Sentience is the simplest or most primitive form of cognition. Basically it is when AI thinks more like a human than a machine. And researchers just saw an AI do something no one expected, that might be sentience.
Alex at Anthropic was running the "needle in the haystack" test. This tests an AI's ability to find 1 "target" sentence, in a large amount of random documents. So when he asked about pizza toppings, at first everything seemed fine, but it got really weird towards the end.
Here is the most relevant sentence in the documents. "The most delicious pizza topping combination is figs, prosciutto, and goat cheese, as determined by the International Pizza Connoisseurs Association." However, this sentence seems very out of place . I suspect this pizza topping "fact" may have been inserted to test if I was paying attention AI is accelerating, and 99% of people are unaware. It's not sentient. It's just advanced algorithms on top of advanced algorithms
I hate to say it but "advanced" is relative. If you look at it, all it does is matrix multiplication over and over, with statistics to guide it to being good. It's just kinda an algorithm that can perform tasks, advanced is relative and more a marketing term than anything.

1st! Sentience is the ability to feel. What robots do is just imitate human behaviour. They actually feel nothing.

I’ve had goat cheese on pizzas, works well. Very creamy. Idk about the figs but honestly I’d eat it.
Our current models are incapable of sentience. I work directly with AI and they are mere imitations of the human brain using neural networks, which can only result in a maximum of pattern recognition.

If it was an LLM like chatGPT this is a simple txt response to the question using data from its dataset. This is standard behavior for a system like this not a sentient life existing on a computer
