right on the corrosion though; which is why every 5 years the system is drained and probed with a camera to check the internals. But just because the water is dirty does not mean the system won't work.

Can confirm, I did fire sprinklers for several years and this is normal. These systems are life safety and regularly tested and inspected. It doesn’t take long for the water to get pretty gross but as long as the system is structurally sound dirty water will still put out the fire.

Former fire sprinkler installer here. So that’s what we call pipe cancer. It’s practically what they guy explained. It’s actually cause by chemicals/particles in the piping taking it to the building(underground). It becomes contaminated and creates this horrible smelling black water/ maybe sludge. This is normally fixed if it is routinely drained and tested. Obviously this school hasn’t done that/they have a lazy fire control inspector. Happens a lot. The black water would not really cause an issue unless the building was like 50 years old AND the system hadn’t been drained and pumped up in years. Also even if there was sludge, a fire pump experts 200 psi if it senses a fire/ loss of pressure it would rip through that sludge. Not really life threatening unless it’s super old/not drained or maintained properly.

I remember when my school tried to somehow get me in trouble for getting stuck in the elevator. Three times. THREE TIMES that thing broke down with me in it. They claimed that I had, SOMEHOW and for GOD KNOWS what reason, “intentionally broke the elevator.” Pretty sure they didn’t want to admit that the elevators were garbage so they tried to turn me into a scapegoat. That was the moment when I pretty much had it with the administration and became pretty cold and blow off-ish towards them. They didn’t like it, but hey, I didn’t like them so it EVENS OUT.

As a sprinkler fitter, who installs, services and inspects sprinkler systems. Most sprinkler systems have black water and some gunk. The fact the head he broke blew off the way it did shows it was functioning as it was meant too. The black water flowing down the hallway is just part of the program. Sprinkler water isnt flowed nearly as much as domestic water, thus its usually gross from sitting for months to a year between inspections.
Systems generally range from 50 to 150psi operating pressure, many with large pumps that turn on to force hundreds to over 1000 gallons per minute
Into the system. When a head breaks it would take SEVERE blockage to not allow water to flow out of the sprinkler head orface.
Also sprinkler systems have quarterly, annual and 5 year internal inspections and during them the water is flowed through both the main drain and inspector test drains, and even disassembled to check the condition of main lines, branch lines, and the heads themselves. Among many other tests to make sure everything is functioning properly.

      @georgestreisel7920 8 місяців тому +34

Yes, between being mostly ran in dirty black steel pipes unlike pvc or pex plumbing and the infrequency of flow black water is actually the rule not the exception. Also pendant heads (ones facing down) can be off long drops from the main above. This means the water in the drop length of pipe will never really get flushed fully and will be very nasty. Just the way it is.

Speaking from a maintenance experience. Buildings with sprinkler systems get checked and flush out monthly or every three months. I work in a fifth teen building warehouse industrial center. Every building has its own fire sprinkler pump house. Over the past two years we have replaced thousands of feet of sprinkler pipes and every time they get flushed out. This black slush still comes within the first five seconds. There's no way the build up this stuff could stop the pressure flowing water through the sprinklers head. If anything the pressure will just blow the sprinkler's head straight off it does open up and allow the water to pass through. The sprinkler heads have a fail safe mechanism. Just like most vehicles the coolant thermostat does.

Just a detail: Sprinkler systems are not designed to put a fire out. They might do that in some cases but it is not their purpose. What they do is lower the temperature in the room to keep a fire from spreading and allow people to escape. It limits fire damage but potentially introduces water damage. Which is the reason things like server rooms often use a gas based fire suppression system connected to an alarm. Once that sounds, and you are in said room, drop everything and run. Because the room is being flooded with a suffocating gas that leaves an atmosphere unable to sustain fire, but also any nearby meat bags.
Additionally, any place that has a sprinkler / fire suppression system will also have a fire alarm that is connected to the local fire department. So if a sprinkler triggers, it automatically send the cavalry. You cannot avoid that or cancel the call. (one of the very gripes I have with the otherwise awesome „Die Hard“ movie).
They will assess the situation, put out the fire (and make sure it stays out) and also turn off/reset the sprinkler system. Depending on where you are, the sprinkler controls are only accessible to the fire department through a special key that only they have. (The keys are a joke, but that is a topic all on its own. Do not mess with any equipment unless you are explicitly instructed to).
    Little qualifier here:
This is the situation in my area. This does not mean that what I said applies everywhere. I could rattle on about this but I have done so enough already. 😅

I had the opportunity to watch one of my students destroy one of those sprinkler systems with a well-placed soccer ball kick. That black stuff almost always comes out of these piping systems as water is not the only thing in them. They also add a powder retardant to the mix to take fires down quicker, or in case the fire is of oily origins. It was greasy like bentonite, as the kids were soon using the stuff to run and slide.

As a security guard its completely ok to have black water and stuff. The sprinkler was working as intended actually. The water is stagnant in the sprinkler pipes so it doesnt flow like it does in domestic pipes. Usually sprinkler system are checked routinely 4 time a year (depends on places but i work in large businesses, facilities and hospitals)
For pwople doubting, we learn about emergency system and protocols including sprinkler system since its literally our job to understand what type of danger we can face, what we can counter with and how to evacuate people. We also work with firefighters and law enforcement to some degree when they are called to act on site. The sprinkler system are also very often integrated into the security consoles when the place have one.
im in canada i dont know if other country have the same process but here i took a 6 months course at first and did more for special added licenses and other more particular stuff. Tho we have a 2 weeks course available that allows you to be a security guard in smaller contracts like events or very easy positions.

I was locked up for awhile when I was younger. And in this juvenile detention facility, we were locked down because of an incident and this kid threw his bob barkers at the damn sprinkler in his room. It of course went off and dumped 100s of gallons of black nasty rusty water all over him and his room. Hahahahahah we were rolling on the floor looking at this kid and the CO’s trying too get his cell door open💀🙌
Needless too say he was transported out of that facility too another.

This was a thing at my college dorm. They basically were EXTREMELY anal about candles and accidentally tripping the fire system because our dorm was one of the oldest ones on campus and it was all but confirmed as fact that if the sprinklers ever tripped it would ruin everyone’s stuff from the black sludge in the pipes. There was also no way to flush the system or anything, so it wasn’t a matter of if, but a matter of when

Long time Sprinkler Fitter here... hes right about the corrosion.. most of those systems are "dry systems", they hold compressed air untill a sprinkler is broken and a signal is sent, at which time the dry valve opens and floods the system with water sending it to the sprinklers. When its done, it refills with air and any water left sitting in the pipes settle, which is why these systems are supposed to be installed with 1/8th incline to drain water, along with "low point" drains. When installing these systems, all the pipe is cut and threaded, or grooved, on site. Its oily, its dirty, its nasty. These systems are flushed and inspected yearly and the water is *always* black and smelly, its normal. There isnt anything out of the ordinary with that. What IS a problem, is when you open a valve to drain one of these systems and absolutely nothing comes out... that is a sludge build up and ive had to flow systems just to unblock them.
