I don't even think it's necessarily that, since people are playing tanks that have been resurged. I think his biggest issue is itemization. The only time you can vary your build up is 4+ items in most matchups, so if his core 3 items aren't good then he just doesn't feel good to play. I feel like he's similar to ekko in that way. Ekko will be dropped from the face of the earth until protobelt gets buffed. Then ekko is pick or ban and while Kennen isn't to that extreme anymore, he definitely used to be.

@@strider8662 I really don't think I agree, new champs are often broken, but flawless? come on. lets say samira for example, yes she was broken, but she had a very obvious flaw: if you want to do any damage you physically have to all in at melee range, which is dangerous because you're a squishy adc who's vulnerable to burst damage. flaws aren't bad game design, its just that kennans flaws create a confused playstyle that players struggle to make work
@@oneringtorulethemagicarp7199 here is the thing with Samira, even after nerfs she is one of the tankiest and hardest to kill adcs in the game (alongside the ones like draven and lucian in stat-wise). And she has one thing that almost no other ADC has, burst damage. She is one of the few if not only adc with up front dps instead of long, consistent damage. There is no other ADC that can deal that much damage without getting killed despite her terrible range (which means she doesnt even have to position herself at all, thats literally the most important ADC skill). And on top of that she is good early, mid and late game so she doesnt fall off either. Even her weaknesses are there only when she doesnt need it.
i play Kennen a lot. he's fun and he's a solid laner. The issue is. He's outdated. Kennen without ultimate is essentially useless. Esp since so many champs have gap closers now... You're just gonna get hopped on when ur ult is down
His original identity was being one of the most mobile champions in the game but now that’s a laughable claim, lightning rush is just so outclassed in terms of functionality. Would love to see a minor rework to play up the lightning fast mobile ninja design
I've been working with predator and reduced item cooldown runes these days, and he hasn't been bad at all for me in solo lanes. By far my safest pick, that still has a use late game.
I use Kennen's ulti just to harrass in lane then i get such a huge lead that even with my low hp my dmg is way too high and if i play safe you cant kill me
I really love Kennen. My biggest problem is just that he has way too much counterplay and also just feels so weak in laning phase. His potential in the lategame is completely crazy but it can be quite difficult to get there. I think if his laning phase was re designed into a midlane champion he would be way more fun to play

I personally love the explosive duality of champions like Kennen, and here's why: 1 - As both a mage and assassin main, champs like him are the only ones that allow you to enjoy both the long range safe neutral game of a mage _and_ the explosive all-in of an assassin. 2 - The duality of his kit makes room for a certain trickster mindset when playing, and there's nothing better than out of the blue just suddenly exploding the face of that pesky other player that spent half the laning phase disrespecting you. All in all the Kennen archetype is a hard one to find and removing that duality for a more "intuitive" mainstream playstyle would leave a lot of people without anywhere to go, I think. Champs like Kennen don't need to be super popular, they just need to be there for the dedicated few that love them in a way they just can't love anyone else. Maybe give him a blink tho, take Alice from Mobile Legends who has lissandra blink (ik mobile moba but please stick with me)
It's called balance, something people don't see these days. I mean Zilean and Anivia are good examples balanced since they don't get played in competitive that often and still playable in SoloQ. Also their kits maybe outdated but still manage to do better than than most other champions.
The real reason nobody plays Kennen is that he had so many consecutive nerfs that made him feel like absolute shit to play. Everything from his last hitting to his damage was gutted the last ~3 years.
@@MerlinCross13 actually, attack speed makes sense, because that procs his w passive, which applies extra on hit ap damage, and a mark of the storm. Kennen's abilities mark the enemies, and 3 marks stun them, so if he has that on his auto attack, then he can either do that combo afar without his e, or without his q to make it undodgeable. That why people build attack speed on him. That extra ability is really helpful in the leaning phase, and for ganking. (gosh, I sound like a pro player, who defends every idiocy in game design)
I love this series! I've played this game for years now and have tried all the champs and you do a great job of putting words as to why these champs feel bad/weird to me. I can just point people to your videos to help them understand why a champ feels weird to them.
Def an underrated champion, I usually play him mid rather than top simply because of how unrewarding it is to lane with him. Mid allows you to roam and look for 2v2s and 3v3s whenever the lane is boring and you can go electrocute and ignite to threaten kills and boost his damage. his playstyle doesn't really change since you're always looking for all-ins and teamfights in the midlane and you can potentially hard carry and snowball the lane. Playing him top is VERY different than playing him mid, most of the time you have to either play aery and poke or play phase rush and look for tp plays with your ult.

