  • Walking through the steps of how to choose how to setup your plate planter for a sweet corn application. The steps for sweet corn would be the same for field corn, sunflowers, pumpkins, soybeans, etc as long as you can do this once you can do it for any crop. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the sprocket ratios between the drive wheel and box can be changed with different tooth sprockets if you are not reaching the desired spacing on your plates. This would change R1 in the equation. Hope this helps!

You can determine the rate of seed per 50 inches by raising the planter and rotating the drive wheel one revolution and catching the seeds dropped divide 50 by the number of seeds for space between seed drop.

Great video and all the info about gears and plates I wanted in one video! Thanks for sharing, I just bought a really old 71 planter and I am trying to refurb it and get it going good. Mine has the shoe plow on the bottom but I’m thinking about converting to disc openers. Any thoughts on that?

I have a planter just like yours, could you do another video explaining how to set the down pressure and planting depth on the planter? Thanks a bunch, I’m trying to learn as much as I can with the planter. I’m having trouble with mine planting doubles

For sure I can! I'm not an expert by any means but I talk about what we've done in the past and I'll address the doubles issue as well.
