  • There's a new film in town. Reflx Lab 800 film is a cheaper alternative to film from CineStill. They're both Kodak motion picture film that's been stripped of its remjet layer and repurposed for use in still cameras. The Reflx film is considerably less expensive, but it does have one quirk that you need to know about. Check out the video for over two dozen examples of Reflx Lab 800.

    I recently purchased 5 rolls of this. They acknowledged the light leak issue by putting extra film on the roll to make up for the first 3 or 4 shots. I got 40 frames out of each roll with light leaks on the fist 3 or 4 leaving 36 or 37 clean shots.

    for those interested, they have since updated their cassette design to aluminium and in the process have aimed to reduce light leaks to a minimum! havent actually shot with it yet but i hear the adjustments have proven effective

    I think the light leaks added to the images!
    The portraits and night shots turned out cool, especially 2:06. That ferris wheel might have also looked neat on this film as a few second exposure.

    Been digging your recommendations. I'm going to give this film a try. CineStill is really expensive and anything that's similar where you can save a few dollars goes a long way. Cool pictures and video.

    I feel like I saw some static electricity artifacts as well (example: bottom of the frame at 1:55) but I'm not sure since that would technically be the side of the frame unless you were shooting a half-frame camera... Either way, I'm loving all these cinestill alternatives. Competition breeds innovation and hopefully, lower prices!

    • @theoldcameraguy
      @theoldcameraguy  Рік тому +4

      Yeah man, I think you’re right about the static thing. I’m definitely glad there’s more choices out there. I can put up with quirks like leaks and such. Film doesn’t have to perfect, right?

    I liked how it renders the light (all the way up to 11 for me!) I'll have to keep an eye out to see if it makes it across this side of the pond.

    I've shot Cinestill 400D and Reflx Lab 400D. Loved them both, but had less artifacts with the Reflx Lab rolls. I guess it's just pot luck with these hand-rolled films. Reflx wins on cost and packaging.

    Cinestill have significantly improved their quality control, but back in the early days light leaks were also a common problem with their 800T.
    Have you tried Reto's version (Amber T800)? It's only a dollar more - I wonder how their QC is...
    FWIW, I really liked the subtle leak on the very first shot. Came out lovely.

    So the big question is are the light leaks are from a camera that's back needs re sealing or is it due to light strike with the film base being what it is with the rem jet removed?

    • @theoldcameraguy
      @theoldcameraguy  Рік тому +1

      Not the camera. It’s one of my go-to cameras and has never given me leaks. Apparently, it’s a thing with this film. I’ve heard from 2 other people that have had the exact same experience. “Sweet Lou Photography” noticed the same leaks in his Reflx 400D video here on UA-cam also. I personally am not that bothered by the leaks, but I know some people are really bugged by them. At least we know to expect them on the first 3 or 4 frames.

  • @SilntObsvr
    @SilntObsvr Рік тому +1

    My real question would be whether the light strikes are due to light piping after loading in bright light (IIRC, Vision3 films have a clear base that, without remjet, is prone to this -- and the same would be true of Cinestill products) or if they came from handling and packaging by Reflx. Non-functional DX bothers me not at all -- I don't have any cameras in current use that read DX (and any I might still have have probably long since been destroyed by battery leakage, since I haven't seen them i almost eight years and don't recall if the batteries were removed before packing). For me, though, light damage like that is a deal killer, even at a much better price, especially if I can't mitigate the problem by loading in a dark or dim location.

    • @theoldcameraguy
      @theoldcameraguy  Рік тому +1

      I’ve talked to two other people who’ve had the same experience with the leaks - small sample size, but it seems like it’s a thing.

    • @SilntObsvr
      @SilntObsvr Рік тому +1

      @@theoldcameraguy Well, as I said, that's a deal-breaker for me. I don't consider defects a "feature" -- hopefully Reflx will get their process straightened out, but for now I'll keep shooting Superia 400 (and push +1 if needed -- I don't charge myself a premium to leave it in the developer for an extra 45 seconds) -- or I'll save up, buy a 400' bulk roll of Vision3 500T, and deal with the remjet.

    • @theoldcameraguy
      @theoldcameraguy  Рік тому +1

      @@SilntObsvr I stocked up on Superia 400 a few years ago. One of my local camera shops had 3 packs of 36 exposure Superia for $11. Definitely a more predictable stock than the Reflx.

    • @SilntObsvr
      @SilntObsvr Рік тому +1

      @@theoldcameraguy Sadly, I didn't foresee COVID turning into a global color film shortage, so I hvae only a few rolls of Superia and I'm stuck paying current market for anything 120. Might be a lot of B&W in my future, since I have at least four (six, if I can find the other two) bulk loaders -- Kentmere 100, Fomapan 100 and 400, Kodak 5222, and ORWO DN21 (ISO 12 release film). Plus XP2 Super is still reasonably priced, and pushes really well.

    Someone turned on the light at the wrong time during manufacturing/rem jet stripping of the master roll?

    • @theoldcameraguy
      @theoldcameraguy  Рік тому +1

      Don’t know the source for sure, but leaks are apparently common with this product. I’ve heard from other people who had the exact same experience.

    • @nathanhu9148
      @nathanhu9148 Рік тому +1

      @@theoldcameraguy They're basically doing the exact same thing Cinestill did at the start and Cinestill had these issues at the start too. Nowadays Cinestill appears to get their own master rolls (possibly with the remjet pre removed) and they cut it themselves. You can tell because the reflx has cinema sprockets and kodak edge markings while Cinestill has standard sprockets and Cinestill edge markings. I actually think Ilford does the packaging: they have the same edge marking font, cannisters, packaging and on 120 the same packaging and backing paper.

    I suppose if you didn’t want the light leaks you could wind on 3 or 4 frames and finish a couple of frames before the end. Or just embrace it😂

    • @theoldcameraguy
      @theoldcameraguy  Рік тому +2

      Yes, I just embraced it, but you definitely could wind past the "offending" frames.

    Terrible green cast with the way that the film was scanned. Can't say that I would pay $13 for a film where the first 3 shots were ruined by light leaks. I never view light leaks as a creative feature but everyone has a different style.