he does have some good wave management with his ew, but the thing is he just doesn't have anything to actually get into the backline, meanwhile Vlad can just ult on you, hold his period blood down and turn into blood spraying your team to get a penta thanks to the added movement speed he gets from phase rush, but Kennen can't just turn untargettable and thus, feels bad.
He's supposed to be like, speedy, electric, surge, etc. Literally make his ultimate like Pikachu's final smash where he just blinks around untargettable shocking enemies. But I guess thats just master Yi's Q on an ult lol
This video explains very well why Kennen is an amazing support. Let me expound: Botlane frequently consists of two squishy champs. And at least always one. And he is... very good at dealing with those. While he is good with poking and can be good with cc. The real power comes in these two traits: Combining hexflash with his ult on bot makes it near impossible for their ADC to escape. And his presence at dragon is very valuable. Because he is so powerful in teamfights. He does phenomenally well in the support role. You should be able to make a large amount of $$ from your poking and get a good number of kills early with flash ult, or hexflash ult. Because of that, I never have to worry about getting rocketbelt. But I go straight into night harvester. Which makes a massive difference in damage. Just ban Leona if you go support.
YES. Im actually testing Kennen sup rn and im so hyped! No need to farm cs means more time to poke with endless AAs Qs and Ws. And then he has crazy mobility to kite out enemy sup. And then he has CC which is sorta easy to proc and is extremely useful to create kill angles or just disengage. I also like to take exhaust because it turns off one enemys damage early on in order for you to live or slows another low hp enemy to run them down. And then rocketbelt and level 6 come in... so mobility is even higher while cc is even more disguisting for enemies. Gank potential is really good too because of free Es with no cd and no mana requirement. You can basically go mid then just chunk opp midlaner and get back to botlane in a matter of seconds. And as a support you can and you should choose those cheaper utility AP items like rocketbelt or even rylais. His damage with these items is still fine because supports arent really about damaging but about peeling and providing utility things to a teammates who damage instead of you and that gained utility helps you to shine
Just make it so he doesn't have to go in WITH the ult but let it be a storm cloud that he can shoot into a direction. The further he aims it, the faster it goes but if he aims it closer it also moves slower. (Imagine it being aimed like the hecarim ult). At 3 stacks the enemy get stunned but they can try to move out of that big aoe before it reaches that amount to dodge it. The speed of the cloud also influences the chance to hit the enemys with all 3 stacks. Allows for counterplay. Then give him movementspeed inside of that aoe but no dmg buff. He can then use it as a way to get behind the enemy line or in a pinch to get away. Fixed.
As a Kennen main I found this not only a very fair analysis, but extremely insightful. Very well done! I agree with what some have said, give him even more armor and/or magic resist during his ult. A dash would be fine too, but shouldn't decrease the damage output. As the video states, Kennen is extremely fair, so he shouldnt take a nerf just to get back to the level of all the broken meta champs.
@@bringanotebook28 You're right, but Kennen in the right hands is a very frustrating champ to deal with for melee champs, especially those without dashes or only 1 dash and no cc. You can really see how weak Kennen is if he is played into something that can get to him and lock him down for just 0.5 second, thinking of stuff like Camille, Irelia, Yone and Sylas, those champs actually just demolish him and just farm him for kills, while champs like Illaoi, Urgot, Darius etc. cant play lane against a good Kennen. Thats what I mean by his E being toxic, because for some champs, it makes the lane super uninteractive, while for others its irrelevant.
I have kennen as a backup if my irelia gets picked or banned I personally really enjoy his playstyle I do think he can definitly get a buff csing is quite weird and you have to put all ur abilities on cd to stun someone wich makes the stun fairly useless as you can’t really follow up with such bad autoattacks

Neeko's release completely killed Kennen's career imo, shes kennen but with a better engage and a shield on her ult, plus everything is instant, i switched to neeko top from kennen and havent looked back since.
Early game, Kennen's ranged advantage lends itself well to a favorable laning phase because he can easily harass and cs simultaneously. That combined with his good base damage on abilities allows him to trade against the patterns of most meta top laners. Kennen is fairly gankable, so make sure you're not pushing in. If you are, your ultimate is a good get out of jail free card as it will stun pursuers as you scurry away. Early game is not when the splitpushing starts, after all. Mid game sees Kennen starting to assert himself in 1v1s through his Blade of the Ruined King and Frozen Mallet power spike, meaning that he can chase down tanks, outdamage them and outsustain them in any prolonged fight. This makes it impossible for them to lane against him, yielding two scenarios: either a collapse onto you, or a teamfight away from you. With Kennen’s main goal being splitpushing, it’s imperative that you don’t join fights immediately and try to signal to your team that it’s worth backing off if the teamfight situation is likely. Avoiding any collapse is key to splitpushing, and therefore investing in Control Wards and using your trinket constantly will help you determine when it is safe to push your advantage. Once more, there are plenty of ways to disengage, amplified by the Frozen Mallet passive and Blade of the Ruined King active. The late game is when Kennen’s splitpush truly comes online. With the damage reduction from Phantom Dancer and the new Death’s Dance, coupled with the attack speed and W passive available to Kennen, he should be able to 1v1 most any other champion, especially the enemy top laner who he is likely to be ahead of because of his smoother power curve and easier laning phase. In teamfights, should Kennen join them, he functions as a second AD carry with the ability to peel for himself and his team in unique ways, being a part of the backline and having an ultimate with great zone control for your entire backline. Using that optimally will be key to getting that last bit of necessary damage out there to win the fight. Kennen does not go in with this build, he is meant to be a peeling presence and AD carry, unlike his “go button” AP style which relies on Zhonya’s and his ultimate to completely dismantle enemy teams.
Imo Kennen has a similar problem as a lot of older champions. As it was said in the video, he is a very honest and transparent champion. And seeing some of the newest champions (e.g. Samira, Viego) makes me even more convinced that what I'm thinking might be true. I think the solution for that is rather simple: just hive him some kind of dash. It can't let him go through walls tho, that would be busted. My idea is to: 1. Reduce the dmg on his Q a bit and give it a small explosion on impact, something around Orianna's Q in terms of area (its name is Thundering Shuriken so it kinda makes sense too) 2. Remove the passive part of his W 3. Change his E to a short dash that would have extended range towards champions marked with his passive. It would also make his next auto attack deal some additional dmg and apply a stack of passive to the target. I thought that also its cooldown could get reduced each time you proc your passive on a champion. Obviously this whole thing would require a lot of changes in numbers but it actually seems like a decent idea to me (I swear I'm not biased lmao). change the W passive actually, if he uses his W on a marked target he can recast W to dash a number of units acording to the number of mark the target had. 1 mark = 200 units. if he stuns the target then the dash has a 600 unity range.
would be cool if kennen had a dash, or if he could go through walls with his e, kinda like kayn, but only 2 sec duration and maybe putting a cd on the walls like talons e could be good i think. I feel so useless and helpless when im playing kennen vs all these newer champs that have busted abilities. If u could go through walls u could at least ult in teamfights so ur useful
His E just needs to be a short cool down dash, or like storm spirit in Dora that lets you dash as long as you have resources, then move some power off W since I’d say his W isn’t super crucial to his identity. Ideally I’d love some major changes to his ult to be a little less binary, allow kennel players and enemies to do more with and against it , but that would probably get a lot of backlash
this champion is actually nuts mid-lane. you're all in combo is powerful and he roams super quick with e water walking. he is awkward to get into a fight but super powerful omce he is.
You cant roam if most midlane champs have better wave clear that you. You cant even wave clear with your e without getting chunked by a ryze, syndra or oriana combo
Kennen sounds like an ADC character forced into top lane... God, as someone who played off-role gods in SMITE, I want to try all these Ranged top laners as ADCs and just experiment.
Tried to be a Kennen main when I started playing years ago. He’s still my favorite champ but good god can I just not be fucked to play him often, if at all.
to his ult AP increase arm an mr, and last for 3 sec after. E, increase + ms to 3 sec, add sends out 2/2/2/4/4 additional balls of lightning, can jump to other balls each one time, when jump all the balls arc lightning between each other dealing dmg. AP increase ms, act duration an atk speed. make him mana champ. he is suppose to be an assassin, meaning surprise/ burst dmg

