- Bloomberg News' Ondiro Oganga reports on Kenya's Shilling appreciating 19% this year and inflation marking a 2-year low. She speaks with Vonnie Quinn on Bloomberg Daybreak: Middle East & Africa.
Good to see Ondiro is reporting live from Kigali, Rwanda & not Nairobi, Kenya🤣!
Right? At this point, is the info even reliable, is she kenyan based in Rwanda? So many questions
😂😂😂😂 this is laughable
😂😂😂
As I Kenyan, I can say this is just propaganda, the food prices are still high and so are transport prices
Very true, nothing has changed, they raised fuel prices by Ksh.50 and reduced it by Ksh. 12. Its all just games, manipulation, and propaganda
Take a bowl and start begging from white people. Food prices have dropped significantly but you just want a white saviour. Go to hell!
Currently 90kg maize is 1500/ from 6500/ last year ... Maybe .. your not living in Kenya ...
as a Kenyan, prices of food commodities have gone down. Sugar and flour retailing at an all time low
Floor was 200 a year ago now for 130...I may not like the government but am not a pessimist all the time
These guy are playing with our heads ... Increase by 50 then decrease by 20 6 months later ... Then congratulate yourself! 😂😂😂
The shilling is still gaining against these currencies, so one can reasonably predict further decreases in commodity prices
I saw this lady (Ondiro) bashing Gov't steps taken to improve Kenya's economy a few weeks ago! Amazing!😇
she is a good journalist but she is clearly anti ruto. she contributes to many channels and her bias shows clearly. I cant blame her, kenyans are too political. but numbers cant lie. and bloomberg just follows the numbers. personally thats all i care about the regime, gdp numbers, inflation numbers, etc
love to see it 😂😂😂😂
She is just chasing the dollar,,,wherever they are.hana msimamo.
Lol appreciation of the shilling doesn't mean that the Economy has improved
Pia mimi nikiitwa Bloomberg I will show up, it will def look good on her resume, hebu tumwache apate shingi zake😄🎉
Prices are definitely stabilizing but we have bigger issues than the price of tomatoes or Ugali.
As a Kenyan, yes prices of produces have started going down and as a person who was holding USDT. It's not fun anymore. Shilling is strong.
Maybe you should sell before the Fed nails it further
I sold usdt when kes was trading around 169 per 1 usd 4 months ago. Thank God I did that
Which prices have gone down? Electricity is still up, the decrease in fuel price is negligible. Please respect yourself
@OwenKodi the reason is the retailers don't know how the exchange market works. Whenever prices increase, that's it. There will be no decrease in price of commodities
@@somaflam That's the reason why there is nothing to celebrate or be happy about.
There is absolutely NO "steady decline" in the prices of food, water, transport, electricity, and gas in Kenya. Quite the opposite.
There's steady decline I was surprised to buy sugar at 140 down from 220+
@@Ckenselekt cooking oil and unga prices are down by quite a bit as well. I'm buying my unga at 130 down from 240.
@@Ckenselektnothing has declined, they mentioned on news why sugar price reduced, 1kg of chickpeas was 260 now 420, a sachet of white coffee was 20 not 25-30.
She can't know....she actually lying live from Rwanda.
@@Wesh997 I am a Kenyan and I live in Central Kenya. I can truthfully say that prices are falling.
Wow .. im happy for Ondiro Oganga
Hamko serious ..alafu ondiro umelipwa kuuza jabaaa huko
Kenya is a good example to East Africa.. i wish they wont make a mess to Use a single EA Currency with other poor-performing economies like Uganda and Burundi.
If that happens Kenya will be the greatest beneficiary of that merger. And in the long run that will sort out currency volatilities
Its true food prices have gone down, relatively. Sugar for instance has reduced in price by over 25 per cent in the last 6 months or so
importantly, the staple maize flour has gone down by over 50%
For the unprocessed maize. It had dropped by 100%
I remember as a child one USD was about 7/- and 5¢ was the smallest coin.
Playing with currency exchange is playing with fire. You only have to look at the case of Zimbabwe where a loaf of bread costs 1b. Uganda, Somalia (wheel barrow to carry notes), Venezuela. Its a no, no zone. Please don't politicize and muck around with an artificial exchange rate. Let the shilling find its own value.
Yup most Americans dont understand why our dollar is inflating
Kwani niko nchi nyingine😌
Magic by Kenyans!
Nobody appears to understand the magic happening behind the scenes. Anyway, let's hope the shilling continues improving.
@@wanjohimike6602 don't mind him these are pessimists who are on standby waiting for bad things to become keyboard warriors....not that he knows anything he's just unhappy that it's happening....a typical bitter kenyan
@@wanjohimike6602 no magic, just artificially propped up by the euro bond.
Conducive environment brought by stable political environment. All this started when Raila met with president Ruto in Uganda
LOL, mentioning Ruto embarrasses them...they said he would fail miserably🤣😂😂
Unpatriotic Kenyans always comment nonsense
Diaspora should not send money until the exchange rate is right. They don't get this money for free. They work hard for it, so they should get a fair rate.
Good news for Kenya, keep up.
The only problem is that the government is doing all that for politicians and government officials and their families, the economy in Kenya has nothing to do with Kenyans outside the government or politics. If you asked the government how each citizen is doing by personal statistics, they don't know because they don't care.
Give it Time.
World's best performing currency for now. Not world's best. They are playing with our heads somewhere because soon the dollar is going gain against Kenyan currency. We don't manufacture anything, we don't export much, what will make the Shilling hold onto these gains in the long term?
Look at the Ghanaian Cedi. It was the best performing currency just a year ago. Where are they now?
Utangoja sana😂😂😂
Don't be a naysayer or pessimist all the time. For once, appreciate a good thing about our country.
@@nicholaskiwanuka4496 is it kenya affecting the changes or is u.s.a dollar declining
Ghana defaulted on their loan and that affected their Cedi. Also, please go further back on the history of the Cedi. Ghana took several Zeros off their currency to make it trade 1:1 to the $
@@nicholaskiwanuka4496 Right now the shilling's trajectory is not based on any economic fundamentals. It was just an event that triggered the gain. We are still doing poorly on matters to do with trade balance. Like i said, It's only a matter of time before the shilling loses whatever it gained. So this is not about pessimism or anything. I am simply stating facts unlike you who is emotional for reasons unknown to us.
Kenyans don’t celebrate because this appreciation is due to Wall Street, they are fooling you, every time an African currency has appreciated it is followed by massive declines, happened to Ghana, happened to Zambia in the last 3 years. Our currencies in Africa should doing better than the US because we are not printing free money like them, and we are not in debt like them and we have more in our ground than them
Massive declines in Zambia and Ghana happened because they defaulted on their loans.
They can afford to print because their currencies are reserve currencies.
@@eacoincmubiru5894
Actually they can’t, they have created fake economies which they are now just controlling by transferring inflation to you. Very soon it’ll gone crumbling
@@njambizzy
That contributed, but in Zambia currency went up after then it just dropped, its wall at playing with you, every currency in Africa is in continuos depreciation, recently foreign banks in South Africa were caught conniving to bring the rand down through illegal means.
when jobless people have data for browsing they will be yapping anything on social media to seem intelligent 😅

