death saves no longer exist after level 3 for my games. once you hit level 4, the encounters are just that much more deadly due to the threats being larger. narratively it may sound silly but this really works with how hp scales and whatnot.

I've borrowed and/or modified so many ideas from so many TTRPGs over the years, that I don't even remember if the ideas were mine or if I borrowed them. I no longer pay much attention to new versions, just any new ideas they may carry. Here are some rules I use.
Damage: I use "Wounds" (lethal), "Subdual" (nonlethal), and "Grit" (mental toughness). If you take enough damage of one kind, you may also take other types. "Grit" is used to represent damage from "Agony" weapons, those that overwhelm your senses, like a whip strike or something that tears the flesh or something else that might affect you mental stability; going to 0 might make you pass out or drop your weapons or flee, depending on the situation.
Weapons: I use a weapon keyword system to make weapons feel different, instead of just do different amounts of damage. These can grant you bonuses to attack or defend (yes, I use different values), or situational bonuses. Example: "Agony" as noted above. "Knife" provides a greater chance of "wounds" in the grappled or "On/on top" distance (Far, Near, Close, On/On top). This system also allows players to create their own custom weapons: An "Indestructible" "Long" "Heavy" "Hand and a Half" "Curved" "Serrated" "Sword".
Armor Saves: This is broken down by regions of the body (Head 1, Arms 1, Legs 1, Torso 1-3) and how well they cover (a multiplier from 1-3). Each also has durability, rolled on natural 0s and 20s or if used against weapons with specific keywords, like an Axe ("chopping") vs a "Wooden" shield (susceptible to "chopping").
Ammo Rolls: Roll d6 after each encounter. Lower Ammo value after each roll (starting from 6 or whatever you think is right). Roll within ammo value. Failed roll or rolling a 1 means you have d6 arrows left or flip X many coins, heads are the amount of arrow the player has left (and they have something you can easily get back from them).
I have many more, but this is already way too long. Thank you for reading!

IMHO, even 5.0 is too cumbersome. But then I started back in the "Basic" and "Expert" days. Dunno, I'd like a trimmed down version. But that's just me. Interesting ideas. Always good to see other POV. 🤓

Funny that you mention this. 5 Torches Deep is IMHO a trimmed down version of 5e but its missing some things that I liked about 5e. Honestly might have to make my own version lol.

@@HouseDM might be worth looking at the game into the unknown. It's a bit meatier than five torches deep with similar design goals.

Thought provoking vid. I like your ideas, especially the easy to find tables. Just to try to be first with this, I vote for calling it "E5E", for "'Evolved 5E"

Hah I haven’t heard that one yet! Whelp I’ll come back and check here if you’re right in 3 years!

They also need to make certain aspects optional. Such as death saves...I agree with you.

Like what if it was the default? And generating a new character didn’t take an entire session?

@@HouseDM I really have begun looking at rules light/OSR and Things like ICRPG. When it takes hours to build a character it's hard to let them go.
