thank you so much, Mr. Murphy, and what an honor for you to reach out :) I love, love, love your book and plan on using it heavily for reference for next couple episodes as we are covering the early, early stuff and first several 60's albums. Thank you again for your great work!

Great podcast on Brian's songwriting ability - the Beach Boys music is always there to fall back on however I feel. Their music is timeless and forever endearing. Have you heard the BBC All star cover of God Only Knows? I think that demonstrates just how special Brian's songwriting abilities are. Jim Murphy's book is fascinating and his collection of rare Beach Boys memorabilia is awesome. I have an acetate of the Today album which I never expected to find.

What fascinates me is why there are just a handful of composers who can not only write one or two or five memorable songs, but literally hundreds of them? Even well-known musicians are usually only capable of writing a handful of truly memorable melodies. Then you have people like Lennon, McCartney, Brian Wilson, Gordon Lightfoot, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and even ABBA and Jeff Lynne, who could seemingly just crank melodies out that people enjoyed hearing? Why do some melodies stick in your brain while others don't? I think it has something to do with the arrangement of notes that either does or doesn't register with our pleasure centers or register in the brain in however fashion we remember melodies. There are composers who have written hundreds of songs, many of the excellent, but how many of their songs are immediately memorable? You can hum them, and they make you feel good whenever you listen. Take people like Andrew Gold and Bob Seger and Ric Ocasek and Stephen Stills. They all wrote a lot of solid songs, but a limited number of truly memorable/magical ones. All amazing songwriters, but why don't they have 150 or 200 equally memorable tunes? Why do Paul McCartney's melodies immediately attract the listener, while Hall and Oates' music doesn't?

Brian Wilson I've thought has a little straw that leads to heaven and has some dew drops from heavsn which can't be explained and couldn't be bought with a trillion dollars just felt
As a plumber in LA I told a customer I was a bbs fan he said " you know Brian Wilson has breakfast every morning at the Beverly Glen deli " I looked it up and went there a couple times they said ya Brian was in here this morning that's his table
I never saw him but it's a good place for breakfast 😊
