Leaving Iglesia Ni Cristo was the best decision of my life
- Leadership of the INC is basically passed down from father to son like a dynasty. The executive minister is basically fawned over the way North Koreans do over their supreme leader; this weird praise for the leader makes even Mormons and Evangelicals uncomfortable
- They used to lock us inside during services
- Attendance was taken and tracked; if you start missing services, random church members will start showing up at your house unannounced
- Cash donations at the end of service weren't enough; there were periodic money drives in which they'd actually track how much you were contributing (gotta pay for those palaces and stadiums in the Philippines some way, I guess)
- We got told who to vote for - so naturally, it'd be for whoever who lined up most with some administrator's political beliefs, or whichever politician happened to court INC the most
- The church would control our lives in other ways - I remember one lady was told to quit her job at a hotel because it happened to be affiliated with a casino. This also meant no working at bars, and my old minister tried to stop me joining the Army because I'd miss out on services while I was away
- And most importantly... the threat of getting expelled if you disagree with any church decision, ask the wrong questions, are associated with the wrong people, etc. As you theoretically can only go to heaven if you're a member of the church, a mere mortal man has the power to doom you (or possibly members of your family) to "eternity in the lake of fire" in the church's eyes. Just stop for a second and appreciate how fucking insidious this is; it's an ever-present threat used to keep everyone in line
- And there was that whole incident in 2015, in which the leader expelled most of his immediate family over a disagreement over their big stupid stadium. It's alleged that senior INC staff have been guilty of financial corruption, which is all swept under the rug when anyone with an issue with INC's management ends up getting kidnapped, held hostage, and later expelled. Reminds me of the USSR's Great Purge.

@@gabriellecases6167 Honestly, I don't think I'm smarter than anyone else who is or was in the church; I was just lucky enough to be born into a family that didn't disown me for wanting to leave.
There's a whole subreddit of ex-INC members and current INC members who want to leave. It's surprising how many people in the church don't really want to be there - the threat of being made homeless or a pariah in the only family and community they've ever known effectively keeps a lot people trapped in the INC.
