We’re hanging out in the snow at Park City for the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival this week and got a chance to see 2014 festival alum The Babadook on the big screen and wouldn’t you know it, it happens to be on the CineFix Top 100! A terrifying entry into the psychological horror genre, writer director Jennifer Kent gives us the story of a woman and her son, struggling to keep their sanity in the midst of grief, trauma and a haunted pop up book! Clint, Cal and Alex dig into the brilliantly efficient opening 2 minutes, a borrowed sound effect from World of Warcraft and The Babadook is a deserving spiritual successor to Stephen King, Stanley Kubrick and The Shining.

I did a long time ago. The only thing I can recall about it was the tense atmosphere honestly.
I have not seen this movie, but even just listening to the 3 of you describing the opening scenes without any images made me anxious.

I watched this movie years ago and was blown away. Just thinking about it, now having had kids, it gives me chills just thinking about it.
My favorite gay movie.
I don’t think so - I think the movie is about grief, trauma, parenting, stress, etc. For me, it was a reflection on depression, but I can also see that it’s about the challenges of being a parent. It’s kind of a horror version of Aftersun.

'That sound' - crows make that sound in Australia. They caw and they also do a clicking type of sound that you described. Seeing Predator in the 90s and then walking past gum trees and hearing that supnd as a kid was a little creepy.

Any math nerds out there able to crack the formula yet?
As far as I can figure so far, it's point based: If it shows up as someone's number one it gets a hundred points and if it shows up as someone's number one hundred it gets one point. And then it gets a few more for each additional list, I suspect ten more points per list.
The Babadook being on Alex's list at number nine gives it 92 plus for being Clint's forty-eight it gets 63 plus 10 more for being on two lists. That adds up to 155. The next highest we have right now is The Exorcist (forty-two on the top one hundred list) at 133 and the next one up is Seven Samurai (twenty-eighth) with 173

nope...not watching this movie. I don't care how wonderful it is, I don't need nightmare fuel.
The sad thing about Babadook, after all the hype and sitting thru the movie, you end up saying to yourself ‘why didn’t they just ask for help, get a motel room, get others involved’
That's 100% of haunting movies and 95% of horror movies in general.
I think that's kind of the point and that's even discussed in this episode. They have no one to go to, and no means whatsoever. Not to mention the fact that the it's Amelia who's haunted, not the house.
