To all the people who are acting smart on the comments... This video session is to help you to start with.....You ain't no Quentin Tarantino to do what you like....you should know the rules to break the rules... I loved the session and was very helpful Thanks a lot :)
I'd like to add to what Vibha has said..... Guys, those are putting on negative comments, under what is acting as a school of learning right now, you need to be ashamed of yourselves. You definitely are not showing signs of a good student. A good student never judges his teacher just on the basis of his appearance. They have such knowledgeable stuff that I am pretty sure, half of these guys won't even know. Go to any film school, get ripped out of yoyr budget and listen to the same thing, if that's what make you happy. But if you are here to learn, be a student guys. Remember, these guys are where you are still not and with this attitude, can never be. So, empty yoyr cups that are filled with such negativity and let some positive learning come in. Be thankful to what chance of learning you guts are getting.
Well, thank you so much. These are the people who get roles in the industry just bcoz they are related to someone. Why I said all that is because despite being talented, I haven't gotten any chance to prove myself. May be it was the inner want speaking but hey, no matter what, a teacher is a teacher.
1. Don't pay too much attention to details 2. Write the dialogues as it is not formal 3. Consider the objects that you have access to for filmmaking 4. Consider the locations that you can shoot your film 5.a cheap movie is never fast and a fast one is never cheap 6. Always write your script to see the whole image 7. 4 things you should do for actors : feed them , pay for the gas , pay them credit , give them a copy of the film 8. Good pre production leads to saving dollars 9. Sometimes actors can't deliver the lines but they show the emotion 10. Good Film = good story , good acting , good production 11. The quality of the camera is important
I'm a nurse , no background in film making. This is so interesting, it gives me hope I can fulfill my dream of writing and directing a short film. Not to make money, to have fun and tell a story..
This was the first ever coarse I have watched, and I expected to click off after like 10 minutes. I was so intrigued after five minutes! Thank you so much for making my situation feel normal. I am so excited to go and try to make more short films now! I really appreciate you guys for doing this, and I hope that you really know how much so many people appreciated this!
short films and long films are two different nature, short films are different in their own ways, please learn about short films if you want to make short films and not about films if you want to make short films.
To be honest the most important aspect of the film is the story, and will always be the story. Think of it this way, the lecture may be filmed badly, but it's the content that matters-it's the story-and I think it was kinda impractical to bring full equipment on this venue. I'm pretty glad that I've watched this lecture; I've learned so many things. Best regards.
I think I agree with that. for instance, the film dancer in the dark wasn't filmed very well, perhaps because of low budget, but the story and the feelings they give you in the film because of the plot are still powerful and meaningful, ones that will make you remember the film. I also feel that Bjork acting as the main character in the film had to do with it giving deep emotions too though, because I really don't think the film would have been the same withought her. she did a phenomenal job acting, and really expressed amazing emotion in parts that were probably the most difficult. in fact, I think the scenes she acted best in were the most difficult ones.
I disagree, The most important aspect of the film is the intent of the film, Something like fantasia there is little to no plot for the overall movie, that show was more about the matching of the fantastic animation and music, in a musical the story plays second seat to the music numbers and only serves as a way to link the songs in the basic since of the genera, In character drama the story or plot play second seat again as the focus is on the characters and not so much the story (think breakfast club) So the most important part of a film or what ever medium is the focus of your project.
hard disagree, the beauty of whatever art lives in the rampant and chaotic creative explosion detonated by the expression of the artist’s will, which in this case is the director

Very informative video. Forget all the negative comments from people that have nothing to offer but negativity, and asinine remarks. If all you can base your negative comments on is lighting and sound. You are missing much of the valuable content in this video. Really! Any idiot knows you can't show a slide show or a projector with bright lighting. This just a lecture. Everything begins with the basics. If you don't learn that then you'll probably learn a few tricks, but you'll never become a master of anything. If you already know all of this, then I see no need to make disparaging comments. Just move on and let others try to expand their knowledge.
*You can't make a good and cheap movie faster" That's a pretty impressive and smart thing. He has not only got talent and experience, had a great philosophy.
On the topic of editing, have your students to view 'How Star Wars was saved in Editing'- here of course. The differences in Lucas' vision verses that of a talented, seasoned editor, is mind-blowing. In retrospect, visiting something that made history (for some), to now know the original vs the final cut as we know it, is to know editing at its best for the genre. There are high-budget movie flops where amateurs fix bwo simple editing. It is amazing that studios do not revisit their even-bill productions and revisit using this Rule-of-6 in such a way to warrant a soft re-premier or on something like Netflix or like services. There are plethora of great movies out there that only failed due to poor marketing; these deserve a soft re-premier as well.
I'm using 3ds max to storyboard the film. its time consuming but you can play with cameras, lighting, sets and animated characters. such a good tool for pre-viz.
Anyone complaining about anything in this instruction is missing the point. This is about learning the basis, really kills me when people criticizes when they have not accomplished anything.
I thought this video really helped me out. I'm an independent filmmaker, a lot of what was talked in here, was somewhat new, but some of it I already knew. But it never hurts to refresh your memory on these types of subjects. Thanks for posting.
i love youtube learning! i just got into ai filmmaking and figured this would be a good starter video for me on the basics! im using storyboarding as a great tool to structure things and keep it focused basically i just generate black and white images in SD and then use that to figure out what each scene i want to be, fun!

