Stretching the double loop flat load

  • For anyone that’s ever asked or that we’ve shown, here is how we pull our flat load at 24-C. We have two goals pulling it this way: 1) It all gets flaked out so there are no kinks. 2) We get the nozzle and the coupling to the front door.
    - Our first line is always the crosslay with the nozzle facing the fire as it makes the prettiest stretch. (We aren’t using nova cool on the initial attack.)
    - We retrace our steps for two reasons: 1) it helps flake the hose out as retracing and turning perpendicular to the front door uses more hose than making a beeline for the door after we drop the first loop. 2) it keeps us from getting caught on obstacles such as trees, fences, landscaping, etc. Generally there are not gonna be obstructions inline with the front door.

Retired 30 yr. IAFF firefighter, we used that load successfully for most of my career. I taught at an academy and we had to demonstrate various loads including the minuteman load. The right-hand pull flat load was always easier to deploy and reload. Good video.

Just put 50ft stack with the nozzle attached on your shoulder. Second loop at 100ft mark, less of a mess and way more mobility. Let the driver take care of the rest.

Why not take what you need, I watch these guys today run with the entire load then dump it in a heap. Take a few flakes and then have the pump operator flake it out to you.