Thanks for the coverage Bloomberg. In Swahili we say Ahsante sana.. which means thanks.
It's impressive to see that you have a pulse on Africa. Generally Africa doesn't receive enough coverage. Especially regarding positive occurrences.
We hope to reinvigorate Kenya.. to be the land of Hakuna Matata it once was.
BTW Hakuna Matata means no worries.

The price of sugar goes down to 30%. Inflation has eased . Thanks to our government's robust policies.
Good morning congratulations to truth Kenyan dreams watching from Saudi Arabia mecca my name is Rukia Ahmed community led volunteer work in Kayaba slump
William Ruto, the professor of Politics and Economy
the KES has definitely gained against the USD in the las 2 to 3 months, thereby easing inflation but we all know what the Kenyan government (CBK) has done and it's not sustainable in the long run. I recon the KES/USD rate will go back to the 160/165 by June this year.
dot put your money on it. it is just now finding its real value
Please explain why you are saying that
It will take years before you see the 165 again, i wanted to invest 300,000$ in kenya and now I want to play my cool and wait. $ is everywhere in the market, shilling might still gain strength for the next few years. Then the same cycle will restart again.
What is the best world currency.Blood dollar?
Ondiro from Kigali, Rwanda 😂😂😂
Inflation slowing and shops are not responsive😮😮
not good for everyone
The Kenyan govt is taking us for a ride, thinking we are fools. Economics is a common unit in our universities.
Is it just me, or are we all lowley pissed that they are using the old notes for brolls? As I Journalist, we should keep up with the new
How is it helping anyone
Kwa ground mambo ni tofauti
Bloomberg is using our former notes😂😂😂Funny enough
The moment we stop trading in Dollars then Kenya can talk as equals
Tell as it is: how it plummeted to the worst in its history since last year..
I could feel the difference, needing less KES to buy the dollar for this past one month
Ruto economics is working.
Huh🤔, which country are you talking about? Ama mimi niko nchi ingne? It ain't April 1st right? You should perhaps have me as your Kenyan correspondent. Kigali is far.
Which country are you talking about? Coz the Kenya I'm in is bloody expensive.
Clearly propaganda. She ahss not mentioned this exchange rate at the time the current government took office and that the exchange rate had been stable for several years before that.
I short if you looked at the 5 year trend what do you see. Before commenting, have a look at this time series chart.
Textbook theories
Gulf people just relax and don't send any money for now not unless is emergency remember what you're going through to get that salary just relax and keep eye on coz today you send with lower rate tomorrow goes up then you loose
The reason the KSh has strengthened is because the government has raised billions of dollars that it's yet to spend.
RUTO🔥🔥🔥
Food prices hasn't change a bit, government tax going up, things will be mess again in few months.

So what's this world best currency? You should report about kenya while I kenya 😅
Pumping into the Kenyan economy a huge amount borrowed dollar creates a false gain of the Kenyan shilling. The gain is not magic, but as usual, a lie.
Even that sudden depreciation to 165 wasnt normal too, the currency will float anywhere from 110-140 or 150 foe the next few years. The cycle will start over again soon and this time $ will pass 180
