1997 ALCS, Game 3: Orioles @ Indians

- Baltimore Orioles 1 at Cleveland Indians 2, F/12 -- Mike Mussina spun a gem for the Orioles, striking out an LCS-record 15 through seven innings, but veteran Orel Hershiser matched him zero-for-zero. The stellar starters were long gone by the 12th inning, though (and the were bullpens close to depletion) when the Tribe threatened. With two outs and a man on first, the winning run stood at third base in the person of the speedy Marquis Grissom. Indians' manager Mike Hargrove called for the squeeze bunt from Omar Vizquel. On a 2-1 Randy Meyers pitch, Grissom broke toward home and Vizquel bunted at the ball, which went rolling away from Baltimore catcher Lenny Webster, allowing the run to score. Despite heated arguments from O's manager Davey Jones and Cal Ripken, it was ruled that Vizquel did not foul it off and Webster was charged with a passed ball, giving the Indians the victory and a 2-1 series lead.
This was one of my all-time favorite games. Even though I’m a diehard Cleveland fan, I have to admit that this game also made me a fan of Mike Mussina. Dude was pure nails that night and fully deserves a tip of the cap.
Miss this era and im sox fan
Weird how he didnt win a ring
Mussina was like a superstar Aaron sele
We went wire to wire but you Indians simply outplayed us. Too bad you did not beat Florida however......
I thought Game 6 was more classic than this. Mussina was unbelievable again and the crowd was going nuts with each and every strikeout. Baltimore was probably the best team in the majors, but that doesn't always work out. They were particularly great on the road. This was one of best series I've ever seen despite it going only 6 games. All the games were great and played at a extremely high level.
Agreed this was an amazing series. I remember coming home from school wanting to watch the games because it was that good and exciting.
Mike Mussina should and will end up in the Hall of fame.
He absolutely belongs - and I sure hope he does get in (only 43% of the vote this past year). The things that work against him are he never won a Cy Young or a World Series, had only one 20-win season and a relatively high ERA compared to the guys from the Steroid Era who have gotten in. But I think he is a surefire Hall-of-Famer, beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Palmeiro and Clemens likely won't because of the steroid connections.
@jesusisnotallright s Wow let's just vote everyone in...
Finally made it.
@@s.tavares3257 Clemens, Rodriguez, Bonds, Sosa, Palmeiro, McGwire will never get in the Hall cu of PEDS, steroids, cheating.
Damn, Eric Davis is one tough SOB. With all the injuries he had and his resiliency he should have never touched a field and should have become a solider instead. He spent a decade and a half laughing at the injury gods, destroyed his kidney during the world series and did chemo DURING the playoffs.
Regardless of the title of "Mr. Almost," Moose is one hell of a pitcher to watch, and he ranks up in the top echelon of great pitchers such as Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Randy Johnson, David Cone, Mariano Rivera, Pedro Martinez, etc. What a career he's had, though! He was my favorite in Baltimore.
@M
Yes, Football (European) IS amazing, but if you understand the game beyond the basics you see every game you would realize how multi-faceted the game is, even more so in 2022. You are entitled to your opinion, but spamming EVERY baseball video you see does not prove your point, but instead makes you appear as a malcontent, a troll even.....
Was in Marine Corps basic training, so all of these '97 games are even more awesome
thanx for posting....I'm a Yankees fan but I remember watching this one....what a great pitching exhibition....Mussina unluckiest pitcher in history ! Another game I'd love to see is NLDS Game -1, 1998 SD/HOU K. Brown vs. R. Johnson another great duel!
And no never somehow didn't get ring
This video gives you new appreciation of the super HD cameras used now. There's never a clear angle of whether or not it was a foul tip. It doesn't actually appear to be, but it's very very close. I guess we'll never know for sure.
