I love seeing you speak with different people from the Field Museum. Every single one of them is so passionate and enthusiastic about their field, it's hard to imagine that anyone could watch them and not be inspired to persue the thing they love doing most!
I kept staring at the captain hammer shirt. That was awesome. This guy knows his audience. Also, I am amazed we can figure out how and from where the meteorites come from. So cool.
Oh lordy I forgot how much I cared about space. Thank you so much for everything you give us through this channel. You constantly remind me why I decided to take up science at university.
Your show is really great! I find myself being captivated and its great that you have branched off to include more than just biology to spark the interest of future scientists!
Thank you for sharing science and knowledge in such an exciting and educational way. This is one of mye favourite Brain Scoops. More from this department of the museum, please. Keep up the excellent work. Greetings from Norway.
I felt like I was a little kid. I was shouting planet names at my television screen after being prompted to by the television. I also learned that I still remember core-mantle-crust for some reason. Stranger things have been remembered by the brain, I suppose.
Captain Hammer! I still think it's really cool that you have the job you do and I always try to be as enthusiastic about my job as well. Good job you guys!
Some days your life must seem very unreal. You've seen remains from the earliest fires, worn a quarter of a million dollars on your neck, and now you've held material from a celestial object millions of miles away all in the name of science.
Jim never told us why iron is so common in meteorites! That's like the coolest factoid in the whole solar system! Jim, get back here and explain that.
Keep in mind that there is a bias at work here: Meteorites are often collected with the help of metal detectors. ;) If you want to find non-metallic meteorites, you should visit a salt lake. There you can collect them visually.
I felt like i was in class listening to this :P Don't read me wrong though, i REALLY enjoyed this video. I like vid's like this that give you in-depth info on the subject. Jim was really informative, and Emily was hilarious as usual, *I am an expert!* xD
Rocks and space: two of my favorite things to learn about! I would love to see more of Jim Holstein. Also, was the stony-iron meteorite polished? If so, what do they look like unpolished? If not, why does it look so different from the other meteorites we looked at this episode?
They were all polished to some degree, but the stony-iron meteorite was also sealed in order to prevent rusting. Although this can help preserve the specimen samples can no longer be taken from it; I imagine it was applied many decades ago before they realized how it could compromise the scientific utility of the specimen.
I still prefer to think that "the meteorite is the source of the light and the meteor's just what we see, and the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee..."
This video was really good, mind blowing! :) now not to be rude but in minute 5:15 I guess he means metal goes to the core because it is denser... because by mass sounds like a estrange explanation.
Thank you space-rock man, I don't think I can Explain how exciting it is that you are a fan [of Dr. Horrible] I would be flattered if you would just say to me, Where oh where'd you find that tee?
With regard to the atmospheric finger prints, does the museum have a meteor of a rock that originally came from earth? A boomerang meteorite if you will?
One of the things I really love about this program is how excited each department head or curator gets when confronted with Emily's enthusiasm.
Don.t ever stop making these little info videos....ever. i so enjoy them.....thanks
The brain scoop is hands down the best thing that has happened on youtube, period. I love it
Maybe one of my favorite episodes!! I knew nothing about meteorites before!!!! Thanks Emily! This was awesome
Wait...IS THAT A CAPTAIN HAMMER SHIRT!?! COOL!
Also, I'm super jealous that you got hold a piece of Mars, that's insanely awesome!
You can buy it for 400 - 600 a gram
Or sometimes 900 dollars
Okay. That's it. I think this is my favorite Brain Scoop Episode ever.
I LOVE HIS SHIRT!!!!!
Justin Baker Dont know what that means, but im sold!
Michael Pomeroy Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog. It's on UA-cam. Look it up! Love it! Thank us later for the revelation. ;)
Alassieth I'll thank you now if you don't mind.
Thank you.
so there's little pockets of "air" inside of meteorites that TELL YOU WHERE IT'S FROM?! THAT'S SO COOL
Why is a moon rock tastier than an Earth rock?
Because it's a little meteor!
...I'll show myself out...
"Let's go to the board!" Perfect teacher moment. Great video, Emily and Jim!
