If he was feeling especially fancy he'd grill some chunks of corned beef in with the toast and mash. I can't comment on the taste myself as I've never tried it, but my dad always served it with a thick mug of tea and with especially thick slices of bread (usually uncut loaves). He really enjoyed them.

A favorite of mine is a meat and cheese toastie; Bread (i use Wholemeal), Marmite on one side with Lurpak (Invented in 1901) and Peanut-Butter on the other side (no Lurpak (invented in 1901), salami (cut slices into quarters with corners matching), ham same as Salami, cheese (i use Old English), tomato. Cooked in a sandwich press till cheese is melted and bread is toasted to desired level ( light caramel brown toasted colour for me) slice Rectangularly (Of course) and enjoy.
My favourite sando is slices of tinned luncheon meat with a thin layer of marmite over the top, with a layer of cheese and then pickle on top of that! Pure delight!
I eat some weird things. However this is off to me. Even now as well as my childhood. I eat three sandwiches that others think are gross. Sorry no spreadable butter involved in the making of any of them. 1 is a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Peanut butter of both slices of bread with banana in between. 2 is a peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich. Made the same way but with marshmallows instead of bananas. Sometimes both in one depending on mood. 3 is a peanut butter and pickle sandwich. Mayonaise on one slice of bread. Peanut butter on the other with pickles in between. I prefer a sweet pickle but dill works as well. Pickles can be sliced lengthwise or in round. Eaters preference. Thanks for having such fun with sandwiches ideas.

Two strips of beer battered chicken with mashed potatoes, lightly buttered and lightly salted in between. Not much of a sandwich, but it's a soul food treat. Much love, from Montana.
Coconut egg jam/coconut jam spread on bread, both slice. Lays a cuts of babana on one bread and add slice of cheese on top of the banana, add the last slice and bake for 1-2 minute(s). Done!
I LOVE banana sandwiches with mayonez! I grew up eating them. Probably one of my favourite sandwiches, ever, but I've never used butter on it.
My favourite sandwich combo, Thick Ham, Sage and Onion stuffing, Boiled Egg sliced, English Mustard (to taste) and of course seasoned with Salt & Pepper
Lightly toasted white bread with thinly sliced black forest ham and ranch dressing. Haven’t named it yet but been eating them for years.
I'm late to finding the channel, but please keep doing these, they're absolutely fantastic! (for us, not for you guys, of course, ya'll are gonna be reliving some food trauma for a while lol).
I'm boring, i like a traditional PB&J, with some cheddar (or spicy) cheese on the side
Next level. Banana, peanut butter, ketchup & sharp cheddar. Toasted in pan until cheese melts.
"Sliced banana..."
'Oh, that's not bad.'
"And Mayonnaise"
'Oh... uh... what?'
I have been eating peanut butter, banana & mayo sandwiches since I was a kid and at 57, still enjoy a few a year. I'll even pan fry in butter if I have time!
Scrambled egg with chives, salt, NO PEPPER. On bread with preferred butter, topped with fresh strawberry jelly, ideally the freeze-jam kind. (Not British hard sugar-jam, boiled to death.)
Enjoy.

Cooked in a sandwich press till cheese is melted and bread is toasted to desired level ( light caramel brown toasted colour for me) slice Rectangularly (Of course) and enjoy.

Sandwich from my childhood,Cheese with tomato sauce, cut into for squares, try it,its lovely