Good point. Although this one was so close I don’t even know if the most HD of all HD cameras could tell us for certain. If the ball missed the bat literally by a hair (not even exaggerating that). I do lean toward it being the right call, but some small part of me also thinks it’s kind of weird the catcher dropped the ball. 99.9% of the time an MLB catcher snags that. It’s almost as though at the last second something ever so slightly re-directed the ball’s path (ahem, a bat perhaps). I think it may have literally grazed the bat ever so gently, untraceable with the naked eye watching those replays. We’ll never know. I do find it funny that it’s quite obvious Grissom clearly thought it was a foul ball too. He didn’t slide or anything lol. And you see his face as he crosses the plate, he certainly doesn’t have the look of “I just scored the winning run in the ALCS” lol, he doesn’t even turn back quickly to see the result, he just had his lips curled like in mild disappointment probably thinking the foul tip just nullified the whole play. He even turns around and to head back to 3rd base 😂 then realizes the game is over! Like you said we’ll never know, but we do know even if replay existed back then there’s no way they would’ve overturned the call with the video footage available.
The 1997 Indians had a great team. Alomar hit that homer in the ALDS with the Indians an out from elimination and then a game winning passed ball here. Exciting games for sure.
MetsGiantsRangersKnicksNYSports the indians lineup from 94-97 was stacked.
4 outs away, same as in game 2 of this alcs. But yes they were a great team, the pitching overachieved big time to get them so close..
That crowd was so electric at the Jake..really miss those days
George i still hate the marlins lol
@@evs814 Oh those freakin Marlins. It's still sad to see Jeter run them into the ground though, not fair to the players
I still hate the marlins but they are now in the playoffs winning. Going farther than the Indians who lost to New york.
Out of all those Indians teams I thought 99 or 98 was the best
Ahh before replay and boy was it needed in this one..both teams had calls go against them that could've swung the result..loved watching ol Mussina pitch, all business and pounded the zone.
5th grade ball player watching these games with my dad and brother, priceless memories my friends!!!!
This is one of the greatest ALCS games of all time
Certainly one of the most bizarre.
Getting the final game of this ALCS would awesome! Tony Fernandez's greatest moment!

The Orioles had so many quality left-handed arms in the bullpen with Myers, Rhodes, and Orosco but really lacked multiple quality right handed arms.
Steve "Psycho" Lyons breaking down the vomiting situation in the majors. Prime time analysis.
I'd say Charlie Leibrandt is at the top of that list. His 1985 World Series was brutal. And of course, he's remembered for the Puckett HR in 1991
The game starts at 14:30
This umpire was way overgenerous with the strike zone. Some pitches were clearly inside or outside and he called it a strike. But I must say he did so for both sides.
Mike Musina had one of the greatest playoff series ever only giving up 1 run through 15 innings but lost both starts...He gave up only 1 run here but his team couldnt score a measly 2 points in regulation losing 2-1 in the 12th than in the final game he gave up zero points but his team couldn't muster up a single point in regulation losing 1-0 in the 11th lol
plain and simple. cleveland had the best team in baseball in 97.
Wow, that was a good one.
I wasn’t alive then but I wish I lived in those days bc those were the good days of the orioles I’m from Baltimore I was born in 2005
That was a big strike zone but at least he gave it to both teams and not just one
Is it me, or was Joe Buck's "stare" at McCarver(see 9:09) kind of eerie?
Joe Buck is just eerie to begin with. Hopefully Fox dumps him he's horrible.
Gary Street Yea, that was kinda creepy.
@@stevenkramer4762 nope.
So glad they have instant replay now. It was bullshit back then when a bad call (which we see often) was not over turned. Wonder how many games were blown over these bad calls. Had that umpire not blown that call on Alomar in the 9th this game wouldn't have went 5 hours. 😆
Is it just me or is the sound ahead of the video?
great pitching hersheiser vs mussina
Damn the O's for beating my 97 Mariners
Definitely didn't foul tip that at the end. Clean win.
definitely
Cleveland wins
So what do you guys think- foul or a passed ball?