I think kennen's ult should refresh his E at the least. That way it would be an interesting traid-off. Use the refresh to get out, or to go in even harder
I remember when I first started playing league back at the end of season 1 or beginning of season 2. I always thought Kennen was one of the COOLEST champions in the game, and his ult was awesome. really liked playing him back then
I've been thinking, a lot of the champions you talk about in this series aren't really outdated or extremely weak. And I remembered what happened with Karthus. He was seen nowhere because mid meta was too hard for him until they cahnged dark harvest and found his place in the jungle. So I feel most of these champs just need that, a small change in some conditions that would make them suitable in various situations
Ive thinking of reworking Kennen into Minato from Naruto: make the W an empowerment: W once enhances any ability, cast it again to proc the old W, Q is the shuriken W+Q makes the first hit single hit but makes a static field around the target for 1.5s to make it spread the mark, E alone is the speed boost W+E dashes you to your Q mark. It doesn't makes Kennen to different so it's still ken, it won't be broken as it relies on using the champion on range + having the ability to change playstyles and allowing Kennen to go in easier and itemizing differently.
I really wish Kennen was better suited as a mid laner but one problem I’ve found the most is his lack of wave clear. I’d have to run ingenious Hunter with protobelt just to help clear waves. I was thinking of maybe giving his Q hit a sorta aoe effect when it hits a target, a bit like Lissandra Q. It’d deal significantly less damage but it’ll help getting his stacks on minions (or champion) without using his E
as an avarage kennen enjoyer and being on the way to become an OTP kennen i would love to receive a "mark effect" we had on a failed lebalnc rework. ur Q marks target (enemy champ or minion) and if it gets hit with same ability (Q) then it damages nearby targets for small amount and marks them with his passive that combined with his W would waveclear. so u get a waveclear without wasting ur mobility (E), but also that waveclear wouldnt be as fast thus ballanced because u are forced to wait Q cooldown. this would ALSO allow kennen to be little bit more useful in teamfights where ur ULT is on CD or when u got denied by any type of CC. i personally dont think that adding some type of dashes on kennen would be great even if we take some dmg out. it just feels kinda wrong. u are going to be AoE assassin which isnt fair imo. however adding his Q addition mark ive mentioned above would allow him become a little bit more effective on AoE which he is right now but without making him assassin that has dash, fast mobility via E + reduced dmg while its active. (fckn yone clone but AP)
Neeko is another ranged champ who has a similarly shaped ult that requires her to be quite close to enemies. She also often builds rocket belt like vlad and kennen for this reason.
I know this video is a couple years old, but I started climbing like crazy with kennen. It’s like something clicked. Or I’m just in the elo where people don’t know how to handle him, since he is hardly played, and my winning will plateau.
Tbh I misuse your videos. I'm a bronze player and started with League at the end of last year. Your "Why noone/everyone plays..." gives great insight in what I may encounter in the Rift and then I already have a good idea of their strengths and weaknesses. So thanks for that :D
you can't proc phase rush in a teamfight , it takes too much time to proc before you get the MS to run towards them and you need to use Q + W to proc it which further lowers your burst if you get on them and you also need to be in auto range to proc it which is dangerous . and it is predictable still because the enemy knows that you'll run to them when you have the proc of phase rush and have time to cc you as you come in , same problem , unlike when you have dash.
Watching T1 picking kennen literally every time and beating HLE top laner picks and then coming here ... I guess most people should give kennen a chance
The itemization philosophy is directly opposed to DOTA, where some items are absolutely a must buy for some heroes and it is only about how fast can they get them.
I think Vars idea to fix him is very good, before he said it I had thought of adding a dash to his ult before it starts, that way he can close the distance and also evade something like a Gragas ult or Thresh's E, I would even make him invulnerable during the dash so he can't just be kicked away by an Alistar before the ult hits, at least let him dash so he can put in some damage if Alistar kicks him out after the dash.
I used to play main top Kennen for around 2 years, he is the character I mained to longest and my first top main so he still a little place in my heart and I still sometimes play him. Before that I used to main support for 5 years. I started to play him because I sucked at CS and wanted to try ranged if it helped. I picked him also for his share of crowd controls and I'm usually attracted to champions with very impactful ultimate and utility oriented playstyle. This reminded me of the gameplay of several support and I mostly play tanks top, so it gave me opportunity to play a more damage oriented champion. The point of the video I want to underline is the items part, I like to be creative on my items but Kennen doesn't allow this at all. The fancier you could get usually involve loosing Hextech or Zohnya, which is terrible. I agree with the fact that you could take away some damages to improve the quality of life overall (in items and/or gap closer)
i play kennen mid so i love baiting people into ballsy tower dives with their jungler and support and punishing it with slicing mealstrom. if you don’t have too much damage on the tower the enemy team popping rift herald might be the push they need to come right into your mealstrom-y arms, stunning them under tower and guaranteeing a kill on at least one of them
I think that aesthetic is a big part (for some of these) in why noone plays. If some characters had more generally cool/appealing themes they would be more picked I think.
Allowing players to optimize fairness and counterplay out of competition is effectively allowing them to optimize competition out of competition. And it's a classic study in a very common game design problem. If you allow players to optimize the fun out of a game they will. Don't fix Canon, fix the rest of the game, or watch it die slowly. But we all know which one Riot's going to choose
I dont understand why is a lack of dash a problem. U go phase rush, celerity, E + protobelt and ur faster then their dashes. And you can avoid getting peeled by flanking or just waiting for the right opportunity. Also, his Two playstyles actually synergize well. Because u have the potential to kite the enemy and then turn on him and his team. + u are dive-resistant. Kennen is one of greatest picks if u know how to.
I'm playing kennen pretty much but I'm low elo player so it my opinion might be a bit diffrent by this People really often play only melee champions what's allow kennen to buy night harvester. When you still go with a lot of burst ap items such as horizon focus, rabadon's deathcap then you can simply one shot enemies with your ult and don't have to care about surviving their damage. Untill you're catching them not expectating you. Of course when they have champs like a vayne, tristana, alistar or lee sin they can really easily counter you. I like this champ because it teaches me what I can do in situations where something counters me. I don't know what kennen needs. These dashes sounds pretty well but then it could be too op. Like you said it's just too balanced so doesn't need changes in my opinion. When you're playing kennen phase rush makes you much stronger and i like to take taste of blood and ultimate hunter what's make me usefull more often. If someone want to discuss go ahead.
what if Riot would rework kennen E to instead being a movement speed buff , to turn it into 2 small fast dashes with 2 charges, so he actually feels like he'a lightning ball by teleporting around instead of being just faster. this way his mobility problem would be solved for the most part

