The guy that taught me Machining name is Ken he used to mix up the main caps on us and the rod bearing caps and see which one of us can match the Caps back the fastest I was very good at doing this because you have to look at the party lines the factory honing in lines to be able to match things up very fastly the reason that he taught us to do this was a lot of customers would bring everything all mixed up that was no problem for our train crew we knew how to match the Caps back up to the rod & main by looking at the factory machine marks we had a lot of fun doing this Ken was a brilliant Machinist I'll add one more an old-timer walked in were heating up something to take a broken bolt out use paraffin wax instead of WD-40 that was amazing trick
Very very informative, I like the work that you do I'm thinking about running stock rod rebuilt rods in my small journal 302 drag race engine someone had rebuilt the rods in it before but a close inspection revealed the rods to be 283 rods and I'm not going to use them I'll be twisting this motor to 8500 to 8800 once in awhile and I am aware that these rods aren't the way to go but it's my thing

Very nice work. I have a question though, how do you maintain your rod center to center length? I have heard horror stories of small block Mopars from the 70's having rods that were .10 or more short straight from the factory. That would really affect compression.
You can also ? Pin the bearings to the rod? I believe to stop any chance of spinning a bearing. 327 like to rev Had a 388 once. With 565 rods. Pinned bearings. You guys do Nice work.
Back in the old days, we would weigh the pistons, pins, and rod assembly separately and move them around to get as even weight between all three as possible. That was preferable if the customer didn’t request a complete balance job. Also when you do a build do you check crank balance?
Cool video, curious though; with the relative low cost of new forged rods and their superior quality by the time a customer pays for new bolts and the labor to resize the rods have they actually saved any money? I mean for any sort of performance rebuild you would be rebalancing the rotating assembly anyway. Just seems like now days a new set of rods with floating pins, and a decent hypereutectic piston is an easy way to pick up a few HP, have more reliability especially on a 327 that has to wind to 6500 or more rpm to make any real power. I understand restoration work and the desire to maintain originality. But why wouldn't the customer just get new rods?
Wont aftermarket rods not influence the lubrication of the cylinder walls? Original GM rods had oil thrower tabs on the outer side (crank side of the bearing pocket) most aftermarket rods have nothing? Will I need to modify the rods with oil channels or the crank before use?
Like the video on the 327 rods. Question what rods are you using. There's two set of factory rods for the small journal motor. Would like to see more the 327 build. I have a 327 motor that's need to put together. I have a st of early pro comp aluminum heads I need to rebuild to complete the build. I'm going with a solid street roller cam. I'm going for 1964 spec with a 11.to1 compression. Turbo 350 trans with 3,500 stall. 4.11 gears.

Very hard to find those original small journal 302 rods without the oiling holes on the sides Bill Jenkins spoke highly of those rods because of the prep work that GM did on those rods at that time, they were heat treated and shot peened from the factory also there is some mention of the Chris craft 327 boat engine that has the small journal green rods which were supposed to be pretty good they had green splash paint on I beam part or on the big end of the rod just like the Lt -1 pink rods those boat engine rods might be some spin off of the 302 rod but used for that marine application

I had to find an new old stock set for a current build not an easy task. It’s to do an old school cheap stroker of a 350 to a 363 by offset grinding the crank 1/16” I did it with a Scat forged crank and some new old stock Manley forged 6” steel rods. I’d like to do it again but can’t find rods.
It's two to three tens of a thousands that's .0002 or .0003 out of round or taper we balance the small end first then the big end then the crankshaft and it rotating parts + the pistons.

Those 11/32" rod bolts for the small journal small block Chevy can be used as a cheap upgrade for small block Ford rods with minimal work.

I love seeing all these overheated small end rods. Throw some boost at that rod and it’ll break right at the edge of the haz.
I think the holes in the bench are for tapping in the rod bolts......😋

The best small journal rod had the last three in the part number, 145, and had a green paint code mark . I doubt you can get them new, maybe nos .

How does it get worn out if the bearings ain't even worn?
So rod length is very slightly changed? Depending on needs it could or not matter.
Can the small end be bored out of set to lengthen the rod again?

Hey Jim I got a old om617 in peices original owner didn't want to finish it. Now my question is he didn't mark the rods would I have to get new rods?
Just will require a bit closer inspection to make sure the correct cap is with the correct rod.
