  • Are car makers really giving up on EVs and redirecting their efforts back to ICE (internal combustion engines)? There is much confusion over a recent announcement by Japanese giants Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda confirming their joint commitment to continuing the development of ICE.
    The trio is developing innovative carbon-neutral internal combustion engines (ICE), but what is really going on here? In this video, we break down the release and analyse the motor industry trend towards diversifying the future of mobility.
    These car makers are banking on ICE technology to integrate with electric drive units and utilise various carbon-neutral fuels such as e-fuel, biofuels, and liquid hydrogen. And they're not alone.
    Is this a global trend? Are manufacturers hedging their bets? Is even China jumping on the new octane-powered bandwagon? Stay tuned to get all the insights on how Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda are leading the charge towards a carbon-neutral future while preserving the unique driving experiences of ICE vehicles.

    We need oil to make plastics and other essential products so it makes sense to continue to use ICE technology in some form

    A couple of the issues with these proposals. Liquid hydrogen has to be stored at minus 250C to keep it liquid and to make 1 energy unit of hydrogen you need 3 units of electricity to make it!.
    E fuels will be very expensive compared with normal petrol, which is fine for Porsche owners but not for most ICE owners.

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w 4 місяці тому

      You're right, but the likes of Porsche are smart. Towards the end of last year the German makers got exemptions from the upcoming EU ban on ICE for ICE cars that run on synthetic fuels. Remember that if a car runs on synthetic fuel it also runs on petrol without modifications! So they actually got an exemption for all ICE cars! They will sell you an ICE car to run on synthetic fuel that you can immediately fill up at the petrol station! How long before the EU catches on? Who knows. But the EU's negotiators are clearly not very bright.

    Also, consider the collaborations that those three manufacturers currently have with other makers. Just off the top of my head, you have the Suzuki Swace, which is a badge-engineered Corolla estate, you have the Toyota Supra, based on the BMW Z4, and you have Stellantis' Fiat 124, based on the MX-5. And I note that BMW has been testing hydrogen-fuelled cars maybe longer than Toyota has. So, now add up the worldwide market share of all six companies and it's even more significant. And, as said, BMW and Toyota have a shared long-term interest and significant investment in hydrogen technology, which I'm sure neither wants to abandon.

    32:22 even Stellantis are backing off EVs. I.e. the Citroen C4X and Citroen's commercial cars fleet as Berlingo, Jumpy etc were announced to go pure EV. But now suddenly you can order all of these again as pure petrol and diesel. Same with the brand new C3, it is available as pure petrol. When Lancia's re-launch was announced, it was said its going to be a pure EV brand. Now they have confirmed a hybrid version of their new Ypsilon and a pure petrol is rumoured.

    Makes sense therefore it will be difficult to convince our remarkably stupid politicians that pure EV's are not the answer in any shape or form

    Thing is… cars are sold on a global market. Surely, there must be large parts of the World (Asia, Africa, Latin America) which cannot afford to 'go electric' or would find it impracticable.

    I fully agree that the infrastructure is the issue re EVs, 70% of owners can charge at home but for the rest there is no financially viable or logistical solution. The Japanese are the most vulnerable when it comes to oil, in times of war (Taiwan) that will be the first thing they will loose. They should be doing the exact opposite of what they're doing. The fact is that the realization of global climate change should have put us on a global war footing to allow us to make the transition away from fossil fuels. We've made this bed and now we are going to lie in it.

    In the last few months Toyota has championed hydrogen, 600 mile battery tech, 6 new EVs by 2027, and now this. All their main markets have adopted the 2035 mandate. They are just stalling.

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w 4 місяці тому

      @@oneeyedgirl617 We'll see. 2035 is totally unworkable at the current rate and level of technology, unless you're prepared to allow humanitarian disasters unrelated to climate change that mother nature would struggle to compete with and simultaneously destroy Western economies. Although, ideologues may well allow or want such. As far as Toyota and co's biggest markets currently, those markets are already under threat, no matter what products are offered, and well led companies will see this and be looking to satisfy the vast needs of developing economies with huge energy needs that only fossil fuels can satisfy, and huge increasingly prosperous populations both needing and wanting to be mobilized. Toyota and co's future may well be secured by looking to their post-war past. Ultimately, what Toyota and co are saying, and btw both European and American automotive CEOs are saying similar things, is that they are not prepared to be silent or passive when effectively told to commit commercial suicide by ideologues. Whatever the motives of the ideologues, these mandates threaten the Western economy and millions of lives. Real science simply must prevail, and only large corporations like Toyota can push back against the rise of corporatism.

      @@oneeyedgirl617 Those targets won't be met, already in the first year of such mandates. More likely, this year, companies will pre-register their own stock. The targets aren't sustainable. The response isn't sustainable. The alternatives aren't sustainable. The makers are facing oblivion. Of course, they're fighting to reverse these mandates. I hope you really have two eyes so you have the option of not being so one-eyed.

    • @oneeyedgirl617
      @oneeyedgirl617 4 місяці тому

      @@nigel.w so, you see all this, and think policy will be reversed. Good luck with that. I see disruption happening now. Diesel sales cratering, dealerships closing. I see some great finance deals on new cars coming, and used EV sales on par or cheaper than ICE. If nothings changes politically at the top level, and I believe it won’t, some OEMs will go and deserve to go the way of the horse. They stood and watched Tesla and the Chinese and did nothing for years. And are years behind in technological terms. Sub £20k new EVS are now beginning to appear. Just a few years ago you only had the Leaf and Zoe.

    This isn't news is it? Japan has a big problem with switching to full electric vehicles, issues which are unique to Japan as a leading high-tech nation. Car makers in Japan are floundering and worried. Anyone who believes carbon neutral fuels are the way forward are in for a shock when they pay at the pump for it.

    • @Ifitwerks
      @Ifitwerks 4 місяці тому

      Carbon neutral fuels will come down in price with the economy of scale and tech advancement just as EVs have done. If it works for EVs its the same for new fuels.

      Cars designed for petrol will currently run on synthetic fuel without modifications. Therefore, cars designed for synthetic fuel will run on petrol without modifications. And towards the end of last year the German makers got exemptions from the upcoming EU ban on ICE for ICE cars that run on synthetic fuels. So they actually got an exemption for all ICE cars! They will sell you an ICE car to run on synthetic fuel that you can immediately fill up at the petrol station!
      Moreover, there are still huge economically viable reserves of oil, and when reality and actual science collide to prove that ICE technologies can make ICE lower emitters than EVs, that oil production has less environmental impact than battery production and renewable energy, and that it is currently impossible to generate anywhere near enough electricity for current needs from renewables, the current direction will have to change, just as many manufacturers that were quickly ditching ICE production in favour of EVs are now reversing course.
      Regarding the cost of synthetic fuel, the price will of course come down, but the current reality is there's no chance of producing enough. Regarding price shock, many people have been happy to pay double for EVs that aren't cheaper to run if you are using public chargers or in reality lesser emitters. And if you charge at home, how many years does it take to offset the higher purchase price of an EV?
      IMO, the Japanese aren't floundering. They may well be worried that the rest of the world seems to ignore logic, science, and reality, and is currently headed for humanmade humanitarian disasters that have nothing to do with climate change that even nature would struggle to compete with.

      @@nigel.w These days, a lot of fuel is up to 10% ethanol, with it’s source being things like animal grade wheat in the UK, or sugar cane in Brazil. And there in S America many of them can run on a lot more than 10%.
      There have been manufacturing processes that can produce fuel from sources other than oil. Not necessarily economic, but done at times of war with no conventional supply, such as the pyrolysis of timber and other carboniferous compounds.
      Then again, although this is mainly about petrol engines, is it possible to make fuel for diesel engines from “renewable” sources, like vegetable oil.