Local kennen main, you kinda indirectly mentioned this but to be clear, I think the biggest issue withe kennen is his inability to clear waves but his primary damage ability in lane is a skill shot that's blocked by minions. Unlike most of the ranged top laners, kennens primary damage ability isn't point and click so he has to actually punish mistakes rather than just Q mindlessly or auto. He CAN auto and point and click with W and W passive but you'll be dealing what like.... 120 damage? Compared to someone like vlad who is super linear and brain dead it's just not as easy to pub stomp lane.
He just needs a rework, keep the ult and the stun passive, but the rest of the kit needs revamp. He’s a ninja who doesn’t feel very ninjay... he need more on the lightning rush like a blink or dash (ninja like). His q feels very bland. And the W feels like a chore to manage. It might even be cool to be a ranged when far and melee when close champ. TLDR... Rework my champ please :,(
i played kennen pretty much, having around 75-80k points and mastery 7 rn, so far the highest problem i had are constant problems with energy especially when engaging, e wastes half of the energy and if you didn't hit anyone with it you are stuck instantly, especially that you have nothing to disengage if you didnt use ult or smthing else to hit a second stun, since first one just isnt long enough to put you into confirmed safety against half of toplaners. other than that hes pretty fun champion that just banishes any squishy champions without shields under towers and other places, punishes most ranged toplaners really hard
As a kennen OTP. Kennen play style is like you described BUT, where his bread and butter is in his ability to position correctly for objectives so that the enemy team has to walk past him to engage simple E rocket belt makes short work of a full team. Kennen is a rough champ to even farm with. Since his AD ratio hit(Honestly i understand why it was hit on hit kennen was BUSTED) but now it makes his AP farming harder and the nerf to rocketbelt hurt our souls

