  • First, the good news: it’s sometime in 1972 and your band have been signed to Island Records giving you access to the legendary Basing Street Studios where you start to record your debut. Now, the bad news: a year later, Island drop you and the half album you made goes unreleased, unloved, and left to gather dust.
That’s what happened to Twenty-Five Views Of Worthing. But several decades on and the Island session, along with several other later recordings, have been lovingly gathered to finally see the light of day on a lavish, limited edition, gatefold LP. As detailed in the accompanying expansive booklet, The Worthings, as they were known, paid their dues supporting Amon Düül II, Roxy Music, and others via their connection to Island Records’ live agency. Largely instrumental, with keyboards and sax to the fore, not to mention a brief appearance of a choir, Caravan and Soft Machine provide obvious points of inspiration. Sometimes wistful and boasting oodles of period charm, if parts show their age now and then, the energy and enthusiasm that originally fuelled the London-based quartet, has been deftly rekindled for a brand new 21st century audience.

Seelie Court do release quite a lot of dubious amateurish semi-crap, so regularly marketed as "lost masterpieces" that I can't be bothered to take their descriptions seriously anymore. But this one was actually brilliant.

Happy you like Twenty-Five Views Of Worthing. The decades spent collecting CDs taught me to never pay attention to the promotional brainwashing of record labels. On the other hand, even a Seelie has a couple of similar quality releases, where the sound is good and the music is excellent.

@@PsychedelicSapiens I haven't been able to pin down that couple of releases, apparently, and I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Which ones are your favourites?

@@outernothingness1177 The ones that carry both the musical and sound quality are for me Rudi Tchaikovsky - The Castle's Equivalent, The Steve Brown Band - Soul Full Of Sin, Rainbird - Maiden Flight and As You Like It - Ages Come And Ages Go. I also really like Motiffe's album, but the sound quality is poor on that one.
