Chip Jacobs is a bestselling author and journalist. His latest book is the Kafka-esque, true-crime caper The Darkest Glare: A True Story of Murder, Blackmail and Real Estate Greed in 1979 Los Angeles, which Kirkus Review praised as "engrossingly bizarre" and "entertaining." Jacobs' previous book was his debut novel, Arroyo, historical fiction set around construction of Pasadena's mysterious Colorado Street Bridge in 1913. It was a Los Angeles Times bestseller, a CrimeReads most anticipated book, and a medalist at the Independent Publishers Book Awards. Before them were the biography Strange As It Seems: the Impossible Life of Gordon Zahler (an Indies Book of the Year finalist) and the environmental social histories The People's Republic of Chemicals and the international bestselling Smogtown: the Lung-Burning History of Pollution in Los Angeles (the latter two with William J. Kelly). He has also contributed pieces to anthologies, among them the bestselling Los Angeles in the 1970s: Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine and Go Further: More Literary Appreciation of Power Pop. His prize-winning reporting has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, L.A. Daily News, CNN, The New York Times, Bloomberg, L.A Weekly, among others.

►WE USE THIS SOUND RECORDER (AMAZON) - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

Do you believe that being a writer is in our DNA?
I do. I always have. No different than for an athlete, a musician, etc.
I believe everyone is influenced by what their ancestors interests were. It’s in the blood.
It can be a natural talent, call it DNA, or fate. It is a matter of practicing of it to grow or remain forgotten.;)
No, I think your feelings do not equate to pseudoscience.
Writing in your DNA? Give me a break.
Writers are born but good writers are made.
Well, I am an orphan and I don't know who my parents were. But I'm so obsessed with writing, creating stories, characters. Soon my first book will be published and it makes me feel that I'm becoming closer to my parents I never know. ❤❤❤
Articulate people are born, funny people are born, people are born with rare skills that make becoming a writer easier.
The truth is always complicated
The question about DNA is fascinating to me. I absolutely love to write and it appears that I am good at it. My essays receive a lot of attention and comments on Facebook. I was 10 years old when I won a writing contest in my local newspaper; it took me only a half hour to write it. Nevertheless, I was a professional actress for many years, even though I knew that I wasn't in my right place in life. So, I am finally undertaking a writing career, although I'm in my seventies. I'm a dramatist, so I'm writing for the stage and for film. By the way, I have two blood relatives who were highly successful writers: Carlene Polite and Toni Morrison. So, maybe this theory about DNA is correct. This guy has given me something to think about. Wish me luck.
It's never to late to take up the pen--thank you for proving it to the rest of us, some of whom might hesitate to start later in life. Best of luck to you!❤
Creativity is fun. Writing is about imagination and creating inspiration for the generations to come.
Yes, my dad was a writer and a story teller. And I got that from him. But that's only 1% of the deal.
Just discovered this thought-provoking video on the nature of writing and its connection to an individual's inherent abilities. As the author speaks, I'm reminded that perhaps some people are indeed born with a natural inclination towards writing, but it's equally important to acknowledge the value of hard work and dedication in honing one's craft. Looking forward to checking out the author's books, especially 'Arroyo: A Novel' and 'The Darkest Glare'!
Loved this thought-provoking video! Chip Jacobs makes a compelling case for the importance of innate talent in writers. I particularly resonated with his discussion on the role of serendipity in shaping one's creative path. Excited to check out his books, including 'Arroyo' and 'The Darkest Glare'!
Yes! Chip is awesome.
Likewise!
The people who are very talented will say it’s in their DNA, the people who aren’t that talented will say it’s just something you can learn. You can hone your basketball skills but unless you were born with the right body, you’re not gonna become an NBA player.
My dad isn't a writer but he's a storyteller and played a little drums when he was young. My oldest brother is an award winning journalist and so is his oldest son. Another one of my brothers is a historian/veteran writing his first historical fiction book. I've always been a writer, artist and a drummer.
Thanks for sharing Dustin!
I'm a natural-born writer, but a lot I have to attribute to weekly church services and hearing biblical stories told to me all the time.
Same here. I get most my story ideas from the Bible. I’m writing four features a year and I have yet to experience being stuck. I have so many ideas in various stages of development it’s going to take the rest of my life to write them all.
Not sure. My first thought is reincarnation, as implausible as that seems to some people. There are a lot of kids who come into the world with talents far ahead of the curve that contains the majority of their peers. I was born a writer but I can't trace it to my parents, grandparents, or other relations. I knew my alphabet by 2, was writing words by 4 in an age before pre-k and in an area with no kindergarten. I've been writing ever since. Something is definitely up but whether it's DNA that potentially skipped a couple generations, a previous life as a writer, or something else....it's fun to speculate!
Yea my dad is a writter and I started writing short stories from the age of 7.
Thank you for posting! It's amazing how many writers we speak with who started at a really early age.
There’s something distinct in me that lead me to writing. But sometimes I think, I’m a talentless painter or sculptor that only has words.
He seems awesome!!!
Yes indeed! We had a fun time with Chip!
It's just practice, like most things.
No one is born as anything. I’m tired of all the “gift” people. TALENT IS CHEAP.
You’re no more a born writer than a born surgeon, engineer or plumber.
Hard work is hard. Your environment is as important as your parentage. Luck is a factor in everything.
Even a genius ask his questions .
"everyone is creative" is just a fashionable line peddled by those who know there's more money to be made by saying this
Not only do I believe some are born with natural talent but some people are born with no talent to write but think it’s so easy.
I disagree . You had to be informed and then taught , take off the training wheels and hone whatever it is that you intend to do .
Personally, I don't believe in talent. I think everything is a skill; if you have the desire to learn, you can master anything you want. What we call talent is simply the unconscious realization of the emotional support one receives in pursuing a skill.
Mozart wasn't born a musical genius but he was born in a musical family, was exposed to music very early and was a constant part of his life. He was probably a genius iq-wise but had he been born a pauper, he would have no chance in becoming a legend that he is today.
No one is born playing basketball but certain people are born with the DNA that will give them an advantage over 99.9 percent of the population. That is a kind of talent. Same can be true with art. Some are born with a mind more capable for certain kinds of art. And then there are a thousand other factors. Mostly exposure and practice. Still there are people who are far above others.