1- a very high skill floor
2- the kit isn't attractive

@@strider8662 I really don't think I agree, new champs are often broken, but flawless? come on. lets say samira for example, yes she was broken, but she had a very obvious flaw: if you want to do any damage you physically have to all in at melee range, which is dangerous because you're a squishy adc who's vulnerable to burst damage. flaws aren't bad game design, its just that kennans flaws create a confused playstyle that players struggle to make work
@@oneringtorulethemagicarp7199 here is the thing with Samira, even after nerfs she is one of the tankiest and hardest to kill adcs in the game (alongside the ones like draven and lucian in stat-wise). And she has one thing that almost no other ADC has, burst damage. She is one of the few if not only adc with up front dps instead of long, consistent damage.
There is no other ADC that can deal that much damage without getting killed despite her terrible range (which means she doesnt even have to position herself at all, thats literally the most important ADC skill). And on top of that she is good early, mid and late game so she doesnt fall off either. Even her weaknesses are there only when she doesnt need it.
i play Kennen a lot. he's fun and he's a solid laner. The issue is. He's outdated. Kennen without ultimate is essentially useless. Esp since so many champs have gap closers now... You're just gonna get hopped on when ur ult is down
His original identity was being one of the most mobile champions in the game but now that’s a laughable claim, lightning rush is just so outclassed in terms of functionality. Would love to see a minor rework to play up the lightning fast mobile ninja design
I've been working with predator and reduced item cooldown runes these days, and he hasn't been bad at all for me in solo lanes. By far my safest pick, that still has a use late game.

I use Kennen's ulti just to harrass in lane then i get such a huge lead that even with my low hp my dmg is way too high and if i play safe you cant kill me
His e used to give him the armour and mr that are on his ult now, making getting close up without dying much easier

I really love Kennen. My biggest problem is just that he has way too much counterplay and also just feels so weak in laning phase. His potential in the lategame is completely crazy but it can be quite difficult to get there. I think if his laning phase was re designed into a midlane champion he would be way more fun to play

I personally love the explosive duality of champions like Kennen, and here's why:
1 - As both a mage and assassin main, champs like him are the only ones that allow you to enjoy both the long range safe neutral game of a mage _and_ the explosive all-in of an assassin.
2 - The duality of his kit makes room for a certain trickster mindset when playing, and there's nothing better than out of the blue just suddenly exploding the face of that pesky other player that spent half the laning phase disrespecting you.
All in all the Kennen archetype is a hard one to find and removing that duality for a more "intuitive" mainstream playstyle would leave a lot of people without anywhere to go, I think.
Champs like Kennen don't need to be super popular, they just need to be there for the dedicated few that love them in a way they just can't love anyone else.
Maybe give him a blink tho, take Alice from Mobile Legends who has lissandra blink (ik mobile moba but please stick with me)

The real reason nobody plays Kennen is that he had so many consecutive nerfs that made him feel like absolute shit to play. Everything from his last hitting to his damage was gutted the last ~3 years.
His E used to give bonus armor and I think magic resistance, they need to put that back and give him slightly better health per level.

@@MerlinCross13 actually, attack speed makes sense, because that procs his w passive, which applies extra on hit ap damage, and a mark of the storm. Kennen's abilities mark the enemies, and 3 marks stun them, so if he has that on his auto attack, then he can either do that combo afar without his e, or without his q to make it undodgeable. That why people build attack speed on him. That extra ability is really helpful in the leaning phase, and for ganking. (gosh, I sound like a pro player, who defends every idiocy in game design)
I love this series! I've played this game for years now and have tried all the champs and you do a great job of putting words as to why these champs feel bad/weird to me. I can just point people to your videos to help them understand why a champ feels weird to them.
Def an underrated champion, I usually play him mid rather than top simply because of how unrewarding it is to lane with him. Mid allows you to roam and look for 2v2s and 3v3s whenever the lane is boring and you can go electrocute and ignite to threaten kills and boost his damage. his playstyle doesn't really change since you're always looking for all-ins and teamfights in the midlane and you can potentially hard carry and snowball the lane. Playing him top is VERY different than playing him mid, most of the time you have to either play aery and poke or play phase rush and look for tp plays with your ult.

he does have some good wave management with his ew, but the thing is he just doesn't have anything to actually get into the backline, meanwhile Vlad can just ult on you, hold his period blood down and turn into blood spraying your team to get a penta thanks to the added movement speed he gets from phase rush, but Kennen can't just turn untargettable and thus, feels bad.
He's supposed to be like, speedy, electric, surge, etc. Literally make his ultimate like Pikachu's final smash where he just blinks around untargettable shocking enemies. But I guess thats just master Yi's Q on an ult lol

This video explains very well why Kennen is an amazing support. Let me expound: Botlane frequently consists of two squishy champs. And at least always one. And he is... very good at dealing with those. While he is good with poking and can be good with cc. The real power comes in these two traits: Combining hexflash with his ult on bot makes it near impossible for their ADC to escape. And his presence at dragon is very valuable. Because he is so powerful in teamfights. He does phenomenally well in the support role. You should be able to make a large amount of $$ from your poking and get a good number of kills early with flash ult, or hexflash ult. Because of that, I never have to worry about getting rocketbelt. But I go straight into night harvester. Which makes a massive difference in damage. Just ban Leona if you go support.

