The Ripe Tomato Farms Hey 👋 I have a question about mulching . Today I raked up some leaves from a bush in my yard, the leaves were yellowish greenish still, not like the ones in fall. I raked them and used them as mulch in a couple places in my garden. Is that ok to do? My husband says it’s not because I’ll create mold and fungus. What do you suggest?
@@FarmLifewithKids Hey, thanks for asking. Usually, this time of year, mold and fungus isn't an issue. Heat, drier weather, and generally less conditions that mold likes is ahead of is. If you cam. mix it with some straw or dry shredded leaves and you'll be ok. Fungus (mycelia) are not the enemy of plants...in fact, quite the opposite. Create a biome in that top layer of soil WITH that mulch, and you'll be surprised at the results!
thank you a lot! i guess i started watching a bit too late coz i already germinated mine but with your advice i hope still can get "set to success" heh. Thanks!
Great videos! I’m getting ready to start my cucumber seeds. Someone suggest I soak the seeds in a cup of warm water overnight before I plant them. I grow my veggies in two large flower pots on my patio. One year I grew tons of cucumbers, but last year they failed. We had a terribly hot summer and I guess the sun was too hot on them. They only got morning sun then in shade in the afternoons. Thanks or the excellent tips! Love your videos!
Awesome videos! Love every one of them. This is my first year growing anything! So you are definitely orienting me greatly. However, I have a question, how do you get the vine to hang on to the string? Do you attach them with something or do they attach themselves? Mine are already pretty grown, but have no clue what to do with the vines. They are starting to go all over the place. I have a forest growing out here. Help!🤦
Thanks so much for the support Marta! Cucumbers are a bit trickier than say Peas because they won't actively climb as much.... So you have to tie them off 3 or 4 times along the stem to really get them established along your vertical line. Best of luck!
Hey tammy, a few reasons. First, space is a premium. 18 of the 4 inch pots take the space of 98 plugs. Second is conservation of soil. For every 4 inch pot that fails to either germinate or produce a viable plant that you want to keep growing, that is a LOT of soil wasted. Plugs are completely dispensable because you have hundreds of them. So if one doesn't work out, no big deal, there's 97 other ones in the tray. When you start to do lots and lots of seedlings, your biggest resources become space, time, and soil. Its no reason professional growing nurseries use plugs trays and the constant incremental potting of the plants into bigger sizes. :-) The final reason for me is that I can pick the best of the best. Seeds are cheap...I can germinate hundreds of them and literally pick the best 15 or 20 specimens. If I use larger pots, I'm stuck growing what I planted, nothing more. Hope that helps, cheers!
Can I use multi purpose compost? And would vermiculite and or perlite mixed in be useful? Also, planning to put my seedlings in planters with an inbuilt water reservoir. Tho when I cleared one of those planters earlier the soil was absolutely dripping wet from being out all year. Already made the overflow drainage holes a bit bigger but am a bit apprehensive.
5/6/24 Hello Jeff. My name is Fred I have been watching you for over 2 years now to get back to planting I started Cucumber seeds but only 2 and I used a 4" peat pot the seedlings have emerged it's only been about a week and I am useing a 4" Peat Pot because I had read like Watermelon the roots don't like to be Disturb, SO when it's time to plant them out side all that needs to be done is to put them in my Fabric pots and so on...
What size are your beds? I have cucumbers that have already produced the yellow/orange flowers! I need to plant them asap! I can't plant in the ground so wanted to build a bed n similar to yours. I have 7 plants, what size bed could I do? And how deep does it need to be?
Hey Colleen, most definitely!! If you can get the staking right, you can even grow the big slicers in containers. Cukes don't have massive root systems....decent, but nothing like a tomato or pepper. If you can support the vines properly, they can grow in an astonishingly small amount of soil!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms awesome ! What are the best type to plant and what size containers do you suggest I live in a 3rd floor apartment with a small balcony. I have 4 flower boxes that at about 6 inches deep by 30 inches long. Can those be used and how many should I plant in each? Thanks for the quick response back I appreciate it.
Space. And time.....or more importantly, time wasted. When starting hundreds (thousands actually) of seedlings, having the ability to start them all in 4" or 1 gallon pots is nearly impossible, even for professional operations. And even if you could, you wouldn't. Seeds are CHEAP. Space, time, labor, and inputs are not. Not every seed germinates and not every seed that does germinate is a candidate for either sale as a starter plant or for planting in my (your) garden. When we germinate a 98-cell tray, maybe 90-92 seedlings make it. Out of those 90 seedlings, maybe 80 are viable enough to move on to 4" pots. Out of those 80, usually all are good to go, but not always. And in additional to all that, you can now stagger planting, growing, and selling. If a farm needs cucumber start plants for sale from March all the way to May, they need a steady supply. Its not good business to produce 200 right away, then sell out or sell what the market will bear for that week....then have none. Similarly, not all my beds are ready for planting at the same time. By holding back seedling trays, I can plant my greenhouse in February....but then I can also plant an outside bed in May. That's a 3-month swing. Nice to have plants staggered at different stages, due to being held back.
I have a problem. When it was time to move my cucumber for the first time, all looked well but then they started shrinking and kinda hugging themselves (Wilting) . I got scared. Later at night or in the early morning there leaves would start flowing back with life again (mostly). My main theory is because of too much sunlight or Heat. You see, The first day I switched them it was start to get very hot from 75 one day then to 88 then end of the week. Yet I have other plants that i Haven't moved yet and they seem to be doing just fine in the Heaty condition. What is your take on this? How can I make them stop wilting?
Hey Tito, yeah, cukes are sensitive little plants sometimes. Transplanting really affects them with the change in soil chemistry. Plus, new air and temperature and light intensity (ie hardening off) really needs to be done gradually with them, over the coarse of 2-3 weeks minimum.
hi! can u make another video update, i would love to see how the vines of the cucumbers look - thank you for all these great tips and videos - it helps me to see what i need to do. im growing everything indoors in my apt, bc we dont have a backyard or anything. thank u again!