I love seeing you speak with different people from the Field Museum. Every single one of them is so passionate and enthusiastic about their field, it's hard to imagine that anyone could watch them and not be inspired to persue the thing they love doing most!
This was sooooo great and Jim is so well spoken, I could listen to him talk about space stuff for hours.
Props for spelling Spaaaaaace! correctly. It's a common mistake to spell it "space".
Space Court. For people in space. Judge space sun presiding. Bam. Guilty. Of being in space. I'm in space.
Approval of the Captain Hammer shirt.
I
Me, too.
Thanks for giving the folks that work behind the scenes a chance to shine and be heard! It's so great to see and hear from them.
I kept staring at the captain hammer shirt. That was awesome. This guy knows his audience. Also, I am amazed we can figure out how and from where the meteorites come from. So cool.
1: "Captain Hammer SHIIRT!"
2: That was fascinating! I love all the space talk!
It still has Martian atmosphere on it.
Oh lordy I forgot how much I cared about space. Thank you so much for everything you give us through this channel. You constantly remind me why I decided to take up science at university.
Why do you have to wear gloves when you touch meteroites? This episode was really cool!
Alien germs.
Jeff pyrotek
I see, thanks!
it's funny gloves are often used to not protect you but to protect meteorites (or anything else) from your skins oils.
Jeff pyrotek
Oh yea, I keep forgetting what toxic lumps of meat we can be.
Jeff pyrotek Lenin is a meteorite and people touch him?
Your show is really great! I find myself being captivated and its great that you have branched off to include more than just biology to spark the interest of future scientists!
I have to say, I really love these geology videos you do. It's one of my favorite branches of science.
Thank you Hammer-man, I don't think I can explain how important it was that you explained the difference between meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites.
OMG HE'S WEARING A CAPTAIN HAMMER SHIRT!!! Sir.... you just made my day.
Captain Hammer shirt! Awesome!
I just love your videos! Thanks for representing us STEM ladies so humorously and intelligently. And yaaaay geology videos!!
Thank you for sharing science and knowledge in such an exciting and educational way. This is one of mye favourite Brain Scoops. More from this department of the museum, please. Keep up the excellent work. Greetings from Norway.
Captain Hammer!
Awesomesauce!
Nerdy out right now.
This guy is really good at explaining things! I'd love to see more videos with him in the future!
More please! Love this channel.
I truly enjoy this episode.
I would like to hear more on this subject.
Well done.
Is the hammer his...chondritic meteorite.
Nice Dr. Horrible reference.
No, it's his penis.
I felt like I was a little kid. I was shouting planet names at my television screen after being prompted to by the television. I also learned that I still remember core-mantle-crust for some reason. Stranger things have been remembered by the brain, I suppose.
This episode was really cool! Are we going to hear more about meteorites in another episode?
More of this guy..One of the best episodes yet!
This episode was awesome! And Mr Holstein is a great communicator! I hope we see him again, soon!
The hell with learning anything, it is just as fun to watch Emily being amazed and fascinated all the time ^^
So glad to see the BrainScoop branch out to other subjects!
Jim is really good at explaining his topic, starting from zero and working his way up in branching bridges.
YOU are working in an amazing place. Another great episode.
More of this guy! He's awesome and seriously seriously loves his work! He's the Anna Goldman of meteorites!
please more of this kind of video! I love me some nature, but space is my jam!
I feel like this episode was way too short!
This guy is an awesome teacher, and his shirt is great!
This was a fascinating episode! Thanks Emily :)
As a geology grad student, I was really excited to have a very geology related Brain Scoop! This was great!
This was really interesting! Thank you Emily and Captain Hammer
Captain Hammer!
I still think it's really cool that you have the job you do and I always try to be as enthusiastic about my job as well. Good job you guys!
Oh my god is that a Captain Hammer shirt?!
YES IT IS
yesss me too Captain Hammer.
Captain Hammer! I always wondered what his day job was.
It's been almost 10 years since I graduated High School, and I still remembered all of this. Feeling pretty good about myself right now. :)
HA! I love his Captain Hammer shirt! :D
This is awesome. I hope you'll have more video about Astronomy.