YES. Im actually testing Kennen sup rn and im so hyped!
No need to farm cs means more time to poke with endless AAs Qs and Ws. And then he has crazy mobility to kite out enemy sup. And then he has CC which is sorta easy to proc and is extremely useful to create kill angles or just disengage. I also like to take exhaust because it turns off one enemys damage early on in order for you to live or slows another low hp enemy to run them down. And then rocketbelt and level 6 come in... so mobility is even higher while cc is even more disguisting for enemies. Gank potential is really good too because of free Es with no cd and no mana requirement. You can basically go mid then just chunk opp midlaner and get back to botlane in a matter of seconds.
And as a support you can and you should choose those cheaper utility AP items like rocketbelt or even rylais. His damage with these items is still fine because supports arent really about damaging but about peeling and providing utility things to a teammates who damage instead of you and that gained utility helps you to shine
Just make it so he doesn't have to go in WITH the ult but let it be a storm cloud that he can shoot into a direction. The further he aims it, the faster it goes but if he aims it closer it also moves slower. (Imagine it being aimed like the hecarim ult). At 3 stacks the enemy get stunned but they can try to move out of that big aoe before it reaches that amount to dodge it. The speed of the cloud also influences the chance to hit the enemys with all 3 stacks. Allows for counterplay. Then give him movementspeed inside of that aoe but no dmg buff. He can then use it as a way to get behind the enemy line or in a pinch to get away.

As a Kennen main I found this not only a very fair analysis, but extremely insightful. Very well done! I agree with what some have said, give him even more armor and/or magic resist during his ult. A dash would be fine too, but shouldn't decrease the damage output. As the video states, Kennen is extremely fair, so he shouldnt take a nerf just to get back to the level of all the broken meta champs.
I think they should revert the armor and mr he gets on his R back to his E. Most of the time when you R, you're in hourglass.

@@bringanotebook28 You're right, but Kennen in the right hands is a very frustrating champ to deal with for melee champs, especially those without dashes or only 1 dash and no cc. You can really see how weak Kennen is if he is played into something that can get to him and lock him down for just 0.5 second, thinking of stuff like Camille, Irelia, Yone and Sylas, those champs actually just demolish him and just farm him for kills, while champs like Illaoi, Urgot, Darius etc. cant play lane against a good Kennen.
Thats what I mean by his E being toxic, because for some champs, it makes the lane super uninteractive, while for others its irrelevant.

I have kennen as a backup if my irelia gets picked or banned I personally really enjoy his playstyle I do think he can definitly get a buff csing is quite weird and you have to put all ur abilities on cd to stun someone wich makes the stun fairly useless as you can’t really follow up with such bad autoattacks

Neeko's release completely killed Kennen's career imo, shes kennen but with a better engage and a shield on her ult, plus everything is instant, i switched to neeko top from kennen and havent looked back since.
Early game, Kennen's ranged advantage lends itself well to a favorable laning phase because he can easily harass and cs simultaneously. That combined with his good base damage on abilities allows him to trade against the patterns of most meta top laners. Kennen is fairly gankable, so make sure you're not pushing in. If you are, your ultimate is a good get out of jail free card as it will stun pursuers as you scurry away. Early game is not when the splitpushing starts, after all.
Mid game sees Kennen starting to assert himself in 1v1s through his Blade of the Ruined King and Frozen Mallet power spike, meaning that he can chase down tanks, outdamage them and outsustain them in any prolonged fight. This makes it impossible for them to lane against him, yielding two scenarios: either a collapse onto you, or a teamfight away from you. With Kennen’s main goal being splitpushing, it’s imperative that you don’t join fights immediately and try to signal to your team that it’s worth backing off if the teamfight situation is likely. Avoiding any collapse is key to splitpushing, and therefore investing in Control Wards and using your trinket constantly will help you determine when it is safe to push your advantage. Once more, there are plenty of ways to disengage, amplified by the Frozen Mallet passive and Blade of the Ruined King active.
The late game is when Kennen’s splitpush truly comes online. With the damage reduction from Phantom Dancer and the new Death’s Dance, coupled with the attack speed and W passive available to Kennen, he should be able to 1v1 most any other champion, especially the enemy top laner who he is likely to be ahead of because of his smoother power curve and easier laning phase. In teamfights, should Kennen join them, he functions as a second AD carry with the ability to peel for himself and his team in unique ways, being a part of the backline and having an ultimate with great zone control for your entire backline. Using that optimally will be key to getting that last bit of necessary damage out there to win the fight. Kennen does not go in with this build, he is meant to be a peeling presence and AD carry, unlike his “go button” AP style which relies on Zhonya’s and his ultimate to completely dismantle enemy teams.

Imo Kennen has a similar problem as a lot of older champions. As it was said in the video, he is a very honest and transparent champion. And seeing some of the newest champions (e.g. Samira, Viego) makes me even more convinced that what I'm thinking might be true.
I think the solution for that is rather simple: just hive him some kind of dash. It can't let him go through walls tho, that would be busted.
My idea is to:
1. Reduce the dmg on his Q a bit and give it a small explosion on impact, something around Orianna's Q in terms of area (its name is Thundering Shuriken so it kinda makes sense too)
2. Remove the passive part of his W
3. Change his E to a short dash that would have extended range towards champions marked with his passive. It would also make his next auto attack deal some additional dmg and apply a stack of passive to the target. I thought that also its cooldown could get reduced each time you proc your passive on a champion.
Obviously this whole thing would require a lot of changes in numbers but it actually seems like a decent idea to me (I swear I'm not biased lmao).

