My landlord raised our rent from £690 to £1000pm and I've been living with my parents since. Lukily, I had a remote job, but moving from London to a village in somerset while earning 38K is madness. I just couldn't find a place. Anyways, we're moving to essex next month, and I don't plan on searching for a place anytime soon, rhe rent prices are enormous!

Any recommendations of good cities to perhaps move too, I'm from Nottingham & the prices here just seem ridiculous for what they should be worth.
I earn more than my mother (single parent) ever did when she brought her house back in 2006, & I wouldn't be able to afford her house now. She was just a call center operative & I'm a software developer. I guess you could say timing is key. 🤷🏿‍♂️

ITS NO DIFFERENT IN BRIGHTON and other cities now.
ITs crazy ...and THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS DEALING WITH LETTING AGENTS who want you to earn 30 times the rent or they fail you. THUS LEAVING PERFECTLY HOMEABLE PEOPLE OUT OF HOMES.
      This has to stop.
Rent controls are needed AND letting agents forbidden from putting tenants under so much pressure.
LETTING AGENTS ARE CURRENTLY HARMING SOCIETY. NO QUESTION.

that's because housing in london is a scam. Housing is actually a "solved" problem from an engineering standpoint, just look at the high rise condos/flats built affordably across Asia. It's just that existing property owners oppose all new developments that might increase supply . 🤷‍♂

650 a week or month? I get so confused when I see videos about the renting market in the UK as some talk about the rent per week and other per month. We only pay per month in Sweden. 650 £ is a lot of money even if it is per month!

London has always been & will always be the most expensive place to live. Globalisation and tech have had a catastrophic effect on young people’s salaries, particularly new graduates. Let’s say the average graduate starting salary is £20,000 in London and I’m an employer & I can can get a European graduate to accept £15,000. I’ll take them. Demand outstrips supply in housing & salaries are going in the opposite direction. I urge young people not to come to London for work or to live if they can possibly avoid it. I don’t understand why the government doesn’t speed up with its levelling up in cities outside London, particularly encouraging high tech businesses to move North. There’s clearly a need for it.

    • @Gregusse

Who are these Europeans undercutting our poor British graduates? You mean those Europeans from countries, many of which, are richer (10 countries in the EEA have higher GDP per capita than the UK).
I think someone has been listening to a bit too much Nigel Farage made-up stories from Nigel's fairy land...
Ever thought that the big salaries in London exist because the talent is there? Sure, get rid of all the Europeans and the British workers will be paid more and how long will that last? Why would I as a company want to continue paying a big fat salary in a place with a dwindling talent pool?

Try renting or buying in Cornwall, where I'm from. Our own people can't even get a home because those that aren't from here but holidays home and leave them standing most of the year. Cornwall council never used to tax second homes but they are going to and these homeowners are kicking off about it..... We pay tax on rented properties here, even being cornish ffs so what makes them think they're entitled to it free.

Although London is one of the most expensive places to rent, the housing crisis is becoming a national issue.
At 46 years old, I have autism and work part-time, earning a modest income. Securing a council house has become nearly impossible as local governments are stretched to their limits. Renting privately is also becoming prohibitively expensive for more and more people.
I'm witnessing a rise in homelessness, which is a clear indication that our most vulnerable citizens aren't receiving the support they need.
In my opinion, it’s highly unlikely that our new government will take any meaningful action to address the housing crisis.

I'm afraid you are competing against millions of economic migrants, who do not need to work, as they are being housed by the UK Government using taxpayers' money to pay inflated rents... or more correctly the rent is being paid with money borrowed by the UK government. The annual Benefits bill in London alone is £43 Billion. If this were to stop, or just slow down, then English people might have a more secure future in their own country..

Rent in London is very hectic because you know I been staying in hotels for 9 months straight now jumping here and there like a grasshopper. Got no job claiming benefits since pandemic and now DWP is close my benefits. We are all doomed.
Also blame immigration for the extortionate increase in housing values that’s destroying our basic human rights. They’re the ones milking, cheating and breaking the system. It used to be fair years back but now it’s total injustice.
