Fortunately, as a not-a-cop, I don't have to go to places where I'm more likely to need said firearm. If I never shoot anything but targets and various rural pests in my life I will be okay with that. ETA: I have a ton of POST-certified classes from a guy who was a firearms trainer for a major Midwestern police department. He always says that you fight like you train because in the moment it tends to be muscle memory that either works for you or against you when the adrenaline hits. You can't miss enough times to win a fight. I highly recommend training and lots of it if you do carry a weapon.

I think it’s reasonable to say it was a stalemate situation. If they all unanimously attacked him he’d be screwed for sure but of course they didn’t know who would be shot or how many of them would be beforehand. If he did begin shooting them before they made a move that would’ve pushed them to fight or flight. Hopefully at least some of them have been caught at this point. What a truly terrifying situation to find yourself in.
i’m a college student in milwaukee and my criminal justice teacher is a retired detective. he’s a very good man and i enjoy talking to him, one day i asked if he was working as a detective during the dahmer case and he just casually said “oh yeah, i was sent to his apartment almost immediately after he was caught”. needless to say, my teacher is a badass
I was a cop in the Air Force stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. It was my second duty station and I had only been there about a month. I worked the graveyard shift from 10 pm to 6 am. One of my first posts was a building called SP (security police) supply. It was a large three story building about the length and width of a football field. The first floor had a U.S. Post Office occupying one half and SP supply admin the other half. The second floor was security police supply and classrooms. The third floor was entirely under construction. The building had balcony hallways so you could meander up and down the exterior halls and stairways. After only a short time, I decided to venture up to the third floor and look around. The first room I went into was very large and definitely in the remodeling stage. As I shined my flashlight around, I saw what appeared to be thousands of tiny red led lights lining the ceiling and as I got closer I saw that they were hundreds of bats hung upside down on the upper walls. I quietly stepped backwards to the door and out into the hallway. I was so relieved to be out of there. The stairs are now to my left and the long corridor is to my right. As I turn to my right I see a woman wearing a long white flowing dress, holding onto the railing looking out into the darkness. She was glowing white. I booked it outa there so fast and on the radio calling/hallering for backup. I made it down to the parking lot where I was able to jump in the back of a parked military truck. The lot was directly in front of where my ghostly apparition was. As the patrol vehicle arrived, I hopped out and ran to them. As I start to blurt out what just happened, the driver raises his hand to cut me off and says “let me guess, a woman in a white dress?” My very first thought was I just got punked. My own flight just punked the new guy. Thankfully the passenger said “relax everyone sees her once.” Needless to say I was wide awake the entire shift. About two months goes by and I land back on this post. The construction is mostly finished and the third floor is now more lit up than before. I’m walking a zigzag pattern down the hallways. First floor second floor third floor second floor first floor second floor, up and down. Again, right about midnight, I’m approaching the third floor stairwell when I hear a metallic “tink” behind me. I turn around and there she is again, glowing white looking out and closer than ever at thirty feet or so. I was startled but at the same time I figured I’m gonna get to the bottom of this and put all those Saturday episodes of Scooby-Doo to good use. As I closed in to twenty feet, she turned her head towards me and I saw first hand she had no eyes or nose. It was a skeletal like figure with long grey hair. I have NEVER been so close to pissing all over myself as I was at that moment. In the months I had remaining there, I noticed more often new troops yelling for backup from that post: “51 Base priority”. “You go girl” I mumble as I’m walking my current post.
This is why police need more training and better schooling to keep them and others safer in these situations instead of random community college 6 month trainees.
A lot of career paths need extra time spent on maintaining control when faced with something that would normally send us into terror overdrive, not just police. :/ Keeping calm will keep them (and others) safer than being obviously distressed, which makes them more of a target for whoever/whatever is scaring them.
When i was a kid, i thought being a cop was just all about car chases, but this is extreme.

I always have to remember that emergency personnel are just as human as the rest of us, they get scared like we do for things like this, but they're expected to keep going forward and be in control.

Almost every night he would come home with blood all over him. He has had to get into gunfights with many people and has seen people who have been murdered on the floor. Just recently he dealed with a case where someone was raped, beaten, and killed in acid. If you consider being a police officer, be careful

I think it’s reasonable to say it was a stalemate situation. If they all unanimously attacked him he’d be screwed for sure but of course they didn’t know who would be shot or how many of them would be beforehand. If he did begin shooting them before they made a move that would’ve pushed them to fight or flight. Hopefully at least some of them have been caught at this point. What a truly terrifying situation to find yourself in.

i’m a college student in milwaukee and my criminal justice teacher is a retired detective. he’s a very good man and i enjoy talking to him, one day i asked if he was working as a detective during the dahmer case and he just casually said “oh yeah, i was sent to his apartment almost immediately after he was caught”. needless to say, my teacher is a badass

I was a cop in the Air Force stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. It was my second duty station and I had only been there about a month. I worked the graveyard shift from 10 pm to 6 am. One of my first posts was a building called SP (security police) supply. It was a large three story building about the length and width of a football field. The first floor had a U.S. Post Office occupying one half and SP supply admin the other half. The second floor was security police supply and classrooms. The third floor was entirely under construction. The building had balcony hallways so you could meander up and down the exterior halls and stairways. After only a short time, I decided to venture up to the third floor and look around. The first room I went into was very large and definitely in the remodeling stage. As I shined my flashlight around, I saw what appeared to be thousands of tiny red led lights lining the ceiling and as I got closer I saw that they were hundreds of bats hung upside down on the upper walls. I quietly stepped backwards to the door and out into the hallway. I was so relieved to be out of there. The stairs are now to my left and the long corridor is to my right. As I turn to my right I see a woman wearing a long white flowing dress, holding onto the railing looking out into the darkness. She was glowing white. I booked it outa there so fast and on the radio calling/hallering for backup. I made it down to the parking lot where I was able to jump in the back of a parked military truck. The lot was directly in front of where my ghostly apparition was. As the patrol vehicle arrived, I hopped out and ran to them. As I start to blurt out what just happened, the driver raises his hand to cut me off and says “let me guess, a woman in a white dress?” My very first thought was I just got punked. My own flight just punked the new guy. Thankfully the passenger said “relax everyone sees her once.” Needless to say I was wide awake the entire shift. About two months goes by and I land back on this post. The construction is mostly finished and the third floor is now more lit up than before. I’m walking a zigzag pattern down the hallways. First floor second floor third floor second floor first floor second floor, up and down. Again, right about midnight, I’m approaching the third floor stairwell when I hear a metallic “tink” behind me. I turn around and there she is again, glowing white looking out and closer than ever at thirty feet or so. I was startled but at the same time I figured I’m gonna get to the bottom of this and put all those Saturday episodes of Scooby-Doo to good use. As I closed in to twenty feet, she turned her head towards me and I saw first hand she had no eyes or nose. It was a skeletal like figure with long grey hair. I have NEVER been so close to pissing all over myself as I was at that moment. In the months I had remaining there, I noticed more often new troops yelling for backup from that post: “51 Base priority”. “You go girl” I mumble as I’m walking my current post.
This is why police need more training and better schooling to keep them and others safer in these situations instead of random community college 6 month trainees.
A lot of career paths need extra time spent on maintaining control when faced with something that would normally send us into terror overdrive, not just police. :/ Keeping calm will keep them (and others) safer than being obviously distressed, which makes them more of a target for whoever/whatever is scaring them.