Take a list of your resources and people's resources you could use, and keep a notebook for actors/actresses that you meet or people that would be great to be in your film. I've started this, such awesome advice!
This is really important. for CAMERA/VIDEO men/women. When video or filming a guitarist playing, don't zoom in on the right hand picking and strumming, if you have to zoom in at all, get the actual left hand playing the chords and leads. There are so many BAD film and video of novices showing the players face, the wrong hand and just plain awful coverage. I say this because guitarists and those who watch guitarists love to see their favorite players filmed doing the real cool part of making music, and if that is caught correctly on video and film, it is very magical. So, just offering that to those who are new and have no clue about what to focus on, it is the hand and face both if possible, playing the leads and not just the face or the strumming hand, boring stuff. Just some thoughts on it.
I'm paraphrasing but John Truby said that the single worst advice for new screenwriters is to follow and learn the 3-act structure. Celtx does not appear to have a free version. On their web site they offer a 7 day free trial. There is no mention of a free version. Am I missing something? Also Adobe Story is set to be discontinued in January 2019. It would be nice if they offered a downloadable version which would run on my desktop.
i'm an aspiring videographer... my dream is to be a videographer of weddings, debuts or occasions! and i would love to make shortfilms.. as a part of multimedia ministry in our church, i'm digging any informations that could help me to improve my filmig skills :) and what course should i get to be a filmmaker? please reply, is it mascom?
Interesting chat, this guy makes some good points, for instance, when he mentions to allow actors to put in there own in-put or change a line or two or the action if it works better. Though I wish he would echo the voices of those people in the lecture that mumble so we could hear what they mumbling about.
This may have to do with an intricate matter, but most big studios and tv shows have a ‘legal team or lawyers' behind the production for various reasons, but one thing to mention is of importance. Using something as simple as Happy Birthday, Joy to the World or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is sometimes not possible as you will be held liable for using the song or object such as a Rubik's Cube in a murder scene for instance is not so easily attainable.
Really wanna thank you alot for sharing such a huge experience, cuz I'm into writing a short one and I really want it to be as good and cheap as possible, so really thanks again for sharing that and thumbs up guys...
Excellent video. I am just starting out and I hope I can get a question to Tony. At the 56:09 mark you show a sequence you shot to describe the 180 degree rule. Can I ask how you shot that sequence? i.e. was it three of four different cameras all shooting at once? How would you suggest a person starting out with a 'one camera budget' achieve a shot like this? Thanks for your time.
This teacher advices people to use the 3 time structure, my so-called helpers say "it's not kosher." But, it was used before the Counter-City strategy, we have to examine the pro's and con's in this teacher and I'll give you my input. Lisa

Always been curious on what the process and how passionate you have to be make such great movies

I'll remember this piece of advice. Thanks for dropping some free knowledge.
So true
I'm paraphrasing but John Truby said that the single worst advice for new screenwriters is to follow and learn the 3-act structure. If you follow the 3-act structure, your story will most-likely become like all the other stories out there and very predictable/cliche'. (Because it's been done a million times before). If you want to learn how to avoid the 3-act structure and garuntee originality, then read his book, "Anatomy of a Story". Fantastic read! To give you an idea on how good it is, I wrote my first screenplay ever following his advice and it got noticed and read by the likes of Bryan Singer and Fritz Weaver. It was remake of 'The Obsolete Man" from the Twilight Zone. Look at my channel for the teaser-trailer of the film based on my screenplay. All because I refused to 'go with the flow' and follow the 3-act structure.
I will look into this book cause i don't like doing what everyone does. thanks.
Thank you! will have to check this out.
The problem with the 3 act structure is that you end up with a big clunky middle. Really you can have as many "acts" as you want- the 3 act structure is just so fucking primitive.
Christopher Nolan is a great example of not following the 3-act structure and producing great films like memento, dark night, and inception
Ron Howard in his MasterClass says a good method is more like 10 minute 'chapters' with each having a beginning, middle and end, always pushing the story along :)
Currently in school for machining, but I think I’d much rather get into filmmaking.

Celtx does not appear to have a free version. On their web site they offer a 7 day free trial. There is no mention of a free version. Am I missing something? Also Adobe Story is set to be discontinued in January 2019. It would be nice if they offered a downloadable version which would run on my desktop.
Wow super excited

Interesting chat, this guy makes some good points, for instance, when he mentions to allow actors to put in there own in-put or change a line or two or the action if it works better. Though I wish he would echo the voices of those people in the lecture that mumble so we could hear what they mumbling about.
Thank you sir 💫🌿
This is magnificent 101 filmmaking, want learn directing and written
This may have to do with an intricate matter, but most big studios and tv shows have a ‘legal team or lawyers' behind the production for various reasons, but one thing to mention is of importance. Using something as simple as Happy Birthday, Joy to the World or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is sometimes not possible as you will be held liable for using the song or object such as a Rubik's Cube in a murder scene for instance is not so easily attainable.
These classes are awesome

Excellent video. I am just starting out and I hope I can get a question to Tony. At the 56:09 mark you show a sequence you shot to describe the 180 degree rule. Can I ask how you shot that sequence? i.e. was it three of four different cameras all shooting at once? How would you suggest a person starting out with a 'one camera budget' achieve a shot like this? Thanks for your time.