Hey Darlene, great question, and yes, there's definitely a danger. But it happens when the grass is laid on too thick, clumps, and then rots. Then it just heats up like crazy and that's when it can burn (temperature) as well as nutrient burn (nitrogen). Solution is to keep it loose....or cut it with straw or shredded leaves. Give it some structure to allow air flow. :-)

With Cukes you can use a wood stake IN the pot, or a typical trellis system outside the pot, whether that is a wire or a wood lattice setup. Whichever works best for you.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms probaly some beans we have i planted one and it grew and we live in a mexican household so beans are always there (pinto beans it says)
hi! i’ve just started growing cucumbers. I have no clue what i’m doing, and i’m pretty sure i did something wrong with either planting too many seeds together, or planting it in too big of a pot pre-transplant. I just transplanted them into my box garden yesterday and they are looking worse than before i moved them. Any tips???
Hey Mallory, could definitely be transplant shock. Moving Cukes can definitely set them back....temperature, moisture differences, even pH. All things that mess with them growing normally. Keep them spaces about a foot apart and don't do any fertlizing at this point....wait until the roots take hold. Be careful not to over-water and don't stress about losing foliage here or there....the plants will shed leaves to protect itself.
What are your wires in front of the cucumber plants attached to? Also , do you have a video showing how to make plant beds? I really like yours and I've never planted above the ground before. Thank you 😉ps. I just subbed last week
They are attached to the roof! 16 feet up! I have a few bed-making videos Shonna, some easy, some super easy!: ua-cam.com/video/EdtepiQJCcY/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/PDvO-ZWlKcc/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/DwwJYJqbJ-Q/v-deo.html Cheers, happy growing to you!
I noticed you didn’t shake the root part of the cucumber and just planted straight in the ground with the original square shape. When or why should you or shouldn’t you flake the roots ?
Definitely do that when the pots are extremely root-bound. That is, the roots need help to come apart so they can spread. With a fresh pot like this, it'll have no problem doing that on its own.
Thanks Rachel!! You can fertilize (if your soil needs it) when your plants get their 2nd set of true leaves. Initially, the plants have all the food they need from the actual seed itself, and fertilizer can burn and harm the first roots that come out. A dilute organic seaweed or kelp mix is just fine, then again when flowers start to appear. Best of luck!!!
Thanks so much for watching Bethany! For Cuke worms, there's actually two: Pickleworms and Melonworms. Melonworms actually prefer the leaves, Pickleworms start at the flowers and then keep going for the fruit from the inside out. Preventative seems to be the best defense. Plant early for early harvest works because these pests need heat. If you live in a warm climate, make sure to fully destroy and remove last year's crops. Hand pick the worm nests early. Google images of them and learn to spot them! Best of luck!

