Sonata Hybrid Check Charging System Problem 3

- This is after I pulled over with the alarm and lights, and shut it off and attempted to restart it. It did not restart until I let it rest a minute or two, then it allowerd me to restart it, but, shortly after the lights and alarm came back on.
The repair at the time included replacing the high voltage connectors and a Technical Service Bulletin was issued which applied a software update and I haven't had a problem since the repair, and I still own the car in 2020.
This is what the drivetrain engineer from Hyundai posted at the time which is what fixed my vehicle: There are now new campaigns TG5 to TG9 so make an appointment with your dealer and tell them you want all open campaigns done on your HEV.
If dealer tells you that you cannot do some of them due to part availability make sure you insist they do TG5 HEV Multi-ECU Update as this is most important so your car will not have the charge warning incident and loss of speed again.
It cannot be guaranteed you will ever have a warning light time will tell but if it does come on the vehicle will not shutdown as had occurred according to some reports on this site. As like any vehicle there are numerous reasons the light can come on due to the complicated OBD regulations so don't assume that in future if a light comes on that it means you have same issue.
It's also documented in this thread here:

sitting on side of road worth exact problem right now.
I don't blame hardworking folks who dare NOT touch any Kia or Hyundai vehicle. With the massive bill they shouldered from the engine failure/engine fire fiasco plus other major safety recalls, guess who will foot the bill eventually?
My 2013 Sonata Hybrid w/ 95k miles had similar alerts. Pulled over, reseated the battery connector and restarted with CEL illuminated. Drove to the dealership and they said the battery was reporting low voltage. They updated the software on the transmission and battery systems.
Hi, which battery connector did you re-seat? Was it the 12 volt battery in the trunk or the hybrid battery? And did the 12 volt battery need replacing?
I'm past 6 years now with the original 12 volt battery and it still tests great.
That's re-assuring to hear. I re-seated the rectangular hybrid battery connector in the engine bay to the right of the engine (on the 2013 model), I'm sure my re-seating of the connector didn't do anything of real use.
Be very careful around any of the orange cables, they carry 270 volts through them. Any time you need to work near them you should pull the fuse in the trunk for safety.
You still have the car ?,how's going
@@DAG42085 please I have my with this same problem I really don't know what to do again
Yes, there were numerous software rebuilds/updates back in November and the high voltage connectors were upgraded as well. I have over 9300 miles now and it runs fine. You should join the hyundai-forums website as there is lots of info there regarding this problem. Look under "check charging system" when you search the forum.

Just fixed my 2014 Hyundai Sonata hybrid. With mine it was the 12v battery in the trunk, nothing to do with actual batteries that are part of the hybrid system. I noticed this same thing happening that eventually led to a rare cold day in south Texas, then the battery crapped out luckily it was in my garage. Replaced the battery, cost 180.00 car been working great. Just to reiterate that battery had been causing all kinds of little bells and whistles going off in the car for months.
Yes, the 12 volt battery can cause some problems too. Here's a thread about it, I paid $127 for the battery out the door and it was an easy job to do myself.

No body tells us what the problem and how can we fix it
hello, my car Hyundai sonata hybrid 2011 has that problem, let me know, check the brakes, someone can help me and tell me that it could be the fault and how I can solve it, and I have gone to several workshops and they do not know the problems
Parking it and wait for 5 minuets before starting it up ... what works is to drive it using the shifting it like stick shift will cut it off while you’re driving 👈😊👍 I know this because I have the same problem but found a better solution to drive without turning it off .. your welcome people 👈😊👍 have a blessed day ..

My 2011 hybrid does this. But I don’t get any warning icons on my dash. Sudden surging forward while braking. Or no acceleration at all.

This happened to me but when i turned it back on it didnt have the warning and it worked perfectly fine for the whole day. It hasn't done it but I'm scared it will happen again.
same
It will
This is a ongoing problem, sold mine, it happened every 3 month, had to replace battery each time! It happened on the freeway too!
I had a 2013 sonata hybrid limited edition w/76,000 miles on it!
Another problem that has recently happened is that my car keeps making a squeaking noise anyone else?
Battery depletion status
That sound is wxtra traumatizing.
Did you fix yours?
My 2015 Sonata Hybrid had the same problem after an hour with accessory on. It was the almost-dead 12v battery.
Did u just change the 12v battery and everything was okay??
Please kindly reply to me.

I checked the 12v and it's now 10v

this is exactly what happened to my car. Did you find out what exactly causing this problem?
This happened in my RAV4 a few weeks ago. My alternator decided to die, but was replaced under warranty.
You put the video but never explained what’s the problem.
Read above
This happen to my car. Dealer says they have to replace HPCU and it will cost 5k. Don’t have that money. Only had the car 6 months. Bought used. Now I’m stuck with it and no idea what to do. Had 1 mechanic try to replace inverter. Still didn’t work. Not sure what to do at this point. Any advice?
They wanted to change my HPCU at first too, but software and high voltage connectors fixed my car. Maybe an HPCU from a wrecked Sonata hybrid would work for you to save a few dollars if that's what it really needs to be replaced.
It's a shame that this is still happening to people so many years into production.
A used one can be around $700-$800.
Check out the Sonata forums when you have time.

There recently was a TSB issued by Hyundai for the Sonata Hybrid. This TSB has made the car drive perfectly now and if you have a 2011-2012 Hybrid I strongly suggest you have it performed.

Hi I was wondering did you ever fix this problem because I have this problem now
Hi, yes it was fixed in 2011 and I have had no problems since. You can check out the forum links I posted to see what others have had done to fix this issue.
What was wrong with it because I don't see anyone that had it fixed
In my case, the software was reinstalled and the high voltage connectors were replaced. There were a bunch of people with similar problems on the Hyundai forum that I posted a link to that share their experiences as well.
sonatahybrid I didn't see any that said their problem was fixed
sonatahybrid did they charge you? im a second owner of my 2013 sonata and wonder if I'll still be covered
For me it was my battery. I suspected as much because the lights started going crazy.
I assume it was the 12 volt battery that you are referring to?
If it stops while the engine is on, probably the alternator. You can usually drive with a bad battery, you just won’t be able to start it without a jump.
@@sonatahybrid Hey ! The same problem just happed to me today. Bought the 2015 Hybrid 1 month ago, with 150k miles from the first owner.
While i was driving, i received a Warning saying ''Hybrid System Warning! Safety Stop and do not Drive''.
Then i received ''Check Charging System".
After a tried to Turn On the Vehicle again, i saw a Warning ''Battery Discharge Warning'' into the LCD Screen.
And finally, the lights started going crazy so i had to remove the 12v cable to shutdown the Vehicle.
Any tips pls?

You need to have any codes read with an OBD reader to start. It can be an issue with the 12 volt battery, but it needs to be tested. Look through this thread and see what others have done to fix it:
