Suikoden is the Japanese name for a very old Chinese novel, Shui Hu Zhuan, which translated into English means Water Margin (or Outlaws of the Marsh or All Men are Brothers). The games, like the novel, centers around the ‘108 Stars of Destiny’ each of which you recruit to form the foundation of your ‘rebel’ army as you fight to liberate the fictional nation each game is set in. (Most of the games are mostly traditional JRPGs, not tactics games, with the exception of Suikoden Tactics) A quick summary: The original novel the games are based off of is a tragic story, set in the Northern Song dynasty (around 1120) in China, which tells of how a group of 108 outlaws gather at Mount Liang (or Liangshan Marsh) to rebel against the government. Later they are granted amnesty and enlisted by the government to resist the nomadic conquest of the Liao dynasty and other rebels.
As people will mention elsewhere, this game isn't exactly a fan favourite- and fair enough, it made a lot of decisions people didn't ask for. But I grew up on games like this rather than earlier ones in the series, and the absolute vibe of the game makes it feel a lot more clear-cut and vibrant than some of the previous games. Every time I booted it up, I'd let this theme play all the way through, because it really was a great way to set the mood. Cheers for this one.
It's been sometime when I listen to this damn to nostalgic really hits hard ive played lots of jrpg and rpg games and it's hard to keep track on all them good songs this really brings back nostalgic memory
I've never played Suikoden (maybe one day), but I've heard a few different songs from the series and have enjoyed them all. This one was new to me and another hit! If you want more VGM with accordion I just want to mention Love's Vagrant (or Vagrant of love) from Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. It was also played live and vocalized in the same concert as Serpent eating the horizon that you reacted too. Sadly I can't find an isolated video of it anymore :( But the in-game song is good fun anyway!
Suikoden IV is a pretty fun game. Its setting is an island nation so it's a very ocean-centric game and as you spotted that bleeds into the music a lot too. IV is sort of the black sheep of the series. It was the first Suikoden to be made without any involvement from Yoshitaka Murayama who had directed the first 3 games (he left Konami just before III's release) and While not a bad game, a lot of people consider it their least favorite in the series, mostly because it took some risks that weren't generally well received. Most notably the party size (usually 6 in other Suikodens) was reduced to 4 members and the game had an ocean-based world map that was slow to move through and had a high random battle rate. It also was the most disconnected from the rest of the series as it was a prequel set over a century before any of the other games in a part of the world that was barely if at all mentioned in previous games. That said, the story still does some pretty cool things and it has some neat additions to the lore of the universe as a whole.
I’ve played all the mainline games except 2, as well as Tierkreis. So bear in mind I can’t say anything about 2 or the other side games. Personally I like 4 more then 3, due to the story of 3 feeling to me like it drags on forever before you get the True Fire Rune. I will admit that 1 and 5 were better then 4 gameplay wise though (I liked 4 and 5’s stories better then 1 and 3’s).
@@doscuramenos I love I and IV from a story perspective. I love the story for V, but I felt as though the characters were hit and miss. I wouldn't say that it had a better storyline than IV, but because it was longer it was able to be expanded upon more. Both premises in my opinion were equally as appetising. IV also had hit and miss character for me. I love the start up to the middle of the story for Gensou Suikoden IV, but I didn't like the last half as much as I could feel the rushed aspect coming in and it felt too short. I think that IV played mostly fine and while I think that the combat wasn't as good as II and V, I prefer its combat to III, but I think that III had the best minigames. For me IV had fun things to do on the side and I put it up there in that aspect of the gameplay. The encounter rate for IV and V were disappointing, but I think that IV being set in the ocean did hurt it in that aspect slightly more although once having access to Viki, it isn't that bad. I think that the pacing for the original Gensou Suikoden is what makes it great story wise. The music by Miki Higashino cannot be underestimated either. For me, the second game was by far the best, but I put III behind it and I, IV and V behind that. I think that the second game while not being the best at everything was the most balanced all round.
@@doscuramenos There are things that we agree and disagree on. Two points that I must mention though. Murayama in an interview said that the story for II didn't come first. The other thing is that the original is my equal favourite with II, but I just don't rate it as highly from how the game plays.
@@doscuramenos I think that for one of the Suikoden Days, that is where Murayama got interviewed about it and he debunked the idea that Suikoden II's story came first. The original is my favourite because of Tir Mcdohl and the rest of the cast. It was the first Gensou Suikoden game that I played and I loved the adventure. For me, the gameplay to III outside of combat was fantastic which is why I rate the gameplay of III, but if I were to just go by the combat of III for gameplay, then I would rate it much lower. I also think that Gensou Suikoden as a franches is amazing. It is the only Role Playing Game franchise where I have completed all of the main entries.
Suikoden IV is the only game in the series I played and I enjoyed it. It is rather clunky in combat and quite a lot of other things have issues but looking past that it can be alright :D Not to mention the MC has the most powerful rune in the entire series so you know, thats badass.
If you liked the style with castanetas and acordion i recomend pretty much any song made by Tomohito Nishiura who is the composer of Dark Cloud (one of my favorite games, action/adventure with a bit of village building) and professor layton (really good puzzle game)
Oh god I love that game was my first Suikoden and i never imagined hearing la mer on that channel lots of love for the ones suggesting it 😘 Fuck my ps5 i play it again on my Pink ps2 😍
Suikoden IV is my least favorite of the series, though I actually like it a lot and probably more than most Suikoden fans, but regardless La Mer is absolutely lovely and matches the visual themes extremely well. The only Suikoden intro song I prefer to it is Transcending Love from Suikoden III, the vocals in that just take me to another world.
Ahh Suikoden 4... that game equivalent of my hot take. I loved this game to death back in days when it came out... only to go online later and find out most people generally don't like it. Regardless, it has a special place in my heart. If you enjoyed Suiko4's opening, you ought to look up Suiko3's opening theme 'Exceeding Love.'
The first Suikoden you did was a request on my behalf, for the Opening Music for Suikoden 2. Four is largely regarded as the weakest in the series gameplay wise, but it did/does have excellent music. The last full game that came out was Suikoden 5, outside of a few side stories. But yeah - 4 is very much set on the ocean - the story spans an archipelago and the large scale combat is mostly naval, vs the other games large scale 'army' fights being set on land.
Say, do you also react to mobile game music? There's this game called "Choices: Story you play" and their musics are so diverse that one can easily pick any songs to make a Top 10 🥰
Suikoden 4 is likely the least fave but imo has the darkest plot narrative with how it's "Rune of Punishment" works. I am avoiding elaborating to not spoil people.
Lot of really good musical themes from Suikoden. Definitely check out "Determination" and "Life or Death" from Suikoden V, as well as "Blade" from Suikoden III and "Gothic Neclord" from Suikoden II
UA-cam kinda deleted my commented (probably because I linked a site). What I said in the other comment is that the accordion is performed by coda (Yasuhiro Kobayashi) which seems to a be a somewhat famous Japanese musician, he have its own site that I will not link this time :)
Suikoden is a great jrpg series. It was the one that makes me think ff is not the best nack in the day. For me, despite the bugs (and one bloody useless time specific quest...) suikoden 2 is up there with chrono trigger. It s a serie crimknally underated and another victim of fukonami. Also the dev are launching another game by crowd funding: eiyuden chronicle or qomethkng like that. I m waiting for it like i waited from cyberpunk 2077.
This song is the best thing about a thoroughly mediocre game. I get the sense that this game suffered because the creator of the series left in the middle of production during Suikoden III and the team didn't know what they wanted to do with IV. I'm surprised that someone requested this song before better known tracks, like Into A World of Illusion, given the bad reputation of this installment.

Close! "La mer" means "the sea" in French. You should definitely check out Suikoden, it's so great
@@lanonyme-vod8090 not suikoden 4 though lol, suikoden 2 is one of the must play jrpg ever
I remember making a comment for this song a while back. Glad to see you got to get a listen to it.

It's the worst of the 5 BUT it's not bad least how i look at it
It's like a fusion of Spanish and French music... Or maybe Parisian music specifically? Parisienne? Whatever the word for relating to Paris is >__
