I have been watching these all day, and my favorite thing about it is Emilys totally unbridled enthusiasm for absolutely everything, and that watching these visits with other scientists you can see them getting more excited about stuff as she shows her excitement

I love that the guest host has a great sense of humor even when being responsible for such a collection. Major props to The Field Museum for getting involved with this channel!
I mean, anything in that museum is equally priceless, it's just that society says that fancy jewelry must be an extra special kind of priceless because we see it on kings and queens and celebrities. I like his attitude of appreciating the artistry of the pieces and the beauty of the stones, but aside from that it's just minerals with interesting physical properties. I get Emily spazzing out about wearing the necklace, though.
Lance Grande seems like such a nice man! I hope we see him again on the Brain Scoop soon! Plus seeming Emily wearing a $250,000 necklace was, well, priceless!
The brainscoop should do more geology. I love it, and I definitely think this is one of the best videos so far. There should be some explanation of the formations and structures of the stones, if you did gemology again, though.
This is the great thing about the Field Museum adopting Emily and The Brainscoop. We get to meet people like Lance Grande and Jim Louderman (from the insect videos) who are incredibly knowledgeable and fascinating to hear from.
The most entertaining part of this is how they're handling collectively millions of dollars in gems like costume jewelry, and store it in ziplock baggies in a drawer. People always feel like everything in a museum is delicate and fragile, even if it's something as strong as jade or diamond. It's nice to see people get hands-on with these kinds of artifacts.
They must have some serious security on that room. Thank you Brain Scoop and Mr. Grande for showing us some of the gems! They were very cool to see. Maybe at some point you could talk about the science behind gems, or how they're mined?

The smaller pouch with it was probably used for coins that you would use to toss onto the stage if the performance was remarkable... Almost like tipping the entertainment also.
This was AMAAAZZZZIIIINNGGG! The diamond and garnets in their natural form were really mindblowing, I would never have expected them to form like that. Those garnets were so perfectly formed, why did anyone ever think they should start cutting them up. Jeez, humanity. This is such an awesome video, I never thought we might be able to explore other areas of the museum, it's so exciting!
***** That is the idea, but it is very much debatable wether the so-called "imperfections" of natural gems are necessarily bad. It depends, I suppose. Jewlry is nice, but a gem in a "natural" state has its own wonderful charm.

My point is that we as a society don't value these natural forms, "shaping, shining, and refining" is not necessary to make these gems beautiful, its primary purpose isn't really to make them look nicer, it's so people can wear their wealth. People think gems looks better in their "refined" and cut state because we associate them with wealth and status, they are more beautiful to us in that form because it's what we as a society are used to. It's the accepted form of beauty. Personally, I think these gems look far more beautiful in their natural form and I have absolutely no desire to wear them in a "refined" form. Sure, they look gorgeous in jewellery, I'm not condemning their use in jewellery, but I get more joy from my little chunk of natural amethyst than from my garnet ring. They're beautiful in all forms, but we shouldn't forsake or dismiss the natural form of something so incredible just because it wouldn't look good in a necklace. I wish there were more gem displays in museums (there's none in my local) so we could learn to appreciate not just the natural form of gems, but appreciate where they have come from, and how, and the processes they go through to become a trinket. I think a lot of people take the gems they see in jewellery stores for granted, and they shouldn't, because they are amazing objects created by our earth and we don't stop to think about how crazy it is that they are these naturally occurring deposits that we have decided are beautiful and have given immense value. We should allow ourselves to be awed by the natural creation and formation of gems, and avoid looking at them only to think 'it would be nicer if it was a tenth of the size and surrounded by silver, and on my neck'. Gems are more than just jewellery.
I love how you guys are expanding the approach of this channel to a museological one. From doing dissections and zoology to anthropology and everything that involves the inner workings of a museum. Keep up the good work!!!!!

This is probably my favorite segment to date. I love rocks. The slinky gold necklace was very interesting, as was the gold chainmail bag. Also, we need more shots of Emily being glamorous. Try on all the jewelry!
Wonderful! the backrooms at the Field offer endless entertainment highlighted by the witty descriptions. "I feel pretty" and the Fortress of Solitude discussion were enchanting.
I love minerals -- and I love seeing behind the scenes at the Field Museum. Thanks. Oh -- and as for the gold purse -- that dates to the time when, if a lady went out for the evening, the man who escorted her would be expected to take care of everything. All she needed was a lipstick a handkerchief, and possibly coins to tip the maid who worked in the ladies' room. Different world.
The gem room is always my absolute favorite part of the museum. Especially before the revamp...I love the openness of the new room, but the old, quiet, dark one with the bright lights contrasting the dark velvet just seemed to fit much better with the shining stones :)
I finally got an answer as to where Emily got those awesome earrings! The nerd value of the earrings makes them more valuable than the majority of the gem collection, I think.
Love this. The Gem Room always fascinated me as a young child & still does. I can see the beauty even though I rarely wear jewelry. BTW, as I remember, they used to have a lot larger section devoted to displaying the gems back in the 50's & even 60's. What I love best about being a Field Museum member is the annual members nights when you can go up in the attic & see things that aren't normally on display & listen to presentations about the work of the staff. This channel is the UA-cam version of that! Love it!

That low quality emerald is freaking awesome, the deer are also pretty cool on it. You see so much tacky pressed plastic nowadays that the natural rivulets and forms in the stuff actually look more impressive :)

When I took a week vacation to Chicago, I spent two days at the Field Museum, and the second day was spent almost exclusively in the jade exhibit and the mineral exhibit. It really brought to life what I'd been learning in my geology class to see so many uncut samples. I couldn't have been happier!