change the W passive actually, if he uses his W on a marked target he can recast W to dash a number of units acording to the number of mark the target had.

would be cool if kennen had a dash, or if he could go through walls with his e, kinda like kayn, but only 2 sec duration and maybe putting a cd on the walls like talons e could be good i think. His E just needs to be a short cool down dash, or like storm spirit in Dora that lets you dash as long as you have resources, then move some power off W since I’d say his W isn’t super crucial to his identity. Ideally I’d love some major changes to his ult to be a little less binary, allow kennel players and enemies to do more with and against it , but that would probably get a lot of backlash

this champion is actually nuts mid-lane. you're all in combo is powerful and he roams super quick with e water walking. he is awkward to get into a fight but super powerful omce he is.
You cant roam if most midlane champs have better wave clear that you. You cant even wave clear with your e without getting chunked by a ryze, syndra or oriana combo

God, as someone who played off-role gods in SMITE, I want to try all these Ranged top laners as ADCs and just experiment.
Tried to be a Kennen main when I started playing years ago. He’s still my favorite champ but good god can I just not be fucked to play him often, if at all.
to his ult AP increase arm an mr, and last for 3 sec after. E, increase + ms to 3 sec, add sends out 2/2/2/4/4 additional balls of lightning, can jump to other balls each one time, when jump all the balls arc lightning between each other dealing dmg. AP increase ms, act duration an atk speed. make him mana champ. he is suppose to be an assassin, meaning surprise/ burst dmg
I enjoy how both of the characters i main are listed in this channel both Kennen and Heimerdinger. I absolutely love them both at Top lane there my all time favorites
I think kennen's ult should refresh his E at the least. That way it would be an interesting traid-off. Use the refresh to get out, or to go in even harder

I remember when I first started playing league back at the end of season 1 or beginning of season 2. I always thought Kennen was one of the COOLEST champions in the game, and his ult was awesome. really liked playing him back then
I've been thinking, a lot of the champions you talk about in this series aren't really outdated or extremely weak. And I remembered what happened with Karthus. He was seen nowhere because mid meta was too hard for him until they cahnged dark harvest and found his place in the jungle. So I feel most of these champs just need that, a small change in some conditions that would make them suitable in various situations
Ive thinking of reworking Kennen into Minato from Naruto: make the W an empowerment: W once enhances any ability, cast it again to proc the old W, Q is the shuriken W+Q makes the first hit single hit but makes a static field around the target for 1.5s to make it spread the mark, E alone is the speed boost W+E dashes you to your Q mark. It doesn't makes Kennen to different so it's still ken, it won't be broken as it relies on using the champion on range + having the ability to change playstyles and allowing Kennen to go in easier and itemizing differently.

I really wish Kennen was better suited as a mid laner but one problem I’ve found the most is his lack of wave clear. I’d have to run ingenious Hunter with protobelt just to help clear waves. I was thinking of maybe giving his Q hit a sorta aoe effect when it hits a target, a bit like Lissandra Q. It’d deal significantly less damage but it’ll help getting his stacks on minions (or champion) without using his E
as an avarage kennen enjoyer and being on the way to become an OTP kennen i would love to receive a "mark effect" we had on a failed lebalnc rework. ur Q marks target (enemy champ or minion) and if it gets hit with same ability (Q) then it damages nearby targets for small amount and marks them with his passive that combined with his W would waveclear. so u get a waveclear without wasting ur mobility (E), but also that waveclear wouldnt be as fast thus ballanced because u are forced to wait Q cooldown. this would ALSO allow kennen to be little bit more useful in teamfights where ur ULT is on CD or when u got denied by any type of CC. i personally dont think that adding some type of dashes on kennen would be great even if we take some dmg out. it just feels kinda wrong. u are going to be AoE assassin which isnt fair imo. however adding his Q addition mark ive mentioned above would allow him become a little bit more effective on AoE which he is right now but without making him assassin that has dash, fast mobility via E + reduced dmg while its active. (fckn yone clone but AP)
If you make it to late game and focus AP you can crush team fights later, I love Kennen!

Neeko is another ranged champ who has a similarly shaped ult that requires her to be quite close to enemies. She also often builds rocket belt like vlad and kennen for this reason.

I know this video is a couple years old, but I started climbing like crazy with kennen. It’s like something clicked. Or I’m just in the elo where people don’t know how to handle him, since he is hardly played, and my winning will plateau.
Tbh I misuse your videos. I'm a bronze player and started with League at the end of last year. Your "Why noone/everyone plays..." gives great insight in what I may encounter in the Rift and then I already have a good idea of their strengths and weaknesses. So thanks for that :D
Phase Rush is kennen's best rune and fixes his problems.
you can't proc phase rush in a teamfight , it takes too much time to proc before you get the MS to run towards them and you need to use Q + W to proc it which further lowers your burst if you get on them and you also need to be in auto range to proc it which is dangerous . and it is predictable still because the enemy knows that you'll run to them when you have the proc of phase rush and have time to cc you as you come in , same problem , unlike when you have dash.