Some days your life must seem very unreal. You've seen remains from the earliest fires, worn a quarter of a million dollars on your neck, and now you've held material from a celestial object millions of miles away all in the name of science.
The greatest video description ever
This guy is a great speaker. Do more with him please!!
Great episode! I really enjoyed this!
Once again everything I didn't know about a subject I didn't know I wanted to know and am glad I now know about!
This episode was so metal.
I dunno, some parts were more rock.
Katie mentioned this episode would be with a great curator and she was absolutely right. I am not specially into space but this guy makes you love it.
This was brilliant! Oh, wait, it's The Brainscoop, of course it's brilliant! Meteorites are so amazingly cool!
Space? Space! I love space. We're in space. Space space space. SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE.
eric green YOUR idea..okay.. cause you're the only one who thought about their portal reference
This was a great episode! I had no idea there were different kinds of meteorites. :D
This was fun. I knew a lot of this stuff, but the chondritic and achondritic meteorites were new to me. Yay!
Yes, more dinosaurs please.
This was an awesome episode!
While watching this, I was gluing the teeth back into the jaw of a raccoon skull. I feel this is an appropriate activity for watching The Brain Scoop.
How interesting! I knew a lot from watching Meteorite Men but there were things I'd never heard of before in this episode.
Jim never told us why iron is so common in meteorites! That's like the coolest factoid in the whole solar system! Jim, get back here and explain that.
Iron is pretty common because it's the end of the stellar fusion chain and iron nuclei are very stable and don't get broken down easily.
Iron has the highest possible nuclear stability. All atoms(nuclei) try to become iron the best they can.
Keep in mind that there is a bias at work here: Meteorites are often collected with the help of metal detectors. ;)
If you want to find non-metallic meteorites, you should visit a salt lake. There you can collect them visually.
onesigmaoff Well YEAH, I know that, I just wanted him to tell us :)
Suns. 'nough said.
Good job uncle jim! Really liked the video!
Thanks Bobby!
I felt like i was in class listening to this :P
Don't read me wrong though, i REALLY enjoyed this video. I like vid's like this that give you in-depth info on the subject. Jim was really informative, and Emily was hilarious as usual, *I am an expert!* xD
I wish these episodes were about 10x longer. Music cutting in and I want to hear more about space rocks!
Rocks that RAWK! Thanks guys!!
All I could think of during this episode was "The hammer is my penis." #distractingshirt
More meteorites! These are fascinating!
Rocks and space: two of my favorite things to learn about! I would love to see more of Jim Holstein. Also, was the stony-iron meteorite polished? If so, what do they look like unpolished? If not, why does it look so different from the other meteorites we looked at this episode?

Wow, I'd like more astronomy on this channel, this was so cool!
Love the Captain Hammer shirt Jim!
I want more on this topic, its amazing.
Is there more content coming with Jim? That was a really interesting episode, hope to see more from you both soon :)
Jim will be doing an AMA on our subreddit soon! /r/thebrainscoop for updates :D
So, that is how they know some meteorites are from Mars... :D
I wasn't quite sure of this till now.
#TheBrainScoop #meteorites #Mars
You got to touch a piece of Mars!
I love this show so much!
great episode! I love Astronomy!
What!? She is holding a piece of Mars! Jealous!
I would love to hear more from him!
I still prefer to think that "the meteorite is the source of the light and the meteor's just what we see, and the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee..."
This show makes me want to go to the field museum
This video was really good, mind blowing! :) now not to be rude but in minute 5:15 I guess he means metal goes to the core because it is denser... because by mass sounds like a estrange explanation.
This was such an interesting episode!!
This is an amazing episode! Also, I love your dress, where did you get it? I want one!
How cool, wonderful otherworldly items right in your gloved hands.

Explain how exciting it is that you are a fan [of Dr. Horrible]
I would be flattered if you would just say to me,
Where oh where'd you find that tee?
More spacey videos please!
With regard to the atmospheric finger prints, does the museum have a meteor of a rock that originally came from earth? A boomerang meteorite if you will?
I could listen to this guy talk for hours.
Her curiousity is just astonishing!
it would be so amazing to be able to hold something and say "this was in outer space"
I love Emily's sweater!