Don’t know much about mulching but if I don’t hear from you probably I will get hay and use it as mulch. By the way I’m planning to build a box like you use for my cucumbers 😊😊🙏🙏
Hello Jeff. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with my cucumber plants. I have 2 of them growing in a 10 gallon grow bag on my apt balcony in South Central Texas. They're looking a little yellowish and burnt. Also, 1 is 5 ft tall and the other just 3 ft tall. I've only seen to little cucumbers and then they die and fall off! First time gardening so I don't what else to do. Please help. Thanks
I decided to grow 4 types of cucumbers this year and the lemon and straight eights were in the mix! I just now have my seedlings to the cotelydon stage. Fingers crossed! I also decided to try mouse melons but no germination yet. Have you grown those?
Hi Jeff I just have a few questions for u. Do you do your growing on southern Vancouver Island? What are your usual night temperature from June to September? I live in Red Deer AB. My nighttime temperatures here seldom get over 50 F or 10 C. So my tomatoe and peppers I grow in greenhouses. My cucumbers have been grown in the ground from transplants. Historically they have done pretty well. Not this year. I am going to dig them up and move them to a greenhouse. I have some new tomatoe varieties that I am not overly impressed with that I am moving outside. Do u think that will work?
What's your opinion on the real reason cucumbers turn bitter? I had seven varieties all in the same bed same treatment and water condition. Almost every one was bitter but produced very well otherwise
Hey rabbitshi, I tend not to fertilize my plants. I feed my soil to feed my plants. For smaller, self-contained pots and containers, I will add a DIY fertilizer or liquid seaweed extract. It can simply be watered right in through the mulch, easy peasy.
I valued your cucumber series and want to highly thank you for especially giving time periods and what to look for before you transplant and what size pot to use for your first transplant. I am a beginner with a yellow thumb I need to stay cautious while planting because I killed every vegetable I began to grow. Now, I’m not giving up and starting over. My cucumbers are thriving and they are not leggy as my first time starting. So, thank you kindly for your patience in your video, explaining as if you are teaching a beginner. I am in debt to you. With Cukes you can use a wood stake IN the pot, or a typical trellis system outside the pot, whether that is a wire or a wood lattice setup. Whichever works best for you.
Very nicely done !
Thanks Dani, all the best!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I shared with a friend who has leggy cuc's. Great advice about burying them deep.
Can you use grass clippings that have weed & feed fertilizer added?
Oh Lori, don't do that!! Make sure the lawn hasn't had any sort of treatments at all! Be safe!
Excellent series. Thank you! 🙏
Thanks man your videos have great detail, you are well spoken and a very intelligent farmer/grower,

I wish you would have shown the plants climbing the wires.
I have a bush variety called picklebush. Does this variety pollinate itself?
My cucumbers started flowering while still in the pots. What can I do to get them growing?
Where is the link for organic DIY garden mix?

That was a great video as I'm doing cucumbers this year really good information
Right on, best of luck with your Cukes this year!
hi! i’ve just started growing cucumbers.
Hi I love your channel!! When do I start fertilizing my plants? I planted seeds about a week and a half ago and I am growing them in a container .
Between the video part 2 and part 3 you mentioned hardening off but we didn't quite see what you did to harden off.
I ended up doing a hardening off video for all the big summer plants as its all the same way: ua-cam.com/video/MsMCG01krRc/v-deo.html
I loved your videos, i have been looking for a stage by stage planting guide! You nailed! thank you
Thanks Tabatha! Best of luck with your Cukes this year!
Great 3 part series Jeff. Thank you so much ❤️
Cheers Paulette, thanks for watching!
Thanks my plants is at part 2 but now I can get the bed and wire ready
Right on Janeen! I hope you get tons this year!
I love this 3 part tutorial. It is super simple and compact. Last year I got cucumber worms. How do I avoid those pests?
Thanks so much for watching Bethany! For Cuke worms, there's actually two: Pickleworms and Melonworms. Melonworms actually prefer the leaves, Pickleworms start at the flowers and then keep going for the fruit from the inside out. Preventative seems to be the best defense. Plant early for early harvest works because these pests need heat. If you live in a warm climate, make sure to fully destroy and remove last year's crops. Hand pick the worm nests early. Google images of them and learn to spot them! Best of luck!

Don't they need bees for pollination?
Hey Nancy, Cucumbers can self-pollinate, although not as well as Tomatoes do. Both male and female flowers reside on the plant. Cheers!
Cool thanks
Thanks for watching!
As a new gardener and someone who has never had a 'green thumb', I appreciate your videos SO MUCH! Thank you!!!!
Thank you so much for very clear and informative videos. My question is if I use grass cutting as mulch , won’t I introduce weeds to my box? I am very inexperienced but enthusiastic planter.
I love this series I watched all 3 and my cucumbers are doing amazing
great series! One thing....I didn't think peppers were the same as tomatoes for planting up the stem and sending out roots.
Do you have a suggestions for dealing with cucumber beetles?
Of you have leggy cucumber seedling can you bury the stems?
Your a great teacher! Thank you for your easy to follow videos!
I like this song too.
Thanks for your tutorials. I find them very informative and helpful. Keep up the good work. Dwight
What's your opinion on the real reason cucumbers turn bitter? I had seven varieties all in the same bed same treatment and water condition. Almost every one was bitter but produced very well otherwise
To low water. If it's very hot, 5 litre a day.
I like the idea of mulching all the potted plants. But how do you add fertilizer later on?
Thank you so so much!