I think Vars idea to fix him is very good, before he said it I had thought of adding a dash to his ult before it starts, that way he can close the distance and also evade something like a Gragas ult or Thresh's E, I would even make him invulnerable during the dash so he can't just be kicked away by an Alistar before the ult hits, at least let him dash so he can put in some damage if Alistar kicks him out after the dash.
I used to play main top Kennen for around 2 years, he is the character I mained to longest and my first top main so he still a little place in my heart and I still sometimes play him. Before that I used to main support for 5 years.
I started to play him because I sucked at CS and wanted to try ranged if it helped. I picked him also for his share of crowd controls and I'm usually attracted to champions with very impactful ultimate and utility oriented playstyle. This reminded me of the gameplay of several support and I mostly play tanks top, so it gave me opportunity to play a more damage oriented champion.
The point of the video I want to underline is the items part, I like to be creative on my items but Kennen doesn't allow this at all. The fancier you could get usually involve loosing Hextech or Zohnya, which is terrible.
I agree with the fact that you could take away some damages to improve the quality of life overall (in items and/or gap closer)
i play kennen mid so i love baiting people into ballsy tower dives with their jungler and support and punishing it with slicing mealstrom. if you don’t have too much damage on the tower the enemy team popping rift herald might be the push they need to come right into your mealstrom-y arms, stunning them under tower and guaranteeing a kill on at least one of them

I think that aesthetic is a big part (for some of these) in why noone plays. If some characters had more generally cool/appealing themes they would be more picked I think.

Allowing players to optimize fairness and counterplay out of competition is effectively allowing them to optimize competition out of competition. And it's a classic study in a very common game design problem. If you allow players to optimize the fun out of a game they will.
Don't fix Canon, fix the rest of the game, or watch it die slowly. But we all know which one Riot's going to choose

I dont understand why is a lack of dash a problem. U go phase rush, celerity, E + protobelt and ur faster then their dashes. And you can avoid getting peeled by flanking or just waiting for the right opportunity. Also, his Two playstyles actually synergize well. Because u have the potential to kite the enemy and then turn on him and his team. + u are dive-resistant. Kennen is one of greatest picks if u know how to.

People really often play only melee champions what's allow kennen to buy night harvester. When you still go with a lot of burst ap items such as horizon focus, rabadon's deathcap then you can simply one shot enemies with your ult and don't have to care about surviving their damage. Untill you're catching them not expectating you.
Of course when they have champs like a vayne, tristana, alistar or lee sin they can really easily counter you. I like this champ because it teaches me what I can do in situations where something counters me.
I don't know what kennen needs. These dashes sounds pretty well but then it could be too op. Like you said it's just too balanced so doesn't need changes in my opinion.
When you're playing kennen phase rush makes you much stronger and i like to take taste of blood and ultimate hunter what's make me usefull more often. If someone want to discuss go ahead.

what if Riot would rework kennen E to instead being a movement speed buff , to turn it into 2 small fast dashes with 2 charges, so he actually feels like he'a lightning ball by teleporting around instead of being just faster. this way his mobility problem would be solved for the most part

@@viperdragon35lol6 yea, it just dosent feel right for his E to be a movement speed buff. im thinking a smaller version of Storm Spirit Ult from dota 2 where you can teleport around but with 2 charges and an ok distance and speed.

Local kennen main, you kinda indirectly mentioned this but to be clear, I think the biggest issue withe kennen is his inability to clear waves but his primary damage ability in lane is a skill shot that's blocked by minions. Unlike most of the ranged top laners, kennens primary damage ability isn't point and click so he has to actually punish mistakes rather than just Q mindlessly or auto. He CAN auto and point and click with W and W passive but you'll be dealing what like.... 120 damage? Compared to someone like vlad who is super linear and brain dead it's just not as easy to pub stomp lane.
He just needs a rework, keep the ult and the stun passive, but the rest of the kit needs revamp. He’s a ninja who doesn’t feel very ninjay... he need more on the lightning rush like a blink or dash (ninja like). His q feels very bland. And the W feels like a chore to manage. It might even be cool to be a ranged when far and melee when close champ. TLDR... Rework my champ please :,(
i played kennen pretty much, having around 75-80k points and mastery 7 rn, so far the highest problem i had are constant problems with energy especially when engaging, e wastes half of the energy and if you didn't hit anyone with it you are stuck instantly, especially that you have nothing to disengage if you didnt use ult or smthing else to hit a second stun, since first one just isnt long enough to put you into confirmed safety against half of toplaners. other than that hes pretty fun champion that just banishes any squishy champions without shields under towers and other places, punishes most ranged toplaners really hard
Neeko has a similar identity of long ranged autos and basic abilities and a short ranged mega impactful ult
As a kennen OTP. Kennen play style is like you described BUT, where his bread and butter is in his ability to position correctly for objectives so that the enemy team has to walk past him to engage simple E rocket belt makes short work of a full team. Kennen is a rough champ to even farm with. Since his AD ratio hit(Honestly i understand why it was hit on hit kennen was BUSTED) but now it makes his AP farming harder and the nerf to rocketbelt hurt our souls

Well that Was kinda badly researched, a lot of flaws from kennen could be applied to neeko, her ult also Puts her into danger and contradicts her nature as a frail Ranged champ, it also need external sources of engage
I mean everything you said about him just makes me remember neeko. She also is a ranged poke champ that has to go in to use her op R effectivly. But its super easy to dodge so she needs to have either flash or hextech
Now that I think about it they both have a stun empowered aa an ability that makes them faster and an aoe damage ult
theres also a huge amount of top laners compared to other lanes
i have mained kennen since season 3 and i think im the only person in the whole world to do so