My 11 year old son said why they always have the camera all in their faces that's very annoying, I say I always wonder if they knew the camera is on them and say that's annoying. I always watch these old baseball games.
Are there really TWENTY ADS during this?!?!
GO INDIANS! 1997 AL CHAMPIONS
This game is nuts and I'm not even half-way through. Davey, try a sacrifice!
¡¡¡¡What jewel!!!!
Mussina had one of the more dominate performances in the playoffs that year and went for nothing in this series, 15IP, 1ER, lost both his games in this series
I know that was crazy lol, gave up only 1 run here but his team couldnt score a measly 2 points in regulation losing 2-1 in the 12th than in the final game he gave up zero points but his team couldn't muster up a single point in regulation losing 1-0 in the 11th lol
Maddux similar, only two earned runs total in both starts combined against the marlins, and also 0-2
4:04:36 Walk off win
i miss the old fox baseball brings me back lol
Mussina had the worst luck of any pitcher I've ever followed.
youre not getting vizquel out on a double play. but theoretically yes it does matter.
Jonathan Smiley the missing piece!!! The Cleveland Indians are 1997 World Series Champs if he pitched in the World Series!! Bip roberts a now show too!!!
I always wished the Red Sox traded for Mussina, there was no one like him.
I was at this game. We didn't know how the game really ended until we were listening to the post-game on the way home.
CLEVELAND INDIANS 1997 AL CHAMPIONS
3:41:21. Wow.
Why, in the bottom of the 12th, did the announcers keep saying that the runner on 1st didn't matter? A double play there is a pretty big deal.
absolutely. you are right.
absolutely. you are right.
anyone looking for mussina's weird stretch it's at 1:09:48
Foul ball to end the game..😢
Quite a few great/HOF guys here in this game/series - Alomar, Thome, Baines, Ripken, Mussina, and Vizquel, Lofton, Hershiser, and yes even the other popular stars with steroid allegations with likes of Palmiero and Ramirez.
2:23:19 🤣🤣🤣😂🤣
I think he meant the Orioles by "we"
4:00:38, dart alert
A young Joe Buck? Who knew?
lol Alomar 17:05
Manny hof Jim Thome Hof Matt Williams WS Champ Hr title Brian Giles went on to pirates became a all star David Justice solid power hitter Visquel best defensive SS of all time Cleveland was loaded an they had a killer pitching staff
we won this series... lost to florida after it.
Its striking to me how much smaller the '97 versions of some ballplayers look as compared to all the 'roided up later versions of themselves. Specifically Palmiero and Ramirez.
definitely HOF
Omg the whistling in the bottom of the 11th is sooooo annoying!!!!
CLEVELAND WINS 2-1 1997 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPS
CLEVELAND CAVS going 4 five straight against the hornets 2-0 vs charlotte 2014-15 season
Who cares? This isn't about the Cavs, it's the Indians!
its about cleveland, indians r going to win 88- 90 games an cavs going to the finals
***** CAVS EASTERN CONFERECE Champions and they made it to the finals with Kyrie, Love and Vareajo injured! Lebron is a basketball genius and the best player in the world. Its all good because cavs r going back to the finals and winning next year with a healthy team. Warriors beat a depleted Cavs team!
Oh Yeah and Ohio State 2014-15 National Champions!
***** whatever Cleveland in the house and we got Lebron and kyrie will be healthy so u know nothing! Like I said Ohio State National Champions!
WTB Kenny Lofton anyone? How did Grissom miss that? LOL 2:23:32
Yeah my thoughts exactly. McCarver has always been stupid though. Not really surprising.
THIS HAS TO END!!! TRIBE HASNT WON THE SERIES SINCE 1948!!!! C'MON!!!! unreal.
Definitely not better than Schilling ... not even close
Go cleveland!!
FOUL BALL!!!
Fair
